Kanye West is a great artist.

Yes he's an idiot, but alot of great artists are. Why people on this board feel the need to bash other bands or performers is beyond me. My guess he was told by the organizers the wrong info about PJ's set lenth. I could just imagine the outrage if it was Kanye who played long and made PJ wait.

From what I can gather he can only blame himself for what happened. He asked to move his set back to 2:45 AM so the elaborate stage would actually "glow in the dark." I'm sure he would have started on time if he had not requested the change.

Apparently, he didn't feel he could deliver a solid performance unless his stage was glowing in the dark.

I'm already waiting for him to cry at Lollapalooza again...
he whined two years ago because the sound wasn't set up right. can't imagine him headlining this year and getting that all set up properly either.

so glad there'll be a Rage/Radiohead/NIN headliner opposite of him

-He's the lamest rapper EVER and his songs all suck....every song
-He gives Bush reason to hate Black people.
-He has no business at a rock festival anyway.
-He wanted to play at 2:30 so his stage would glow in the dark, which is gay
-Pearl Jam in any way, shape, or form upsetting him is the great thing

I don't see what any of this has to do with Kanye West being black??!!??

    yeah what slightofjeff said.

and black, white, yellow, or blue, he's a horrible rapper. I can't believe that there are people who are fans of him. I refuse to believe that people who are fans of really good rap like Snoop, the Beasties, Tupac, Wu-Tang, or Rage would actually like this guy. his fans must all be high-school douchebags who wouldn't know good music if it slapped them on the head.

Kanye IS a talented artist. He knows how to put together a song with a beat, a catchy chorus, and (sometimes) meaningful lyrics. He's definitely a step above most rappers I am familiar with.

On the other hand, he's shown time and again that he's quite a primadonna. How someone can act like he does in public and not feel absolutely embarrassed about it is beyond me.

I think the guy is far too melodramatic but he's also a genius. I think it reflects very badly on Pearl Jam fans who are actually cheering the band on for disrupting West's set. It's great that they played for three hours - but to act as if it was for the sole purpose of annoying Kanye West is a bit stupid. Not to mention that this is a festival, not a Pearl Jam show.

the glow in the dark show was actually not that bad, this girl i know took me to one stop in camden....and the show was exciting...kanye has a ton of energy"

but in the end...at the end of the show....kanye had to validate his own performance with a speech that really took away from the performance"

it was something like "they told me i didn't have to do this. They said just give them the same shit they are used to and they will be happy. But aren't you guys glad i gave you all this. Wasn't this more than you are used to?"

Being a pearl jam fan i was disgusted, i tried to picture pearl jam playing an epic show and then ed giving some kind of validating speech at the end like that...it was a joke...only kanye....really ruined a pretty decent performance

Hahaha I find it so funny that Robert Randolph started the "Kanye sucks" chant. And I can't imagine waiting that long to see Kanye- especially after PJ just finished playing.

Yet we're both on a Pearl Jam message board...?

And nice jump on lumping all rappers together. I'll just go and listen to Pearl Jam and Nickelback.

how am I lumping all rappers together? My first post that you quoted praised the Beasties, Snoop Dogg, Tupac, Wu-Tang, and Zach from Rage. so there's five artists right there I wouldn't lump with crap like Kanye West. 50-cent on the other hand is horrible enough where I would lump him with West...though their music is very different from eachothers.

I'm done arguing though. the first time I heard one of his songs, I hated him. and I can't (and never will) understand how he gets critical acclaim. I guess I'm just a straight-up Kanye West hater and I always will be. thus, any argument we could have about him and/or his music wouldn't be very fair because I'm so biased.

but yeah, I wasn't lumping every rapper together.

the reports im getting from the roo are that wests stage was set and ready at around 330am but He refused to go on until phil lesH stopped playing
phil actually ended his set about 90 min early- told his crowd to go check out west and the prima Donna still took his sweet time getting on stage
hence hippies throwing stuff on stage
Im a million miles away from home and I cant find a telephone...

