Yes - I really think it shows how far we still have to go if people feel the need to mention it.

When I watch sports, announcers often say stuff like 'Player X is the oldest player in the league' or 'with his 6 foot 9 Player J is the tallest player in the history of the game' or 'this is the first time an Russian team won the world cup'. I don't see how this is any different.

Why does this have to be the first thing brought up after indy won...even tony dungy was caught off guard by this. its the year 2007, this really isnt a big deal.

This isnt a milestone like jackie robinson in baseball or anything...people will do anything to get race into the news.
Agreed. It's only a big deal because they make it one. The fact that this has been bought up in such a fashion shows that people in America are still trying to prove themselves non-racist, which most would have got over by now. Something like this would be fitting in the fifties, but not now.

I understand where miller is coming from...I just think he jumped the gun on this one.

It should be mentioned, it is an interesting fact. Now, as it gets asked again and again over the next 2 weeks. AS it is brough tup again and again. As each journalist runs their own story on this aspect alone....then it has gone way too far.

I think it was Pam Oliver (the black female sideline reporter) that said something like progress will be made when this isn't a news topic. And that is true.

I venture to guess that at least 60% of the people in this country don't really know the definition of racism and discrimination.

From my personal experience through interaction with white people and black people, through out my life, it's clear most people don't really don't have a clue.

I've sat there and watched both white people and black people spout off about racism when there's a news story of a criminal or murderer, who has commited the crime and escaped. As soon as they give the description of the criminal at large and they include " He's a Black Male ........." ; these geniuses start spouting off about how that's racism and someone even claimed that was profiling.

When in fact, it is an accurate description of the criminal. A necessary element in the description. Just as it would be a necessary element if the criminal was white.....hispanic...whatever.

Pam was right on the money with that. This is not news. This is the way it should have been, a long, long time ago.

I didn't read all of this thread but would like to write (acording to thread's title)..that races do not exist...

There are skin types, eyelid shapes..etc...and they are a consiquence of the climate.
If you look at human DNK and all of the genes we are more that 99% the same in our "structure". And even differences..varieties...there are more inside one population that in between populations! So if there is a major catastrophy and only lets say Italians survive..more than 98% of ALL human variation would be preserved. I read this stuff in Spencer's work..

So races are really made up to feed ideologies and justify some acts...we should stop using the term race....

I believe it's news worthy, in the sporting world, simply because it is a first. Blacks have not been given the opportunity, in the history of the NFL, to coach teams. The first black coach was in 1921, Fitz Pollard. It wasn't until the Raiders hired Art Shell in 1989 that a black person was in that position again. Since then we have had only a few black head coaches, Herm Edwards, Lovie Smith, Tony Dungy, Art Shell (2nd time hired), Dennis Green, Romeo Crennel, and Marvin Lewis. 8 black head coaches in the leagues 80+ year history is a sad number.

    Sad number????

They said last night that there are more black coaches in the NFL than the college ranks. How many more teams are there in college?

I agree with this. Bottom line, it is a first, so it will be mentioned and it is news worthy. I'm excited for both coaches and their teams. I really like Tony Dungy, he's a class act.........Go Colts!!!!!!! BTW, I love football!!!

Precisely. It's worthy of merit as a first. Once we get past this moment, it's simply because they are great coaches. These two guys are two of the best coaches in the NFL and it's about time TD got some recognition of that. How many teams have copied the "Tampa 2" since he left? Lovie Smith has been running a clinic for 3 years ever since the Falcons screwed up and hired Jim Mora Jr over Smith. He has had a plan and it's been expertly executed. Amazing how a team can win 14 games and be so underappreciated nationally.

  • I am not an American football, I don't even like the sport, but it is important to mention that the coaches are black.

IF you are black you would understand, if you are white you wouldn't. Check the news and see how the portray the black. Then you'll understand.

Not to stray off the threads target but the reason the Bears are underappreciated is simply because their is no flash to their offense, which is wrong because they do deserve respect for being one of the two best teams in the league. They don't have a superstar QB who can light up your defense. Trust me if the Bears had even a QB of say Chad Pennington's caliber they would be getting a lot more respect.

Their defense did well last week but is still anywhere near how good it was in the beginning of the season.

Their D cant touch the Ravens defense.

Also they play shit teams...hence why they did so well.

Well they will have a tough go at the Colt Offense considering that they will be missing their two best defensive linemen. I really don't care who wins I just want an exciting game and not some one-sided blow out that's over before my beer is even warm.

I know this... I was being nice. They are easily the most boring team in the playoffs this season. Grossman is the worst QB ever to have a team in the superbowl that says to me even more about the supporting cast and the coach. Lovie stuck with him because Griese couldn't give him any more of an upside. The media always puts way too much credit into the QB because it's the sexiest position. The bears made it to the playoffs with even worse last year. Grossman at least throws a nice deep ball. I've disliked him since he was at Florida. Their OL is outstanding and Thomas Jones still dosen't get enough credit, not to mention Bernard Berrian. Grossman is horrible but adequate enough for the rest of that team to win.

Did you see how close Urlacher was to Bush.....that's just unreal. Urlacher is so good it's almost unfair.

I'm a Jets fan and you're giving Pennington way too much credit.

Grossman is a better Quarterback than Chad.

On Chad's worse day he is still better than Grossman. Pennington may not have Grossman's arm strength, but he makes up for it in accuracy. The problem with Chad is not Chad it's the Jet's running game and their lack of a big possession receiver. I am on my knees everyday praying that they draft Jeff Samardzija. He is the type of receiver they need.

Pennington's problem is that he has way too many mental-farts during big games. I agree with the weaknesses you have decribed, but Chad has a pattern and history of coughing the ball up and throwing mindless, irresponsible and downright stupid interceptions. That's a problem between his ears, not with the team itself. He's a smart guy and he should be better than that.

I think it's time for the Jets to find themselves a better starter at the QB spot and designate Chad to backup. I no longer feel comfortable or confident with him as QB in the Playoffs or in a big pressure spot. And that's his track record speaking to me.

I do agree with you on this. The Jets have to start looking to the future. I think Chad is a good QB, but he is not the one to lead us to the promised land. You have a couple of really good QBs in the draft this year. I think it's time to pull the trigger on a trade and get a good spot to draft one of then. Have them sit for a year or two to really let the system sink in. In that time you can sure up the backfield, improve on the defense, and then make a run for it.

Do you find it equally strange that white's and latino's are so under represented in basketball and football? Now if all people are equal there must be a lot of discrimination going on keeping white's and latino's out of the NBA.

Or, is it just possible that just as there are some physical differences between the races that there may also be some mental differences. Not making one race better then the other, just different. And that some of these differences may make one race better suited for coaching.

Why are we so quick to accept physical differences between races, but then automatically rule out mental differneces?

Careful, someone will incorrectly interpret your comments and question as being racist...lol.

    Of course, you are correct.

There are both physical and mental/intellectual differences between all races.

Of course some black people will celebrate their physical differences, if a particular physical difference indicates some superiority in any given physical aspect. But cry racism if it is suggested white people may have some intellectual advantage in any particular intellectual aspect.

Then you have some white people who will beat their chests and celebrate what they perceive as some intellectual superiority over black people, then, scream rascism if it is suggested some black people have a physical superiority in a particular aspect, over whites.

It's sad and funny, at the same time. Especially since when you think about it, this behavior actually shows how much we are similar, than different.
