a few red sox fans have suggested in this thread that he was lucky last year, but you might think differently if you had watched him pitch on a start-to-start basis. when he's on his game, nobody makes solid contact against him. he'll give up a lot of bloop singles, but very few extra base hits... and he induces a lot of double plays.

i really don't believe that the yankees' run support or closer had much of an impact on his 3.63 ERA (which is a very impressive number for an AL east pitcher). you could make that argument for his win total, but didn't beckett also have a great closer last year? papelbon?

and judging by the fact that he managed to win 16 games despite a 5.01 ERA, i would assume that beckett had more than his fair share of run support as well.

and the only reason beckett isn't a yankee right now because they refused to give up wang for him. a good decision, i think.

you can argue against wang as a true number one if you want. but in an era where good pitching is hard to find, i'll gladly take a guy like that (19-6, 3.63 ERA, cy young runner up) as my number one.

Alright look at these 2 pitchers from 2006 and tell me who was better?

    Wang 19 wins 6 loses 18 quality starts 52 walks 76 K's 1.31 whip 3.63 ERA
    Escobar 11 wins 14 loses 20 quality starts 50 walks 147 K's 1.28 whip 3.61 ERA

I didn't see Kelvim Escobar get many Cy Young votes. He got zero.
The Angels also have a pretty good closer.

I ask you again was Wang that good or was he lucky?

When is the first full spring training game? I read that Pavano will see his first action Sunday against Philly. Between him and Igawa, no one knows what to expect this season. I still think Hughes will be up by the All Star Break.

the first game is thursday at 1:15 pm against minnesota.

i don't recall saying in any of my previous posts that escobar wasn't a good pitcher.

the statistics you're showing me here are nearly identical except for win totals. so if anything, i would say that escobar was unlucky. but i didn't watch him pitch more than two or three times all season, so it's hard to say for sure. maybe he just didn't come up big when they needed him to. wang did. that's a big reason why the yankees made the postseason and the angels didn't.

and yes, the angels do have a very good closer... as well as solid middle relief and a strong offense. if i recall correctly, these factors were a large part of your original "wang was lucky" argument.

so i'll answer again: wang was a very good pitcher in '06.

a lot of them will be on YES i think. not all.

most of the games are 1 pm starts though, so hopefull they'll show encores too.

Game is on YES right now .

    Wangs first inning - 1-2-3-&-out ,

Johnny Damon leads off Spring Training, on the very first pitch , with a blast of a homer . Yanks up 1-0 bottom 1st .

yeah , i know, its only spring training, but its still nice to see the boys in pinstripes back on the field .

Yankees are sporting the traditional armband in memorium for Cory Lidle .

ballparks emptying out , yanks ahead 5-1 .

prett slow moving , pre season opener.

its wild that the pitchers only go for 2 innings, then they are done.

it was cool to get a look at the baby rocket too, alltho he looked avearage to me, the kid is only 20 years old and from what they said, extremely mature for 20 .

I will also make note that when they said this kid was like a young roger clemens, they werent kidding. Even his delivery , pitching stance, hell even the way he holds the glove, could be a body - double for The Rocket.

    Gonna be a nice summer.

Hughes was a little wild today. I'm sure he'll be better next time out.

Ohlendorf looked good though, not a bad pickup for an old giant with back problems.

yeah, hughes wasn't too good. he wasn't locating his fastball and his velocity was down at around 91 mph. also, he couldn't get his curveball over to save his life. definitely not the same pitcher i saw at AA trenton last year. it's early-spring rust, that's all. he'll get better...

ohlendorf was impressive. that was a good pickup. he's got that heavy sinker like wang.

both of them could benefit from a few months at AAA, in my opinion.

    Jeter Cards

    fuck it.

i broke down and bought me one of these red versions.

dont even ask how much i paid for it !

i found out that when the full 07 season package comes out from Topps, these will not be included ( they'll reissue #40 )- so this limited run will be the only versions out there.

Definitely a cool card to have, but....

I think the value of novelty cards like this go down significantly once all the hype is over. Remember the Billy Ripken "Fuck Off" card? Not worth anything anymore.

haha, I just recently saw that card being displayed on Conan O'Brien when he had Keith Olbermann (sp?) on and Mr. Olbermann showed that card, as well as 3 more. I know I had that card when I was a kid and collected them, but did not notice the "Fuck Off" written on the bottom of his bat.

Yeah, maybe Moose can straighten him out through tough love. Knock some sense into him. Just don't knock him too hard. He might hurt something.

    lol

You know if Pavano could come around and be decent that would really help the staff. I would not mind if Hughes spent most of this year in the minors maybe coming up for a spot start or two late in the year.
