This race crap is absurd

It is noteworthy because it is a first. Is it newsworthy... that is, is it a story outside the sports page? Probably not, but within the confines of sports... you cannot dispute it is the first time in the NFL's 88 year history.
And remember... it wasn't until 1988... 69 years after it's creation... that a black quarterback lead a Championship team.
...
To address Miller's question about a white running back leading his team to the Championship... so what? John Riggins did it... as did Jim Taylor, Paul Hourning, Larry Csonka, Tom Matte, Alan Ameche, Frank Gifford and Red Grange. It wouldn't be a first so it wouldn't be noteworthy or newsworthy... unless he rushed for 3,000 yards or something.Allen Fieldhouse, home of the 2008 NCAA men's Basketball Champions! Go Jayhawks!

Football rocks.
I miss the pick-up games as a kid,
on the playground,
they happen still
I miss the fake stardom in high school
and my easy cheerleader girlfriend
who stole my virginity.
Football is America,
I'll never forget the 46-yard run I made
for a touchdown with no time on the clock.

I'm not black, but when I hear stuff like that, it makes me happy for some reason. I guess it's because I carry with me this nagging sense of guilt over what happened to them for so many years.
It wasn't too long ago that those guys were in shackles and picking cotton for brutal white plantation owners. And it wasn't too long ago that they had to drink at different water fountains. And it wasn't too long ago that Mtv intentionally did not play videos by black artists. According to some documentary I saw, Michael Jackson changed all that.
And now they're coaching major football games. How can that not be something to applaud? I'm just one of those people who likes to root for the underdog I guess.0 -

While it is worth mentioning, it sounded very out of place and unnecessary when the announcer blurted it out after the colts just won. There is so much time between now and the superbowl for those background and "feel good" stories, I would much rather if it been the focus of one of those. My whole life

It's stupid to mention it. It just perpetuates the stereotypes. If people would ignore it, there's a better chance it would become commonplace and the norm....The only people we should try to get even with...

People often talk about these trivialities, I don't see anything wrong with it. Of course I didn't hear how they said it. But it would seem perfectly logical to mention it, in my opinion. They don't have to celebrate it, but do you really think mentioning this perpetuates the stereotypes?THANK YOU, LOSTDAWG!

Who the fuck cares?
Why does this have to be the first thing brought up after indy won...even tony dungy was caught off guard by this. its the year 2007, this really isnt a big deal.
This isnt a milestone like jackie robinson in baseball or anything...people will do anything to get race into the news.
Upon visiting my mom last evening I commented that only in the US would this be a noted thing. Then we watched a Cdn sports talk show and three of the four on the panel agreed. Just add it to the list.
I bet you could name the first black quarterback to win the Super Bowl. The first black head coach in the NFL. You know the drill. You've changed your place in this world!0 -

Are you comparing the White experience in America, in general, and professional sports specifically, with that of Blacks? Are you saying that in the history of the game there has never been an accomplished White running Back? That guy on the heisman trophy looks pretty fuckin' white to me.
Besides, the point is once upon a time Blacks were not allowed to compete in professional sports. After awhile it was o.k. as long as they scored lots of touchdowns, stole lots of bases or ripped down a couple of basketball rims, but, coaching? "No fuckin way. Coons are too fuckin stupid for that". Now two Black head coaches are leading their teams into one of the biggest events in all of sport. I say shout it from the hilltop!
You might be the biggest retard on this board. I love how you spew garbage calling me a racist because i dont think the fact that a black coach going to the superbowl should be the first thing out of an announcers mouth.
Im not comparing the experience of whites to blacks in sports; you obviously are not intelligent enough to understand my post.
My post regarding white running backs, is that they dont exist anymore...so if a white running back was able to bring his team to the super bowl should it be the first thing the media draws upon? IMO no.America...the greatest Country in the world.0 -

Yes - I really think it shows how far we still have to go if people feel the need to mention it.The only people we should try to get even with...

When I watch sports, announcers often say stuff like 'Player X is the oldest player in the league' or 'with his 6 foot 9 Player J is the tallest player in the history of the game' or 'this is the first time an Russian team won the world cup'. I don't see how this is any different.THANK YOU, LOSTDAWG!

I read the above post and think "who the fuck cares if first thing brought up is the fact that for the first time in history we now have 2 black coaches going to the superbowl" and I wonder why it would bother someone that it was mentioned...0 -

I understand where miller is coming from...I just think he jumped the gun on this one.
It should be mentioned, it is an interesting fact. Now, as it gets asked again and again over the next 2 weeks. AS it is brough tup again and again. As each journalist runs their own story on this aspect alone....then it has gone way too far.
I think it was Pam Oliver (the black female sideline reporter) that said something like progress will be made when this isn't a news topic. And that is true.hippiemom = goodness0 -
I venture to guess that at least 60% of the people in this country don't really know the definition of racism and discrimination.
From my personal experience through interaction with white people and black people, through out my life, it's clear most people don't really don't have a clue.
I've sat there and watched both white people and black people spout off about racism when there's a news story of a criminal or murderer, who has commited the crime and escaped. As soon as they give the description of the criminal at large and they include " He's a Black Male ........." ; these geniuses start spouting off about how that's racism and someone even claimed that was profiling.
When in fact, it is an accurate description of the criminal. A necessary element in the description. Just as it would be a necessary element if the criminal was white.....hispanic...whatever.0 -

Pam was right on the money with that. This is not news. This is the way it should have been, a long, long time ago.0 -
I didn't read all of this thread but would like to write (acording to thread's title)..that races do not exist...
There are skin types, eyelid shapes..etc...and they are a consiquence of the climate.
If you look at human DNK and all of the genes we are more that 99% the same in our "structure". And even differences..varieties...there are more inside one population that in between populations! So if there is a major catastrophy and only lets say Italians survive..more than 98% of ALL human variation would be preserved. I read this stuff in Spencer's work..
So races are really made up to feed ideologies and justify some acts...we should stop using the term race....The worst enemies of music? Money and Mathematics. Combined with music, they both do the exact opposite of what they're supposed to do. Money makes music cheap, mathematics makes it stupid and predictable.

I can see your point, but they don't often say things like "Coach X is the first coach shorter than 6' to make the Super Bowl" orThe only people we should try to get even with...

I believe it's news worthy, in the sporting world, simply because it is a first. Blacks have not been given the opportunity, in the history of the NFL, to coach teams. The first black coach was in 1921, Fitz Pollard. It wasn't until the Raiders hired Art Shell in 1989 that a black person was in that position again. Since then we have had only a few black head coaches, Herm Edwards, Lovie Smith, Tony Dungy, Art Shell (2nd time hired), Dennis Green, Romeo Crennel, and Marvin Lewis. 8 black head coaches in the leagues 80+ year history is a sad number."When one gets in bed with government, one must expect the diseases it spreads." - Ron Paul0
