well, i dont know a damn thing about him and didnt see his speech. all i saw was miller, our resident right wing, hard-on for jesus-lovin republican saying "dungy is the best christian ever!" i assumed the worst, so thought id try to slip in something kinda funny. guess it backfired. cos some of the christians round here apparently cant take a joke.
Im not a Christian, and yes I realize your initial post was being humorous, and thats fine. I commented on a later post you made where you more or less put ideas in his head, and I simply wanted to have it pointed out that the idea you attributed to him was not what he said at all.
Whatever. I probably just don't get the whole inspiration from god thing. You win the game because you worked the hardest and played the best. Bringing up faith seems odd to me because I'm sure many of the Bears have had to overcome plenty throughout life and also have faith in god. To me, bringing it up is like saying yeah, god helped me to get to this point and win the super bowl. But tell that to the guy on the Bears who is just as much of a believer and equally inspired by his faith as Dungy. It just seems silly...but oh well.
A lot of us face obstacles and draw inspiration from different sources. Some people thank god, JC, whoever....when you have faith in something higher, it can carry you through some really tough times, especially when you achieve your goals...I think that's the whole point of his take...I think it's pretty cool
It doesn't have anything to do with the Colts had more "believers." That is not the whole point. Each of us are individuals...Dungy has been on the losing side for years, and he used his faith to find inspiration to go on...maybe that's the point...he would thank his faith if he won the super bowl or if he went 0-16 for the next 3 years in a row. It's not about winning or losing the super bowl, it's about facing personal challenges. I just think it's a simplification to boil his comments down to "God wanted the Colts to win."
BTW - as a side note I feel REALLY bad for Rex Grossman...that guy has to feel horrible, and the media doesn't help...talk about a heartless assault!
And you ask me what I want this year
And I try to make this kind and clear
Just a chance that maybe we'll find better days
Cuz I don't need boxes wrapped in strings
And desire and love and empty things

Its pretty narrow minded just to write something off as silly because you dont get it. I am not religious either, but I do understand that some people believe there is a greater presence in the universe than themselves. He was more or less thanking God because of how fortunate he and his team were in this situation. That doesnt mean he feels that God made his team win and his team had nothing to do with it.

I'm just curious - do you also think it's wrong that after almost every game players and coaches form a prayer circle and pray with one another. I think there's a lot more spiritual aspect to the game more than most people think. I mean sure it's a violent game and I loved playing every second I did in high school and college, but after every game we always huddled and said a prayer win or lose.
I didn't say I thought his religious beliefs were silly. I said I thought it was silly to thank god for your team being fortunate in a sporting event. Big difference.
Fair enough. But still, it is an experience that most people on this earth will never have. Just like most people will never play in a band before 30,000 a nite. I just dont see the big deal if someone is religious for thanking god that they are fortunate enough to experience this type of thing.
Now I will say this. Trot Nixon who used to play for the Red Sox hit a homerun to win a playoff game several years ago. And in his interview he was saying things along the line of Jesus swung the bat for him and this and that. To me, that is silly, because I dont think Jesus cares about sports enough to where he will interfere in the game. But that isnt what Dungy was saying.

It still seems like he is thanking god for the outcome indirectly whereas your Trot Nixon example was more direct.

Well, I guess we will agree to disagree. I dont remember Trot Nixons exact quote, but it was something along the line that he didnt even swing the bat, that Jesus swung it. Where as with Dungy, I just think he was saying he is grateful to have been given the abilities and talents he has, but I still think he would tell you that he and his team made the most of the abilities they were given. He wasnt saying that god actually won the game.

I love the fact that people who didn't see it are commenting on it as if they have any clue.
It was an emotional moment for him I'm sure. He has lost his son, mom, and I think Dad all in the last 4 years or so. He has been criticized in the past (before he was a head coach) for his even tempered demenor and couldn't get an interview for a head coaching position because owners wanted a firery leader. Well, he stuck to his beliefs and handled himself his way, according to his faith and he ended up a champion. I'm sure he felt relieved, overjoyed, and above all had a great sense of satisfaction in that he could be the best and not compromise his integrity. And he wanted to share that thought with the world hoping to inspire others.
When some out of control, not so good a person thanks God for something it is certainly funny...and sad. But When Tony mentioned his faith, it means something because he lives it.

Liberals live for moments like these. Their very moral bindings require them to insult those who are religious. Specially Christians. Those are the real nut jobs of society. Now they're always quick to jump back and say that they don't care who practices what and where as long as they aren't bothered by it personally, but ultimately, I'm almost certain it keeps them awake each and every night. It's as if they use religion as a tool to make the case that they're more intelligent then those "fools."
Anyway, who really cares? These threads are created almost hourly. We get it. Religious people are nuts.

“It’s the idea that people living close to nature tend to be noble. It’s seeing all those sunsets that does it. You can’t watch a sunset and then go off and set fire to your neighbor’s tepee. Living close to nature is wonderful for your mental health.”
After I graduate, I will probably give thanks to God. Does that mean I am thanking him for the outcome (diploma) or the life he gave to me that I might use to do great things? They are two different things: the first being an effect and the second being a cause.
This reminds me of the man who refused to leave his house during a great flood because he believed that God would save him directly. He refused help from the firemen who came knocking at his door and the rescuers who wanted to save him from the roof when the floodwaters grew. Little did he know, of course, that God was in all of those people who wanted to save him.
Too many of you are focusing on God causing the game to go for the Colts and not that God gave Dungy the life to live and freely choose how hard he would work to win. God gives us free will and we decide how to live it - Dungy's team was simply better than the opposition.
All I know is that to see, and not to speak, would be the great betrayal.

Here's the thing...I too laugh many times when someone thanks god for winning a game or an award. This was not what Tony did. And even if it was, he certainly lives the life he would be preaching about so I'd cut him some slack.
Because I'm certain most people here take great pleasure in insulting anything religious on these forums. I'm not afraid to point that out to anyone here. It's the same worn out lines each thread. I'm not religious at all, and my soul isn't being invaded by evil terrorist angels who want me to be a Christian. But, this is where it gets interesting, I actually think some people here believe that.