    1. It's Kanye's fault for rescheduling
    2. There's no way in hell he could follow up to the show Pearl Jam did.
    3. Even when he did come out, he didn't play for even an hour.

Dude, I heard dozens of people bitching about Kanye. NOT ONE USED RACE during their rants. I can assume you are a liberal because you used the race card. It always seems to be the left that makes race an issue in this country. I look at Kanye and see a rapper that can produce some poppy hits, which is fine. You see a black man. You are pathetic. Here's my two-cents about the Kanye performance. It's kinda long, but I still have a bad taste in my mouth. Yes, Pearl Jam went over their time limit (which was fucking awesome), but they were done by 1am. So they went over about 45 minutes. So Kanye should have been expected to go on by 3:30.

It took them for-fucking-ever to set up Kanye's stage, but honestly it wasn't that impressive. I was expecting a lot more. What pissed me and my buddy off was that most of the time it looked like the crew was just standing around, not doing a damn thing. I don't know what kind of issues they were having, but most of the guys were standing around talking. I believe it was around 4am by the time they got everything set up.

We were expecting Kanye to come out right away, to get this damn show going. Nope, didn't happen. So the stage is done, everyone is just standing aound waiting for something to happen. Where the fuck is kanye? The crowd is getting restless. We start chanting stuff like "Bullshit, Bullshit" and "What the fuck, What the fuck." Eventually people start throwing glow sticks at the stage because it's empty, the crew is done, and everyone is waiting for something to happen. It was hilarious, even the camera men on stage were pissed, as one gestured the crowd to keep chanting.

So 4:30 rolls around and Kanye finally comes out. I'm expecting him to give the performace of a lifetime, to show the crowd that it was worth the wait, and to show his appreciation to everyone for staying up so late. Now I will say this, he performed his songs well with a lot of energy, and it was refreshing to see a rap performace with only one person on stage, instead of the whole entourage. But he walked off the stage after one hour. One fucking hour!!! Are you kidding me?

Now this wasn't scheduled to be some act on one of the smaller stages. Kanye is headling act, on the main stage, and he only played for one hour. Even worse, he did not address the crowd one time during the show. No "Hey Bonnaroo, thanks for being here" or "Sorry for being late". Not a damn thing. He might as well have flipped us off after he walked off the stage because that's what it felt like. I realize the sun coming up doesn't help him to achieve the glow in the dark effect he was going for, but grow the fuck up and sing your songs for the people that waited four hours for you. He deserved all the hate he received.

Every other performer I saw expressed their gratitude for being able to perform at bonnaroo, and thanked the awesome crowd. Not Kanye. His stage wasn't glowing, so he didn't give a fuck.

that's pretty weak...but exactly what I'd expect from West.

I don't get why Kanye West was a headlining act at Bonnaroo anyway. I have no problem with rap or rappers performing at festivals where the other acts are predominantly rock bands. but headlining what used to be a just a jam-band festival over the likes Phil Lesh and Les Claypool? At a rock festival like this, rappers should be headlining side-stages or playing early in the afternoon on the main-stages. but Kanye is such a freakin' awesome huge star that the Bonnaroo organizers probably felt that he would get new fans to turn out to Bonnaroo. yeah right, Kanye West can get people to turn out for a Vibe Magazine anniversary show. People were went to Bonnaroo to see Pearl Jam, Metallica, The Raconteurs, MMJ, Widespread Panic, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Sigur Rós etc...not Kanye West. His set should have been in the middle of the day on Friday instead of the festival making special accommodations for him so his stage can glow in the dark.

I wondered how he was still playing at 4:30 AM when I though I woke up for a minute... turns out he actually STARTED when I woke up. Pearl Jam was amazing... epic set for sure. As far as Kayne West goes, there was no fucking reason for him to be there in the first place. Pearl Jam and Metallica were as good as it gets though.
