ok.. this is now my favorite version of NOIS...
seriously.. voodoo child intro..
Gords "we are the same" chant..
and I have never heard him screech that "I don't wanna swim" part as intense as that..
then the whole band goes "heavy metal" on the song for two minutes straight..
goddamn they still got it..
BTW.. did I spy a Red sox hat in the immediate foreground of the camera!
Nice!
Yup. What an amazing version! Just when I think I've totally lost interest in this song, they rip out a killer version like this one and blow my mind in the process. Like I said; word on the street is that the Hip completely stole the show. One review mentioned the fact that it was raining before they went on, but the sun came out as soon as they hit the stage. Then it got cloudy and rainy again when the Flaming Lips went on. Was it just coincidence? Or did the Hip rock so hard that they actually parted the clouds, haha. I fuckin' LOVE this band. Can't wait to hear the new album! November can't get here fast enough.
"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."

All these years we all knew that Downie has the moves, but little did we know that he actually incorporates aspects of various tribal weather dances to keep the weather working for them!
Just think, we're gonna have a new Hip album *AND* a Gord Downie/Sadies collaboration all in the same year. Can you say multiple EARgasms??!! Here are some quotes from the article alluding to the album:
"we've been chipping away recording with Gord Downie. We've been talking about how, 'Wouldn't it be nice if we did something one day?' We've been in the studio and done some work since. We did a couple songs that'll be on a compilation for the Waterkeeper Foundation."
"We've got a bunch of songs we've been working on with Gary Louris (of the Jayhawks), but I don't think we'll get a chance to revisit them until December. But considering the album that we're working on with Gord is going to be original and with an equal amount of input, we don't want to sell anything short there."

nice!!! that should be worth a listen....i have seen the sadies open for the hip at least 3 times i can remember and saw them at their own show here....they are really cool...i love that surf sound they have to them at times...they can really play...

we need them to open of more "unplucked gems" from the Hip "live series" while we wait...
don't cha think?
That would be like the icing on the cake. I'm also still waiting for them to put out that long-rumored rarities/b-sides album. When they were promoting "Yer Favourites", I remember Robby talking about the possibility of putting out a proper collection of unreleased songs. They probably have hours and hours of material locked away in the vaults. For their new album they apparently recorded around 25 songs and have since whittled it down to 14 for the finished album. I wanna hear those other 11 songs!
I know for a FACT they have just as many awesome B-sides as PJ's Lost Dogs..
"Get Back Again" is just one example..
But the Boys "don't get it" so I am afraid neither will we..
Hope I am wrong ...but WTF, its been 15 years without a b-side release..
this would add up to a boxed set at this point.. yes?
I would imagine that after 20 years of writing and recording, the Hip could put out at least 4 or 5 discs worth of unreleased material. I think we'll eventually get to hear that stuff, but this band's focus has always been on what lies ahead, rather than what they did in the past. Gord Downie was once asked which Hip album is his favorite, and he replied "the next one." I've always loved that about these guys. But I agree it's about time they put together some kind of proper b-sides release. Even if they just threw them up as downloads on iTunes or something like that, I'd be perfectly fine with it as long as I could get my grubby little hands on them. Off the top of my head, here's a list of unreleased Hip songs I'd love to see on a b-sides album someday. Click on the links to hear the tune:

Really?? I could've sworn that Pemberton was their last show this summer before heading to Hawaii to finish the new album. Are they playing a secret show somewhere that I don't know about?

Hip! Hip! Hip!
Can't wait for the new album!

He says it'll be out in 2009, which is kind of a bummer considering the initial rumor was that it would come out in November of this year. But he also thinks the band is really onto something with this record, so I don't mind waiting. Another masterpiece in the vein of Day for Night or Phantom Power maybe?? This is gonna be a long winter without any new Hip to listen to, but I'm sure it'll be worth the wait. This band fuckin' rules.

This is by far my favorite Hip site. It's run by a friend of mine from Ottawa, and it's probably the most comprehensive website when it comes to deciphering the meanings behind the songs. Even Dan Aykroyd e-mailed him once. Check it out:
My favorite piece on that site is the story behind "Nautical Disaster". It's absolutely fascinating. Proof that Gord Downie is a lyrical genius of the highest order: http://www.hipmuseum.com/nautical.html

Yup, the Hipbase is indeed the place to be. Welcome, Sean! I've been told this is the longest running tribute thread on the PJ message pit. I'm proud to say I've played a big part in that fact.

I was actually listening to "Opiated" from the "Live 10" series last night...
is that the most killer version of a Hip song ever reduced to accoustic?.... or what?
Agreed! That song is so damn rare and I've only ever heard 4 or 5 live versions of it, most of them from crappy sounding audience bootlegs. The one from Live 10 is the best version I've ever heard. Now we just need to get our hands on a killer live version of Pigeon Camera and my life will be complete.

I was at (and filmed) the 7/28/02 Hip show in Somerville, Ma where Gord forgot the words mid-song, someone in the audience gave him the wrong verse and screwed him up even more and he just had to stop singing it..
They didn't play that song live again for years..
must have scared him pretty bad, huh?
