I don't think so. Sarah tells me Wintersleep are starting at 10pm.. and I was always under the impression they were headlining this time. This tour seems to have been a weird mix of support and headline gigs for them.
COME ON MONDAY!!!
No, I just looked, they're playing tonight at the Scala.
enjoy the wintersleep shows, fans on the other side of the pond!
ceg was telling me that many of you guys were catching on to them over there, so i hope they have excellent turn outs for their shows. they deserve it...great band, great music, great guys.
p.s. go loel! you'll see him go to town on the drums!
I just want to say for my first post in this thread that Insomnia is a fucking amazing song.
"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"

Loel was a fucking MONSTER on the drums.. half the time I was like 'How the fuck is he doing that??? And why can't I???' Amazing.
'We're learning songs for baby Jesus' birthday. His mum and dad were Merry and Joseph. He had a bed made of clay and the three kings bought him Gold, Frankenstein and Merv as presents.'

You're not wrong my friend. Now go and get familiar with the rest of the catalogue.
Oh yeah... and where were you tonight? SIX QUID!!
Set list:
Miasmal Smoke and the Yellow-Bellied Freaks
Archaeologist
Dead Letter and the Infinite Yes
Weighty Ghost
Murderer
Search Party
Encyclopedia
Oblivion

Danse Macabre
The crowd were there to see Wintersleep, which was fantastic; I wasn't sure if they had fans over here, turns out they have quite the following. And they were pretty surprised themselves. They fed off it. One of the most energetic bands I have ever seen, perhaps the most, despite having a tiny stage.
Sarah and I came through the disabled access doors to find ourselves on the front row. Which means that we were able to heckle the guys (in a good way) and secure our first place in the queue for signing cds and shaking hands with Paul, the lead singer.
They were such awesome, unassuming and humble people; they make music because they love it and I heard it straight from the horse's mouth, they're not into being famous: they're 'quite happy as they are'.
By the way, they really, really, really played the fuck out of the songs. I mean really. Intense.

awesome! great review! well put as well. i'm happy you got to meet the boys. genuinely good guys. genuine artists and musicians.
...and what the fudge?!?! six?!?! that's a steal for a show like you're going to get from wintersleep! fantastic.
I've now got all 3 albums on my iPod. This band is genuinely one of my most exciting discoveries in a while.
Edit: How good is 'Caliber'? Fuck!
fanfuckingtastic!
have to say major props to ceg for the thread and all the posts and getting so many positive people on board! as you mentioned, ceg, it's was way too long since i've stopped by the thread and i can't get over how many people are catching on, loving the music and live shows. i'm enjoying reading all the positive words for the guys. it's just about as fanfuckingtastic as caliber! :D
I wonder if the guys have any idea they have their own little corner of the Pearl Jam message pit
yes, i think restlesssoul posted a link to our little thread over on the Wintersleep board.
I'm not sure if the boys have read it... i kinda hope that they haven't, because i think at one point way back in the beginning i posted a review where I said i wanted to "eat Paul Murphy for breakfast"...
i'm sure he knows i meant that in a completely platonic way...
ps. welcome back mookie. it's good to have our official halifax "insider" back!
~~*~~ ...i surfaced and all of my being was enlightend... ~~*~~
The guys were really tight, and amazingly intense and OMG did they ROCK!!
They were completely overwhelmed and more than a little surprised at the love in the room
When they came back on for the encore, we asked them for songs off the other albums and Paul was genuinely amazed that there were 'fans' in the audience.
They rocked the place hard and the songs were all so much harder and grittier than the album versions.
I got the chance to meet the guys after the gig and met Paul and got my cd signed *swoon* I was completely starstruck, but they were so easy to talk to and so unassuming and friendly, they made it easy.
We asked him when they were gonna release 'Night Sky' over here and hit the big time and he said 'Well, y'know we kinda like it the way it is'.
I hope we made enough of an impression on them to bring them back round these parts soon
I watch this message board like a hawk because it has led me to so many new bands, and Wintersleep seems to be a name that gets tossed around a lot here. I've listened to some of their songs on Myspace and they sound pretty amazing.
I understand they've released three albums so far? Age old question, which album should I get first?

My girlfriend and I are both obsessed with them. We went to see them last night in London and they were touring their latest, Welcome to the Night Sky; that's her favourite. My personal favourite is the second one, Untitled. They're all brilliant though, you'll not be disappointed by any of them. Perhaps you could get Welcome to the Night Sky and work backwards?

i don't know how much of an "insider" i am anymore...they are all over the world now! at least i will always have my memories of a dark and dank hailfax bar and the sounds of the infant wintersleep filling up "months of mondays".
...imagine "orca" or "caliber" being cranked out on a tiny stage with about 20 people in your basement...adding some cement floors, smoke, a bar, and some dank (you have to have the dank! ) for ambience. that'll rustle up the neighbours.

yes. Welcome To The Night Sky and work backwards.... that's what I would suggest too...
harmless, i'm so glad you and hippie had fun the other night.... now it's us canucks that are jealous of all your UK shows!!!

Oh it was amazing!
Insanely short set, but the guys hanging around afterwards more than made up for that.
Loel is a genius, Paul was amazing and the rest of the guys just rocked out.
Btw, this is completely irrelevant, but Paul is sooo much taller and much better looking in real life. And such a genuinely nice guy.
And you don't get to be jealous just yet We need them to come back a few times first.

you've convinced me...
i'm going to rip up the subfloor in my basement, not run the dehumidifier all summer, buy a pack of smokes and a few cases of beer, and invite Wintersleep over.
you have to come and tend bar.

but i was please to see that on my flight out to Halifax on the weekend, that Welcome To The Night Sky was one of the selections available on the airline's "on demand" audio system!

Woah Woah Woah Daddyo!
I've just realised... 9 songs?!
Considering the back catalogue of 3 albums they have, to only play 9 songs (I know it's their latest release but 7/9 of the same album and absolutely nothing off one album?!) is a bit of a piss take. Six quid or not I would be mightily pissed if I went to my local pub to see a band and they only played 9 songs... imagine how pissed i'd be if i'd done what I wanted and travelled over 100 miles?!
It's not even as if they mixed the songs around a bit, the songs remained in album order from Archaeologists to Search Party!
I've been going to stupid amounts of gigs every year since I was about 15 and never have I been to one where they've played only 9 songs.
I'm kinda glad I didn't go. I'd rather save up and see 'em in Canada
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...
... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.

I take your point, on one level; they only played one song from my favourite album, Untitled. This tour has been a string of very short gigs in small places.
BUT, they played more energetically and with more skill and urgency I've seen since Pearl Jam at Reading, and I do admire that they're playing small cheap venues here and with two bands as support. It marks them out as a humble bar band in a climate of hyped-up, pretentious 'scene' bands. And we only turned up at 10 when they started.. didn't bother watching two support bands. If I had done I'd have probably been disappointed about the pay-off after a long wait.
This gig whet my appetite for more Wintersleep when long gigs CAN be quite draining.. I was left wanting, and to me it was refreshing.
My personal opinion.
'We're learning songs for baby Jesus' birthday. His mum and dad were Merry and Joseph. He had a bed made of clay and the three kings bought him Gold, Frankenstein and Merv as presents.'
The band themselves were really dissappointed with the set lengths they were given. Guess its all to do with promoter wrangles etc. They are gonna come back and hopefully they'll get the kinda headlining set they deserve (Loel also promised me tracks from the first album)
Still on a gig high from Monday I've cranked my gig count up to 5 now !!!
It was great to meet some members of the board too sorry If I embarassed myself I was a little over excited
