You give the people what Bernie is offering and it moves leftward again. The country doesn't know what it wants other than to feel taken care of and supported.

In this country? Taken care of? Since 2016 the country has undoubtedly moved in the direction opposite of Bernie’s, outside of liberal enclaves. Can’t wait to see what our boy Mamdani does for NY.
because you keep mentioning him, I read up on some of his policies yesterday. I was a little taken aback by, mainly, the government owned grocery stores. At first I was like "no thanks" but the more I read up on it, it sounds like a pretty decent idea.

it’s a great solution to solve food desert issues in certain areas of the city (Generally, lower income areas). It allows fresh food options so people don’t have to resort to junk food all the time which, as we all know, adversely affects our health. creating jobs in these areas too is a really great side effect as well.

yes, these are the upsides I read, I was wondering what any potential downsides there might be.

Not saying can't/won't work but one example where millions spent in funding and couldn't stay open.  I can't see how it possible works today in NYC.  https://nypost.com/2025/08/12/us-news/city-owned-missouri-market-akin-to-zohran-mamdanis-nyc-grocery-store-proposal-shuts-its-doors/

We had a poster here that said that organic and out of season vegetables should only be for the rich.  The cost and carbon footprint was huge of these.

Bloomberg tried to ban soda in NYC and that fell flat.

Would more people actually buy veggies if given the chance?  A salad doesn't satisfy nor fill u up like carbs do.  That is one tough obstacle to overcome.

I mean there will be lots of options so people don’t have to solely rely on bodegas and fast food. It’s not just for the fresh greens.

Relying on fast food is no longer an excuse. Shit costs way more than buying meat, veggies and fruits. Time to admit people just enjoying eating like shit.

Yeah, but if you have travel 30-40 min to get to a grocery store on public transportation and only be able to carry a couple of bags (so maybe a day or twos worth of food?. Hitting the corner McDonald’s is easier.

I mean, these aren’t being proposed to open because the government sees it as a lucrative investment opportunity.

True. Being born and raised in Brooklyn Ny I didn’t even consider traveling to a grocery store. I will say that most grocery chains plus Amazon deliver groceries to your door. Not sure how widely available services like that are through the US.
  • Most people probably associate and assume that food deserts are inner city issues and mostly affect the other. I don’t know the demographics of this town in Kansas but imagine having to travel 25 miles to buy groceries, particularly without a car. From wiki, wiki, wiki:

Burlingame, Kansas (pictured) is an example of a food desert. All three preexisting grocery stores in Burlingame closed, and the closest grocery store is over 40 km (25 mi) away in Topeka, Kansas.[1]

Yeah, this isn’t a fix all solution, but more options are better.

To HFDs point, I keep mentioning him, because of his primary victory, he was mentioned often on the forum. He garnered a lot of attention in media, many Dems see him as the new left vision, and could be a key figure to both the far left and right. And context is everything. That’s why politics can be so much more difficult that what we see on the surface.

To Ind’s point, it’s much more than the grocery stores, it’s free child care, busing and an enormous housing program. A huge socialist movement in the capitalist capitol of the world lol. Yes manhattan is a liberal enclave but the rest of the state is not. These extreme policies can backfire against Dems in a big way. Even nationally.

NYS has made significant voting trends to the right over the last few years, and we pay an enormous amount of taxes. His programs will dramatically increase taxes. It’s very easy for large corporations to move a few miles out of the state and still be close, thus further reducing the city’s tax base. A lot of city mass transit funding comes from the suburbs, where many of us never use it. We don’t need to be handing the Rs easy wins and more voters.

theres nothing wrong with coming up with programs that will provide assistance, but to the core, these extremely expensive programs don’t sell in NYS as a whole, and can really hurt Dems statewide, because a lot of what he is trying to do REQUIRES STATE APPROVAL.

Almost everyone here forgot the The US House turned completely based on the NYC suburbs just three years ago. A lot of media attention is in Texas, but we are all forgetting recent significant history how this impacts national politics.

    that would be brutal.

i have some friends that have moved about 30 minutes west of here out in the middle of nowhere. just farmland everywhere. i asked them where the nearest gas station is and it's like 8 minutes from them. the nearest grocery store is about the same distance south of them. someone would have to kill me. that is just too inconvenient. but they like the quiet and the isolation. not for me though.
