Well, I still think that Pearl Jam is the best band out there today. In recent years there are not many bands whose live shows are better than their studio albums on a consistent basis, and that says something. And I like their recent efforts - I quite like Backspacer, for example.
But you know, rather than reel off my standard list of all-time favorites - Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, and Bruce Springsteen, all of whom are still out there making music, I'm gonna change it up a bit and post a list of 5 NEWER bands I really love. For me, that is a lot more interesting than reading about a bunch of bands whose members are all in their 40's and 50's and who all have, like 9 or 10 albums out that you'd have to be living under a rock not to have heard.
My top 5 bands who came into prominence during the 2000's:
1. Avenged Sevenfold - love a band who refuses to be pigeonholed into a single genre - these guys, all of whom are still about age 30 or younger have written and performed great songs that could be categorized as metal, hard rock and even country(-ish). Their lead guitarist, Synyster Gates, has the potential to be the best guitarist of his generation, IMO - this young man can seriously shred!
2. My Morning Jacket - on a lot of other lists in this thread, so I don't think there is any need to explain this one. Solid band with lots of talent and a unique creative flare.
3. The Decemberists - because quirky is good.
4. Shinedown - like A7X, another band you would normally heard on Sirius's Octane channel. As hard rock goes, these guys are pretty doggone good.
5. Bullet For My Valentine - pretty much the same comment as for Shinedown. Solid hard rock/metal that's a good fit for Octane.
Runners up:
The Shins - LOVE their music, but lately they can't seem to focus and make records. Seems like every time I read about them it's about side projects, etc.
Kings of Leon - these guys are good. I especially loved them when they were first starting out and were so fresh sounding, having spent most of their lives sheltered from rock by their religious upbringing. My only fear about this band is that, as they move forward, what was once fresh will begin to sound really mainstream alt rock. Which for me, would be the kiss of death.
30 Seconds to Mars - these guys don't make music videos. They make movies with musical accompaniment. At least that's the way it seems sometimes. Immensely talented, if a bit...erm...full of themselves.
Alter Bridge - I was never a Creed fan, because I always viewed them as Pearl Jam wannbes. But this band takes the solid musicians from Creed...and pairs them with a really good singer. Ah!!!! That's more like it!
Apocalyptica - LOVE some of their collaborative efforts..once I got past the idea of 'cello metal'.
The Birthday Massacre - best industrial goth band there is, IMO. Awesome singer who really softens up the otherwise harsh industrial sound.0 -
Arcade Fire
Ryan Adams
Wilco
Jack White (anything)
Broken Social SceneBelieve me, when I was growin up, I thought the worst thing you could turn out to be was normal, So I say freaks in the most complementary way. Here's a song by a fellow freak - E.V0 -
So many great bands listed her so far but didn't see anyone mention INTERPOL!! Even if you were let down by the last album or 2 (not me personally)...they are amazingly underated."If you want a friend, feed any animal." - JA
"Don't let it get you down, you know, still give your love, just give it away...I love singin' that part." - EV0 -

They are a great band of course.
Some of these aren't really "bands". Oh well.

Pearl Jam
Decemberists
Iron and Wine

PJ of course, so I won't even include them in the 5...
1. Tool. Even though their albums are few and far between they are still very near the top of my list.
2. Eels. These guys have gotten me through the rough times almost as much as PJ has.
3. Band of Horses. Probably my favorite of the "new" bands out there.
4. Queens of the Stone Age. I just started listening to these guys a year or two ago.
5. Foo Fighters. Wasting Light is one of the best albums to come out in a long time. Actually, since Them Crooked Vultures' album.* Cincinnati, OH 8.20.2000 *
