Thanks everyone for your lists. I've been listening to some great music I've never heard before since starting this thread.

Not your favorite bands...but the best.

I know everyone will base their picks off of different things. I'm basing mine simply by quality of recent studio recordings and excitement of live shows.

    Here are my top 5:

1- Radiohead (every album is amazing, bootlegs are intense)
2- Pearl Jam (my favorite but imo #2)
3- Arcade Fire (i think neon bible was the best album of last year and their live shows are wonderful- trying to watch everything that is happening is impossible)
4- Mars Volta (unbelievably talented- in the studio and on tour. their shows make you trip with no drugs involved)
5- White Stripes (i know only two members and one plays very basic drums but you have to admit they are charasmatic onstage)

this is interesting because i can see people bashing my list like crazy.

    whats your top 5?

Over three years later and I am updating my list:

    1- Radiohead
    2- Pearl Jam
    3- My Morning Jacket
    4- Fleet Foxes
    5- Arcade Fire

Would love to see others who have posted here in the past to update their list too. And of course new lists from new people.

Love to see some love for The National. They just missed my list. Last year I saw them 3 times- once from second row at a secret show (and they played High Violet in its entirty weeks before it was released :D).

    1) Arcade Fire- only 3 records made and all are great. can't really say that about any other bands for me

    2) Broken Social Scene - again have not made a bad record yet

    3) The black Keys - have not liked all their records but most are really good

    4) Mumford and Sons - not 1 song i dislike from them

    5) The Decemberists - each record is growing on me

i am trying to look at band s that i feel have made great or really good records out in the past 2 years and not look at past records and their legacy. thats why you won't see Pearl jam, U2, radio head.

    (In no particular order)

    1. Pearl Jam
    2. Nine Inch Nails (their time off means nothing to me)
    3. Radiohead
    4. Untitled Jack White Project
    5. Muse

I would include Rage Against the Machine if they ever made new music, just on the strength of their live show, but screw 'em. I love Soundgarden, but Chris needs to prove he's back to writing good songs before I can include them in any lists. Foo Fighters also god some consideration for their excellent live shows, but the albums are hit and miss... and for all the haters of the latest Muse album, they're wrong. Amazing band.
Is it too much to ask for a full-blown Temple of the Dog set? Probably.
