I don't really get the thing with that city and color guy. The music is really bad. Well maybe not bad, but terribly mediocre. Seems like an odd choice for a guy of Gord Downie's calibur to do a song with. I heard he did a song with the Constantines, which is more like it, they are actually a decent band.
I don`t find City & Colour bad, just kinda dull. His songs are quite well-written if you listen to them, but they all sound too similar and seem to bleed into each other. There`s only so much angst-ridden melancholy a person can take. ``Sleeping Sickness`` is probably the best and catchiest song the dude has written, and that`s probably why Gord likes it. The story goes: When Dallas Green was writing the song, he couldn`t find a guitar arrangement he liked until he heard the Hip`s ``Thompson Girl``. He ended up borrowing part of the main guitar riff from that song, which worked perfectly for his lyrics. He figured since he blatantly borrowed from the Hip, he`d try to ask Gord to come down and sing on it, which of course he did.
As for the Constantines, I agree they`re an amazing band. Gord`s performance on ``Do What You Can Do`` at Virgin Fest was a beautiful moment.
"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."

holy shit that new feature on the hip site is effin awesome!!!!!! you can type in what shows youve been too and the setlist thing keeps track of what shows you've seen. my first hip show however has no setlist. so mine is not too accurate....
it was vancouver 1997 thunderbird stadium. anybody there?
Van '98, Sea I+II '00, Sea '01, Sea II '02, Van '03, Gorge, Van, Cal, Edm '05, Bos I+II, Phi I+II, DC, SF II+III, Port, Gorge I+II '06, DC, NY I+II '08, Sea I+II, Van, Ridge , LA III+IV' 09, Indy '10, Cal, Van '11, Lond, Van, Sea '13, Memphis '14, RRHOF '17, Sea I+II '18, Van I+II, Vegas I+II '24
What an amazing show! Front row, Gord is a nut on stage, and I love it!
Believe me, when I was growin up, I thought the worst thing you could turn out to be was normal, So I say freaks in the most complementary way. Here's a song by a fellow freak - E.V
maybe they will finally capture their raw sound again like on "Fully Completely" and "Road Apples"..
or maybe we'll have to wait for the live versions of everything like last time..
Personally I think Fully Completely has the worst sound of any Hip album. It's a perfect example of a brilliant record tarnished by lousy production. Oh "Pigeon Camera", you deserved so much better! The album is way too polished, the guitars are too wimpy, and Johnny's drums sound like a plastic spork hitting mashed potatoes. I remember an interview that Rob Baker did a few years after Fully came out where he talked about how depressing the recording process was for that record, mainly because the band was never in the same room together and all the instruments were recorded seperately and then pieced together. He said the band prefers to record live together in the same room, and then go back and add the necessary overdubs afterwards. World Container definietly has that slick Bob Rock polish, but at least the guys got to play in the same room, and Gord gives the best vocal performance he's ever given in the studio. He really knocked it out of the park, especially on songs like "Lonely End of the Rink", "The Drop Off", and "The Kids Don't Get It". Having said that, I too am looking forward to a more raw sound for the next album. Most of World Container was recorded at Bob's studio in Hawaii, so perhaps the change of scenery and being at their home studio will result in a more live-off-the-floor sound. Regardless, I'm already drooling in anticipation of a new Hip album. Everytime they put one out, it's like Christmas.

I agree with this. Fully Completely is my Fav Hip album but the production is awful, thankfully 7 of the tracks are remastered on 'Yer Favs' but unfortunantly 'Pigeon Camera' wasn't one of them :( 'In Violet Light' is another album spoilt by lousy production. I actually think 'Evolutions' captures their raw sound better than most.
Holy crap! Everybody needs to go to thehip.com right now. A new video was just posted of the guys recording the new album in Bath. You can hear little snippets of new songs, and it sounds awesome so far. They recorded around 25 songs and they've now whittled it down to 14 for the album. Speaking of which, that's a damn nice studio they have there. It looks like such a beautiful place to make an album.

Anybody seeing them at Pemberton this weekend? Sadly I'm not going, but I imagine it's going to be insanely cool seeing the Hip share the stage with Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers.

Awesome. So exciting!!! But if they're heading to Maui, I'll miss seeing Baker on my walk to and from work, and laughing when The Hip is playing...
The Bathouse is pretty amazing. It's pretty high security/high priority though, so when an alarm goes off the OPP attends straightaway to try to prevent thefts... :(

i don't know why they don't remaster all of their early catalogue. if ever a band needed it, it's the hip. u2 is doing it. not until day for night did they seem to get decent sound. though they have had spotty points during the career. in violet light and trouble at the hen house both being albums with some great songs that just sound completely lifeless. world container sounded fantastic though.

LOVE The Tragically Hip. Some people call them the Canadian Pearl Jam.
"I always thought Pearl Jam was the Pearl Jam of Canada. Are they the Tragically Hip of America?"
-Gord Downie's response to an American journalist who asked him what it feels like to be the Pearl Jam of Canada.

LMAO! Yes, Gord, yes, they are the Tragically Hip of America. Now I want to ask someone in Pearl Jam what it feels like to be the Tragically Hip of America!
I was almost completely out of my obsession with them and that Bath House recording video sucked me back in.....!
the new tunes give me the impression this may be their best work yet...!
note to fellow hipsters...
after following this band since 1994 from my outpost in Boston...i now have watched for the first time the "locked" music video featured on the hip.com...
It is awesome!
only took me 14 years..!
now if I can finally visit canada we could be on to something!

Sure, Coldplay is playing at Pemberton. But the festival's peak for many was Saturday night's set by The Tragically Hip.
The beloved act has played its share of mega shows and really knows how to take the energy to the next level from the opening notes.
Much of this appeal comes from the fact that the Kingston band provided the soundtrack to so many Canucks' first kisses, drunks, road trips and grad weekends. And the rest can be credited to the bizarre, yet effective, antics of lead singer Gord Downie.
He was in awesome form; executing some leaps that came straight out of the Simpsons, traversing the stage like the chief of staff at the Ministry of Silly Walks and so forth. All the while with that distinct voice laying down those stream-of-consciousness lyrics.
The audience was by far the largest for any band so far -- even the Bacardi B-Live tent had probably emptied. Because everyone just had to be there to sing along to "Courage," "Music at Work" and many more.
It was a sweaty, hit-laden concert by the band that everyone at Pemberton had come to see; even if they didn't know it at the time.
Live Nation's Shane Bourbonnais had said he felt that the Hip had to be at the Pemberton Festival. It surely seemed to be a match made in music.
Perhaps the band should come next year and do one of its albums from beginning to end. Such gigs are the rage at major festivals everywhere now. Fans who bought early-bird tickets could vote on which album it would be.
Honestly, the only losers in this was Vancouver's Black Mountain, which had to start when the Hip was chugging full steam on "Poets.""
I once again drove through my downtown shopping area / storefront area of my sleepy south shore suburbia (massachusetts)..
all my windows down.. moon roof open...
cranking "50 mission cap" at full volume..
having never set foot in Canada!
someday soon though..!

Pretty standard setlist for a festival where they weren't the headliners. Everyone I've talked to who was there said the Hip completely stole the show from Tom Petty and the Flaming Lips, which isn't hard to believe. Here are a couple of cool vids from the show with excellent sound quality. Enjoy!
