seriously, i keep hearing the same shit i did on '04 about how we have to vote for whoever the democrat is b/c we just can't afford to have whoever the conservative is win (tho in '04 they all said we would be free to vote for whomever we wanted in '08). so, why do you think you won't be so scared in 2012 of the conservative nominee??
standin above the crowd
he had a voice that was strong and loud and
i swallowed his facade cos i'm so
eager to identify with
someone above the crowd
someone who seemed to feel the same
someone prepared to lead the way

Obama wins the next election, runs the country like a typical Democrat, people begin to realize that the fact he is half-black does not translate into Hancock-style super powers to effect change, and then its back to square one ... The conservative phobia won't dissipate, though.

    agreed.

though I wouldn't be surprised if McCain wins this election.

    Yeah,
especially after that "incident" Arianna Huffington was talking about the other day on CNN.

Anderson Cooper asked her about Obama vs. McCain, and she said at the end of the day it would boil down to national security concerns. That there would be an event ... not necessarily in America, but somewhere in the world ... that would remind the public of national security.

    No shit, huh?

I don't want to put all my eggs in one basket,
but something around the DNC is looking promising.

If not, we still have that alleged Israeli nuclear device plot that Carnaby was chasing.

    Hmm.

    exactly!!

    War with Iran?

It could be anything, but something is totally going to happen in the next few months.

Getting sidetracked a bit, I suppose, but I just can't see McCain winning. There are a lot of people with huge concerns about Obama, and rightly so, but at the end of the day, I see him as Kennedy to McCain's Nixon -- or, at the very least, Clinton to McCain's Dole.

Elections in this country are still driven primarily by personality. Obama seems "nice" and "smart" and "cool" and "hip" -- and those qualities tend to win out over "old curmudgeon who reminds you of the guy who used to chase you off his lawn when you were a kid."

A shitty economy never, ever works in favor of the incumbent party, either.

I do agree, though, that some sort of national security event would tilt the scales to McCain's favor in a hurry.

As it stands, I see Obama winning the election, spending four years reminding everyone what they disliked about the Democrats and then the Republicans will be back in the White House in four years, when they've found a *real* candidate.

And that might be what's best for the country anyway. Or maybe that's just my silly pipe dream.

I still think a Democratic president with a fiscally responsible (one can dream, right?) republican congress is the best combination for our country.

I guess it would depend who that president was. I don't think Obama is it. Seems a tad too naive to me.

  • What I don't get is that the Republicans hated the Clinton years which were the most prosperous for every single person in my standard Middle Class family.

I think they hated that he was so successful as a leader and pretended that they hated him for getting some ass in the office.

For gosh sakes my dad was without a job for almost the entire second term of Bush's presidency. Thank the lord he finally got another one.

That's why we are welcoming another 8 years of a democrat in the Oval Office...hopefully.

I think most of us realize that the economy is cyclical, and has very little to do with the man in the Oval Office. But if it did ... people tend to forget that we were headed toward a recession at the tail end of the Clinton administration which (remarkably) didn't hit full bore until like seven years later -- and this despite the economic disaster that was 9/11.

If we're going to do the "were you better off eight years ago" thing ... the answer for everyone in MY standard middle class family would be no. We're better off now. Every single one of us.

But I do know this: We are all hanging on to our stimulus checks, just in case Barack decides we're all "The Rich" and asks for it back ;)

Maybe Texas is doing well...who's in the Oval Office again...

But over in CA things are not that great.

I will throw in our relationships with other nations were better with Clinton. I think he could have had a real Coalition of the willing after 9/11. Not just UK and a bunch of small countries that contributed next to nothing in the war efforts.

I would say local economies are more the product of local governments. Cali has been a democratic state for so long (Yes, I know Arnie is a Repub ... barely). Look at the states and cities hardest hit economically (Michigan, D.C., etc). Almost all of them have been voting Democrat for nearly a century.

Basically, poor people have been voting Democrat for 50 years ... and they're still poor.

The eight under Reagan were the most prosperous of my lifetime, including the so-called golden years of the Clinton admin.

I'd put Reagan on the short list of Greatest American presidents. At any rate, it's grossly unfair to lump him in with the Bushes.

The game of choosing sides and comparing economies during presidencies completely overlooks what the Fed was doing. The Fed is like the root, and the rest of the idiot politicians are like retarded gardeners.

You would think that CA elects Democrats but we have only had Grey Davis as a Democratic Gov in the last 20 years. I was surprised by that myself actually.

And to top it off he didn't even get to finish his term because he was blamed for the energy crisis which really had nothing to do with him. The Recall election that led to Arnie was SOOOOOOOO shady that Karl Rove must have been involved somehow.

I just know that everything was better from food prices, strength of the dollar, gas prices, job market, housing market was better under Clinton and he should get some credit for that.

You can't blame Bush for everything that is wrong in the U.S right now but I can blame him for not offering any solutions.

The breaking point for me was a couple of months ago when he didn't even know the avg gas prices were over $4 a gallon. How can you be that out of touch with the country you supposedly run!

and if we elect another tax and spender (democrat) there will be more poor people, ergo, more democrats...thus ensuring their victory forever...that's brilliant. Tax them till they're poor, then have them vote democrat to get government handouts!!!
