    'i'm not talking about this thing with vincent. i'm talking about all the shit i've put you and davey through all these years. you coming to me has made me realise what a burden i must have been. what a burden i still am. i've got this feeling that quite frankly i've never felt before. i think it's responsibility or something, i don't know. but whatever it is, it's making me consider what you're going through. last week i wouldn't have cared. i just can't believe you and davey stood by me as long as you did. and that you didn't just give up. now that i'm actually needed i don't want to let you down.'

    wow i think that's more than i've said to freya for years. quite possibly ever. but i did mean it. i could say that most of what i did was out of my control, but that'd be denying responsibility for my actions. i know there were times when i could've gone one way but decided writing myself off was a better option. an easier option.

    She just stared at me for a few seconds without saying anything. When she spoke she couldn't hold back the tears that had only just dried up.

    I don't really know what to say Anna. I would like to be happy. And really I am, but I don't dare to be. My gut says not to trust what you just said. And I feel bad for that, I don’t mean to be this harsh.

    well freya's response is not much of a surprise. dr. mcintyre warned me that making amends to the people around me might not be welcomed with hearts and flowers. he said their scepticism should be expected. considering all the years i had to atone for, just getting them to listen would be a victory for me.

    'i understand that freya. your trust is something i'll have to earn. but i am sincere in wanting to make amends.'

    i stood up and then bent down to hug my sister. i brushed the hair from her face and kissed her forehead.

    'you gonna be okay? i think we both could do with some sleep right about now'

    'sure. there should be some in the fridge.'

    i walked over to the fridge to check. opening the door, i pulled an already open bottle out of the doorshelf. i grabbed a glass out of the cupboard and placed both on the table in front of freya.

    'knock yourself out. i'll see you in the morning.'

    with that, i left my sister to her own devices and went back to bed. i hoped arlo was still awake.

    hamish didn't feel so good. he'd spent the night drinking with friends and was nowhere close to recovery. he looked at beth through half closed eyes. he said nothing but left the door open for beth. she took this as an invitation.
    when she found hamish he was curled up on the sofa.

    'jeez you look like shit. what'd you get up to last night?'

    just then a girl beth didn't know walked into the room. she and beth looked at each other. beth could see the girl was trying to gauge whether she was a threat.

    beth's suspicious tone awoke hamish from his alcohol induced stupor. it was too late of course, but he realised what a mistake it had been to let beth into his home. he stood up and came to beth grabbing her arm more roughly than he should have.

    hamish let go of beth's arm and stalked off into the kitchen. beth followed and basically cornered him.

    'what the hell are you thinking being with that girl? i'm just gonna go ahead and assume you know who she us.'

    beth was livid.
