To prove you wrong here, my sister, 10 years ago, insisted to the rest of our family that her children were not going to be "typical boys and girls". She strictly tried to raise them, from infancy, to be in a sense, unisex. She treated both her daughter and son, 2 years apart the exact same. Same toys, same treatment, same everything. No girl or boy toys, they were all neutral. She wanted her daughter to be a tom-boy. Well, they didn't turn out the way she expected them to. The girl has very feminine tendencies, and the boy has male tendencies. In other words, our personalities don't evolve from what our parents teach us. Like someone else said, our personalities are pretty much there by the age of 3. Parenting styles aren't going to differ personality types, we're just born the way we are.
That doesn't prove decades of research wrong. It simply suggests that parents are powerless to do anything on an individual basis.
I necessarily have the passion for writing this, and you have the passion for condemning me; both of us are equally fools, equally the toys of destiny. Your nature is to do harm, mine is to love truth, and to make it public in spite of you. - Voltaire
I agree, it's a multiple of factors that contribute. But by the time my neice and nephew were 2 1/2-3, it was clear that they were very much different. That's too young an age to have society really to have any impact at all. Immediate environment, yes, but even more, I believe that you're born with your personality intact, and that you can't really program your child's personality from any angle at that young of an age.
Two identical twins of the same sex with the same parents. Same genetics, same environment, same everything are ultimately going to be different. It doesn't mean personality is hard-wired.
Take, cellular automaton Rule 30. As long as one cell is different, the outcome of the automaton is drastically different. It's a choatic mechanism and so is the brain.

Rule 30 is an elementary cellular automaton rule introduced by Stephen Wolfram in 1983. Wolfram describes it as being his "all-time favourite rule"[1] and details it in his book A New Kind of Science. Using Wolfram's classification scheme, Rule 30 is a Class III rule, displaying aperiodic, chaotic behaviour. This rule is of particular interest because it produces complex, seemly random patterns from simple, well-defined rules. Because of this, Wolfram believes that rule 30, and cellular automata in general, are the key to understanding how simple rules produce complex structures and behaviour in nature, such as pigmentation on seashells[2]. Rule 30 is named due to its binary representation, 00011110, which describes its rule set (as described below). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rule_30

Men and women have some very obvious anatomical difference, such as male and female sex organs. But I don't believe that we are naturally any different. What is in our minds is mostly what we've been subjected to and the way we interpret it. Up until the 1960s there was some hard-lines between male and female behavior in western culture (not the world). However, since women's liberation we've seen an explosion of self-reflectant behavior, people tend to behave more how they feel. Many men behave similarily to women and many women behave similarily to men.
But most of our behaviour in general, wether you are a man, woman, hindu, buddhist or rastafarian is the result of behaviour modelling, as children we learn how to behave within our physical and social environments. As adults we tend to look at other cultures and say "I would never do that.", by this statement we are essentially admitting that we are, in most part, a product of our culture, we are often disgusted or amused by another culture's traditions. These feelings of disgust and amusement are a part of us, guided by our cultural norms.
Yin & Yang basically says things are not black or white, everything had an opposite, but within every black is some white, the more black you have the less white, but there will always be white in the black. It doesn't make much sense to me talking about the colours black and white. However, it could apply to Jungian Psychology, with Jung's theory of Anima and Animus, however I feel that requires gender roles to be secure. At this point in our culture it's always an insult to someone to say "Men/Women are like this.."
Anyway, I just want to abolish this ancient myth that we are behaviouraly different by nature. Oh, by the way, I saw a video on youtube you'll like, check it out, Cute Otters
I think there is a lot of validity in all of this. However, the fact is, there are differences, whether it be by cultural influences, whatever.
All I'm saying is that men and women can and should compliment each other. I'd just rather look at the positives, I suppose.

Right, so... I focus on negatives, that makes us a good match?
I got an analogy. Let's say you had a cupcake, chocolate or whatever flavour you like. That's a positive thing. But let's say there is a big ugly spider on it or around it, that's a negative thing. So, when you say "focus on the positive" does that mean that you ignore the spider and reach for the cupcake anyway? I'm a negative thinker, my inclination would be to rid the cupcake of the spider, then all that's left is positive.

I would use my higher cognitive abilities to try and visualize the spider as the cupcake, but in the end miserably fail as I realize I lost my appetite in the process.
Honestly I really have no idea what that actually means...
Which leads me to asking...do the good head doctors still go for around $100/hr?

