I was in no way, shape, or form a fan of Falwell, but when a human being dies it is never a reason to laugh or "light one up and celebrate". It's not a left vs. right issue. The man has a family who are grieving now. Get over yourselves and show, if not the man, his family a little respect.

Well put ledvedderman, my thoughts exactly.

I really doubt his family is perusing a Pearl Jam message board, so there's no harm done.
Still, I was taught not to speak ill of the dead, so I guess I can never talk about him again now.

First, if he held himself up as an iconic figure for a political purpose, which he did, it is in fact a right or left issue. 2nd, I don't think too many of his family will be reading this BB.

He didn't show any respect for me or my friends who died on September 11 when he said what he said about what brought their death.
... and the will to show I will always be better than before.
In the real world it has nothing to do with right and left. On this board, the poor taste that robbie showed seems to be heavily dominated by the left.
And that's why we're seeing every leftist poster here jumping all over this! Oh wait....it's just a small few. I'd imagine the same number would be of righties would be doing the same if Al Franken died. The very fact that you need to make this a competition as to which has the most taste is telling.
If you want to tell people the truth, make them laugh, otherwise they'll kill you.
Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.

It has nothing to do with right and left... I'm sure when someone like Michael Moore or any other left-wing fringe idiot dies, there won't be a shortage of jackasses on the right who are happy about it. Poor taste isn't exclusive of either side.
Well said.

So reducing yourself to his level is the right thing to do?
I had to hear what he had to say, his family won't hear what I have to say and I don't care that they do. I will have the good taste of not spitting my venom in his family's face. As hippiemom said, I doubt his family hangs out here.
... and the will to show I will always be better than before.
Well, I don't think anyone is bashing a dead man. I think they're bashing what he stood for when he was alive.
Agreed. If some one would have said something bad about him yesterday, no one would have cared. But now that he is dead, its supposed to make a difference about how we felt about him? I didn't like the guy, I didn't like what he stood for, and I'm not sad that hes dead.
I have lived in Lynchburg the vast majority of my life and all I can say is that I'm very curious to see how this city responds to this and what impact it will have both short and long-term.

Exactly. I don't understand peoples' high horse on these kinds of things. He's dead. He was for the most part a terribly judgemental and self-righteous person of the worst kind. Some of the things he advocated and stood for are despicable. IMO, someone's death is a perfect time to reflect on their life. If you treat other people like shit, expect to get that reflection upon your death. All the more reason to live a decent life, no? Are we supposed to hush up with 'respect' when Hitler died? Hussein? Charles Manson?
To me, he was a hateful man that belittled the defenseless and supported destructive thought and actions. He deserves little respect. I won't go after his family and I wouldn't say anything in earshot of them. As was said, it's highly unlikely any of them are here looking for our opinions. I respect their assumed grief and that of anyone who loses a family member. I do not respect a terrible man, alive or dead.

The man never did a good thing in his life... he stole from the poor to make his fat ass fatter!!!!
Big wahhhhhhh he's dead......
He stole from the poor? Do you have any evidence of this or is it just a cliched left-wing platitude?
You may not have liked his political views but Falwell was actually an extremely charitable person who opened up numerous halfway house's and homes for unwed mothers as part of his ministry.

He was a very, very divisive figure - using religion and fear to attempt to persecute others when it was unnecessary.

I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen.'"
"I therefore believe that that created an environment which possibly has caused God to lift the veil of protection which has allowed no one to attack America on our soil since 1812."
I don't think "lesbians" are responsible for what happened on 9/11 - and I don't appreciate this guy trying to fuel hatred.
...lesbians are just hot, pure and simple.

Same, more or less. If the circumstances of their deaths are similar, I'll bring up the suspicion of secretary bonking.
You carry your nose a little high around here, I think.

There is far more hate on the left side of the aisle than the right. Far more...it's really not even close.

I can't celebrate a death, but I can say that the world is a better place without him in it.
I can only hope for his sake that god isn't as judgmental as he was.
I'm thinking Jerry's god is every bit as judgemental.
