I like it. As with most Pearl Jam songs it has a purpose. For example it's perfect for the morning after a one night stand.
Evacuation is the perfect song for taking a shit to and singing it while taking a shit can certainly help things along. Coincidently it's also good after a one night stand.
And then there's Sweet Lew which simply makes you want to take a shit.
I like Gone personally and although its not up there in the full catalogue there are too many PJ tracks to list here that I am less fond of and as for Avocado as an album Army Reserve and Unemployable are worse by far!!
'All the rusted signs,we ignore throughout our lives,
Choosing the shiny ones instead'
i accidentally stumbled upon this song shuffling through my i-pod.
it actually infuriates me that such a talented bunch of musicians can come up with such a heap of total shit. fuck it pains my ears it's so terrible.
thank you very much
its definetly the most overrated pj song, yeah, your right, the more i think about it, its really shitty, should have stayed a b side imo..

Everyone just needs to keep in mind what this whole thread is really about. It's people's opinions. There is no right and wrong. This type of thread happens over and over and over. Best song, best drummer, worst album, etc... I love Gone! The song's message of starting over and sacrificing everything for the chance at a better life is really a romantic idea. How many of us have felt stuck in a rut, or feel afraid of getting old and looking back on life and regretting the decisions we made or didn't make. For me, Gone is about the fear of regret and doing something about it. I can definately relate to the message of this song and that's why I like it. That's the great thing about Pearl Jam's music. I can usually find something in any song that inspires me, whether it's a lyric, message, guitar riff, drum beat, melody, chorus, on and on. These guys are so talented as individual musicians and artists. When they get together and create music as a group, it's an amazing thing. The diversity of their music is why I like this band so much. I think that every PJ fan will acknowledge the fact that writing commercial hits isn't an agenda with this band. Having said that, I still don't understand how any fan could say they "hate" any particular song.
Love the song. Unfortunatlely their are those of us that feel the need to get attention any way they can. By using a strong word like "hate", that in turn gets a reaction, just what the attention getter wants I guess??
On a brighter note...it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas up here....
Peace,

a solid song. came up on the iPod the other day and i have to say i quite enjoyed it.
pj songs i dislike: get right, around the bend (never dug it, sorry), low light, pilate, sweet lew, all night, black red yellow, evacuation, gods' dice, grievance (good live), the colour red, comatose (good live).
I love this song. Especialy for phrase: this american dream i am disbelieving!
It's so nice to hear it from American... don't ask me why. Just becouse...

It's bad... I agree...maybe they are trying too hard.
I just don't understand Pearl Jam at times. They can write the most amazing songs, but then come up with complete and utter rubbish. Compare Evolution with Gone. Is this really the same band? I guess it doesn't help that on some songs Eddie sounds like he is singing in a deep bath tub.
Even though you aren't required to like it, the fact that you don't like it does not mean it's not a good song!!
true enough, but i'm convinced it is a bad song. i mean....just listen to it.

There is not one bad PJ song. Just listen to the crap in the charts and then go back and listen to Gone.
tiraste la posta papá!(L)
I really love Gone!!
I love Pearl Jam, the last cd, i thinks awesome, simply awesome
Altought(?) i dislike parachutes!!

Ya know apples are the worst fruit God ever created. I mean how could God create a fucking orange or a watermelon and then go and create something like an apple????!!!
Gone is all right, but Big Wave.....uhg, I hate that song. I think it's the only song I hate that they have created. All in all, Pearl Jam has not been my favorite record, but that is because I do not relate to it.
I still think it's a really good album, I just never listen to it.
When life gives you lemons, throw them at somebody.
i really like the solo-versions, especially the one from AOL, but i have to say that i was dissapointed when i heard the album-version. the full band version takes a lot away of the emotions of the song.
not goign to read through 8 pages, but I like gone... and it was written by Ed...
Have you ever heard Unemployable, Ghost, Cropduster, FoxyMorphandlemomma, Bugs, Unmployable, Unemployable, or Unemployable?
Another "Gone" supporter....if you call it the worst song in the catalog, what does that make "Bushleaguer"????
BTW, I am not a Bush supporter, the song is just a weak stab at an easy target.
All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a thousand enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed.
serious . I never listen to that shit ...or this last one
I have a low member number and i sit down when the band plays anything off the first two albums . I hate the stuff . terrible
I'd rather hear Binaural and Riot Act cover to cover

"Gone" is a snooze until about a minute in, and then it gets going in a way I like. I would prefer a shorter intro, but other than that it's a keeper.

Gone is good. You suck.
Except in this case. In which the original poster's opinion is, indeed, wrong.