I was just saying, we have two forces interacting with us positive and negative. There is a lot of both in our lives, sure we can try to improve the positive or add more positives to our lives, usually in the form of material posessions and social status, but what of the negatives. Well, if we eliminate all the negatives, all that's left is positive and there is no need to convince ourselves the positives are more positive than they really are.
Not that it matters a whole lot, I'm happy focusing on negatives, as I'm sure others that focus on positives are happy as well. I just have a knack for problem solving and negatives are a big part of it.

I acknowledge reality, including the spider, but I focus on what I want to create. I determine my experience of reality because I'm the only thinker of my thoughts, or the only one who feels my feelings--this is one area that I have complete control of. I use my 2-4% waking consciousness to make sure I'm focussing on what I want so that I can harness my energy to create it. I've been through my share of awful situations. I'm huge on acknowledging what is real. That's my first step. If I feel negatively about a situation I fully acknowledge it (as opposed to denying or sugarcoating it), and then I release those feelings. I realize that my negative feelings are the product of my emotional history and that I can release that so as to create my experience NOW with independent self-willed thought/emotion. The negative experience is my internal sign for the need to create new sensations within, ones of my choosing. In other words: to reprogram myself. I then focus on generating thoughts, ideas, experiences and emotions based on what I want, whether it's a new cupcake, or whatever my heart desires. I can step out of the program loop into the create-a-reality lifestyle.

But, you admit, you aren't literally creating a new reality. You can't simply wish the spider away and it's gone. You need to physically interact with reality to get rid of the spider.
So, I'm confused. I'm identifying negatives within our social norms and gender models. I also see many positives in them, but there is much miscommunication over them. Everytime a man says "Women do this.." or a woman says "Men do this..." they are creating a negative image about the gender role and passing it on to others who may or may not reciprocate. In my experience, men and women tend to agree with each other, which further solidifies the gender model with negativity. If you are suggesting that you prefer to say "Men do this [positive]" instead of "Men do this [negative]" then I suppose you are postulating a positive gender model, unfortunately that is quite rare, and a very admirable quality indeed.
I guess, I'm just not understanding the language.

I think you are familiar with the fact that there is vast information that bombards us in each day. The information we hone in on and process is dictated to us by our programmed brain filters. So what we choose to pay attention to of the myriad combinations available at any given time remains reality, no matter how we look at it. I learned a long time ago that my general programming sucked and caused me to filter in and process life in a way that made me miserable and wanting to take my own life. Not to mention that I experienced many painful imbalances. I have also realized that no one is going to hand my dreams to me, so I have changed my perspective to happily and "will"ingly create dreams instead of problems.
As for spiders, I love them. I co-exist peacefully with spiders. I don't need to wish a spider away or remove it. I'm very cognizant of reality.
So, I'm confused. I'm identifying negatives within our social norms and gender models. I also see many positives in them, but there is much miscommunication over them. I just have always fit well within the genders roles in my life. I loved having my kids. My dream was to be with them and raise them into decent people. I loved staying home with them, and had no desire for personal success beyond that. I love when men are protective towards me. I acknowledge that in general, men have 2 1/2 times the musculature of women. While I lift weights for health purposes, I love that men tend to be stronger than I am. Why would I compete???? I love food and therefore love to cook--okay, I'm not great on housekeeping--but I'm artistic and I love home decor. I love dressing up and being feminine and doing my hair and getting attention for my appearance. I love when people open doors for me. I also open doors for others when I can. I also have numerous areas that I relate to men on, intellectually and logically being one of them. I've often taken non-traditional gender roles in taking the "intitiative" with men in terms of approaching them, etc. I've got a lot of strong traits...I'm in touch with my animus, so to speak and I love that balance. I find that because I'm comfortable with these things, that I naturally attract people who are like minded, and balanced as well, and can relate.
I realize there are a lot of things in society that appear as not-optimal. I also believe that on each level, everything has a function. And as we evolve, what isn't working will fall away as we increase our vision and find new workable solutions. We are moving forwards. and yes, we all play into the roles and stereotypes, positively and negatively. Ultimately we need both sides of the coin in order to have a coin. When I looked negatively upon men, I actually drew a lot of negative situations involving men in my life. and when I changed my view, my life and what I attracted to me changed, too.

If a spider on/near a cupcake threw me off balance, I'd consider myself a little imbalanced. If they pulled me from the pursuit of my dreams, then I'd get exactly what I was looking for.....what I'm programmed to see. And for many people that's okay.
I've had so much success with this approach. For example, I used to believe men were abusive and that the large majority were sexually assaultive. I then attraced abusive man after man and sexual assault after sexual assault. Since I've learned to focus differently, I've come to attract cool, intelligent, reasonably balanced men who can not only handle, but who actually appreciate strong, intelligent, reasonably balanced women. Within this philsophy, I have reason to believe I won't attact the axe wielding maniac.
