I don't mind paying taxes... because I happen to like the Interstate Highway system. And I like having an Army and Air Force and I know that C-17 Transports and B-2 Bombers cost a lot of money. I like having one agency that regulates air traffic because I have a feeling that Louisiana and Mississippi would probably have a pretty shitty system in place.
I just WISH... there wasn't all of the bullshit spending.
...
Taxes are not the problem... SPENDING is. Blaming Taxes is like you blaming your paycheck for not covering your expenses. Cut your expenses and the problem goes away.
And the only difference the 2 political parties have regarding taxes... Democrats are Tax and Spend, while Republicans are Don't Tax and Spend.
i mind paying taxes. i live in the largest county in the us yet i don't have roads; police protection; emergency medical services; fire protection; electrical access or telephone access. the purpose of taxation was to provide this to all residents. the government has essencially breached their contract with me by not providing these services in exchange for my tax dollars.
air traffic control is paid for through taxes within that industry. i like having one agency that handles that too so i agree with you.
my point is that basic income tax was to provide equal access to police; fire; emt; etc. to all people. we all pay in equally; and we all benefit equally.
i do not receive any of those benefits thus i object to income taxes.
tax rates in the us are much lower. somewhere around 15%. if you know how to work the system with deductions; you can pay as little as 0%. your taxes are high to pay for socialized healthcare. thus the reason so many "superstars" claim residency in the us. i believe france has the highest tax rate.
america was formed out of a tax revolt. until the 1930's; america had no income tax. the government wasn't in our business and we lived happy and free. now people want government in all aspects of our personal life and government has grown into a monster we can no longer control.
I know my taxes pay for medicare. They also pay for a lot of things that are the result of my country being geographically massive and a lot of it being really cold. Oh yea and on top of the taxes I mentioned, beer is typically twice the price due to taxes. Plus Canada has only had income tax since around WWI.
As far as the government being an out of control monster because of your taxes is it really that bad? I mean 15% or less income tax and negligible sales taxes are hardly anything. I mean if I only had to pay 15% I would be living a life of luxury, then again, I would be paying way more in health insurance, plus I would probably be paying still paying off student loans since my post secondary education would have cost me way more, so I guess it all evens out.
Also if I go to a Casino in Canada and hit the jackpot on something I don't have to pay a dime in taxes, so that's nice.

The debt service in Canada is quite manageable ATM. The government has mandated balanced books and has achieved them for about 10 years. This is huge because it is still unclear how future Americans will be able to afford to pay interest on the outstanding national debt AND pay outstanding entitlements to retirees...
The amount of a Canadian tax dollar used for program spending? 75 cents (25 cents pays interest on the national debt)
The amount of an American tax dollar used for program spending? 0 cents (the full dollar pays interest on national debt)

the government isn't a mosnter because of taxes. the us has the most reasonable taxes of any nation. it's a monster because of the people wanting handouts. to get right to the point; what business does the government have in our bedrooms? oral sex was illegal until recently. wtf? if i smoke a joint in my home i am a felon and disqualified from many government services. including social security services. i'm about to start ranting so i'll stop here. hope you get the point.

France is about 45-55% depending on your income level.

i believe you're right. and i also believe CNN when it says france has the best healthcare in the world because of those taxes. but where's the incentive to earn? without the incentive to earn; you lose the incentive to learn. my incentive to earn caused me to create a process that makes aircraft hydrolic parts cheaper and safer. my incentive to earn helped create the first contact lenses. if i had to give half of everything i earned to the government; it would be much easier to ride the wave and get the free services. i lost my childhood because of my incentive to earn. i traded it for the ability to retire at age 40 so i'm not crying over it. france may be cool with being a "middle of the road" country. it doesn't really contribute to the world and has proven it cannot protect itself against attack. if say iran makes a power play for europe; france will once again be calling upon the us for protection.
great point cincy. if she won the lottery this weekend her views would change instantly. i've helped my friends to the point of paying off mortgages but i got to choose who i helped. if she had the money and was told she couldn't help her friends but instead had to give her money to X, Y, and Z; she'd be throwing a fit.

The French just have a different attitude toward life, like working yourself to death and making money isn't really what life is all about, or having a intimidating military. Life's too short. It's the "Joie de Vivre" that's important and I'll have to say, every time I'm in France it's very appealing and I love every minute of it.

i agree with you and that's why i traded my childhood for my freedom from working at age 40. france is like going to a party country. always a good time. that's cool but one should also be able to protect ones self. i think in this day and age; one should be able to help protect others. i feel a responsability to protect others and if i see a crime being a committed i'm prepared to protect the victim. i feel i owe it to society.

hope you enjoyed it, time to give back.
