i liked archeologists a lot better once i read the lyrics... i had trouble hearing any words besides the "belly of a whale" part, and i thought it was a bit repetative.... but they're really lovely, now that i know them!

    The archeologists found
    Some winged boy's remains
Stained by the fire and clouds
In the belly of a whale
    The day the lightning came.

    The belly of a whale....

Packed up and shipped to London
    Discard, discard, the rotted parts
Preserve the heart and the lungs.

i'm not sure what it means, but i love the imagery! :D

Like so many Wintersleep lyrics...I love them, yet don't really know what they mean.

I've fallen in love with Lipstick:

    Am I made of plastic
    Am I made of sand
Am I made of pieces of a broken hand
    Am I beautiful or worthless
Like there ever was a difference
I will paint my face with lipstick
I will scar the clouds with kisses.

  • ok... since we're on a lyric kick, :) i'd like to share Drunk on Aluminum, which is crammed full of really unique words and imagery:

oh my, are you the beast again?
is it the violence you like?
oh my, i feel it crawling in,
    gnawing, reptilian,
    in the lost lonely night.
    i wanna know
    cut out the sickness
    cut it in self defence
    cut the yellowing eyes
    skylines, bloody and cancerous
    color the dead patches
make it white, make it white

wild eyes, i feel the teeth again
    gnawing and imminent
    in the lost lonely night.
oh my, give me the words again
    paint it aluminum
make it white, make it white.

i guess i should ask... what do those words make you think of?

i makes me imagine an old white metal patio table, all bubbled with rust spots, in the middle of the the badlands :o:)

    something like this: http://www.gomedia.us/arsenal/images/texturepacks/rust-prev1.jpg

Easily my favorite song on the new record. Speaking of which, I just got back from the Calgary show and it was freakin' brilliant! The new songs sound incredible, and the older stuff was great too. "Orca" was particularly amazing and the crowd sang along to every word. "Jaws of Life" brought the house down.
"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."

omg! i forgot that the calgary show was coming up! that's sweet!! Glad you had a good time... :D

Jaws of Life is certainly a crowd pleaser!

In Hamilton though, I think it was Murderer that got the biggest response... in fact, Paul laughed and said something to the effect of:
"Ok then, I think we'll just play THAT one again!!"

    hehe... too funny.

I always think I don't like Murderer when the intro kicks in. But by the time it gets to the singing at the end, I LOVE it.

Did anyone else notice this? What do you think? lack of variety/creativity? or does it tie the theme of the record together better?

Obviously, I don't think there's a lack of creativity ;)... I think it ties the whole album together....

can you think of any others?

    Clouds come up a lot.

People Talk: I'm afraid of God and all his angry clouds.

Lipstick: I will scar the clouds with kisses.

I don't think it's a lack of creativity. A lot of artists have recurring themes in their music and lyrics, and a good example of this is Pearl Jam.

On a side note, I ordered the three albums from the Wintersleep website on the 4th of Novbember. What did I find waiting for me when I got in today? Only four days later, all the way from Canada! 10c should take a leaf out of the Wintersleep delivery book. ;)

    Just thought of another. Monsters.

    Thanks,

I purchased all three CDs and really like the 2nd and 3rd albums. I actually don't really like the first one. It's like they discovered the Electric Guitar inbetween the 1st and 2nd albums. It's not so much that it is a bad album, but it only has one speed, and tends to drone on.

So I haven't read through the entire thread so I don't know if it's been mentioned, but anyone else notice the singer's voice is very similar to EV's voice. There are certain songs that could be posted here and 90% of the folks around here would think it's Pearl Jam or EV solo. (mabey a good way to turn more poeple on to this band?)

I'm going to see them this Friday, can someone tell me how long their set usually goes.

Well the first album is great to me, as it's the first one I got into. Something doesn't need to be loud to be great...and that is quite evident on that album. I think it has more than one gear. It has subtle depth like a lot of their work, but it takes a while to find it.

As for the singer sounding like Eddie...I don't hear it. At all. They sound nothing alike that I can hear. What songs do you think people wouldn't be able to tell apart from Eddie?

i can see what you mean about the first album... i actually love it, until just after Orca, and then i don't care much for the last few songs.... Sometimes i skip Butterfly too... :o

Like urbanhippe said though, love Sore, Avalanche, Caliber, Snowstorm... and of course.... ORCA!! :D

i'm so jealous that you're going to the Mod Club show... you're going to love it!!! when i saw them in Hamilton a few weeks ago, they played for close to two hours....

The first album is more acousticy, but has a few classics on it, as mentioned previously....
