I have a 5 posters that need framing but looking at the DIY sites the cutting and joining tools run into the 100s. Not sure if it will really save me that much over pro framing. Is it all really essential? Or are they just fancy tools for doing what basic tools could do with a little care?

Sorry for all the questions (and this may be a long shot) but does anyone know of a european version of americanframe.com? Only site I can find is diyframing.com but there's probably something better out there.
and what's the difference between 'exact' measurements and 'glass' measurements for the moulding? Are board system mount cutters worth the extra money, or is handheld cutters easy enough to use without going wonky?
Again, sorry for all the questions, just a bit paranoid it'll all go terribly wrong.

It seems pretty clear to me from the posts around here that Michael's 50% "deal" is a joke. No real frame place is going to charge $500 to frame a poster, unless you're getting some crazy CRAZY shit...to say that $250 is 50% off is just a lie and a way to get you in the door. There is zero chance that on a non-sale day they would charge you $500. I'm sure even when the "sale" isn't going on, they give you the discount and act like they're doing you a favor when they are still overcharging.
In my experience, it's best to go to mom and pop stores. You'll get better service, and almost certainly won't have to pay more than $200 no matter what you decide to do.
alrighty, updated pics...AGAIN! got my EV batman poster back from the framers, i love it, love it, love it! i swapped out the small methane 2006 tour poster and was able to squeak in the EV poster on the ledges with a little reworking. i am VERY happy!
i *always* had the idea/vision in my head to display them as such. did a fair bit of research into finding the *perfect* ledges for them. i went with pottery barn 9 - 4' holman ledges. be forewarned they ARE quite pricey! however, for me, worth it. you could absolutely make them yourself if you the time and inclination. my husband is very handy but couldn't be bothered....and he didn't mind me spending the cash to do exactly as i wanted, so it's all good. there ARE many other ledges out there, but imho, none are substaintial enough to support such large prints well. even aesthetically, look too light/small to balance even the visual weight of the artwork. just my 2 cents.

Im sure Ive said this b4 ..................But........ I really want to stay in your Guest Room...... and I love what u did with the pics...........is that between 2 pieces of perspex?? Looks great....
There are a couple of other band's posters, but, as you see, it's primarily Pearl Jam. Just shows we've been to (with the exception of Kenyon Hall).
Very cool..............can I stay in your basement also...:)
Would u let me play your Benaroya Vinyl?........

So I'm getting my EV Batmobile poster framed at Michael's at the 50% off sale.. dropped it off earlier today (the girl working there couldn't stop gushing about how beautiful the poster is!). I can't say I'm too happy with the pricing either. I was expecting $100 MAX since it's supposed to be half price, but the estimate she first gave me was $250?! With the sale?! Eeeesh. Dashed my hopes straight to the ground =P. She said that they have the sale fairly often, and I actually replied with something like, "Well, yeah, who would pay $500 for a framing job?" She said that the value was good because of the sheer QUALITY I was getting. Heh.
I ended up paying $150 for two layers of matting (a thin blue outline to match the blue in the print and a thicker white around it) with a thin black frame. Apparently I also paid for the glass, because it's "museum quality" glass and the poster shouldn't fade..
I have a couple questions, though, guys!
First, is the special glass worth it? You know, the kind that reflects the sun's rays so the print doesn't fade? Because that's what cost me the most.
Second, would you recommend going to smaller places to frame this kind of stuff? I'm just a bit hesitant because I'm not sure they have the best materials.. or care. But maybe they have superior materials and care than a bigger store like Michael's? This poster's the first thing I've ever custom framed.
Thanks! . And I'll post a photo of the framed poster when it's ready! Can't wait!

It sounds great! I can't wait to see photo's. I'm in the process of framing two posters. The first time that I'll custom frame PJ posters. I did custome frame a small drawing that a friend made me at Michaels a few year ago and it was expensive but it turned out nice. There is a smaller shop my husband told me about that is near us and I'd like to give them a chance but I'm so nervous about them being ruined. I wish I was more creative so I could do it myself.
Your color choices sound great. I don't know about the materials so i can give you any input there, but I would have done the same with the glass, if they said it's better I would've believed them too.

I think Michael's is a joke. Their "50% off sale" is total garbage. They just inflate their price quotes, and then give you the "discount." They would never be able to actually charge $500 for a framing job.
Mom and pop stores can vary in quality, but generally its a much better way to go. The materials are the same, and they will care much, much more than the teenager who frames your print at Michael's. The mom and pop stores NEED your business much more, and want you to be a repeat customer. You have a much better chance of forming a relationship and getting an actual opinion at a smaller place. Ask around and get some recommendations. Personally, I would be more nervous leaving my stuff at a Michael's than at a smaller shop.

You found a blue to match it? Wow, I couldn't...wound up going with a black frame and matt....we couldn't find any color mats to correctly match the colors in the poster. Looking forward to seeing your job....and IMO Michaels sucks, take it to a mom and pop place. As for the UV glass...it's worth it if it's going to be in the sites of direct sunlight.

Yeah, I know! I half-jokingly asked the women working there whether they bumped up their prices right before the sale, right? And they were like, "Is that even legal? You would be fined so much for that! That's false advertising!" Blahblahblah.
Ooh, you've definitely convinced me. Next time I have something to frame, I'll definitely go to one of them.

I did find a blue to match it! And also an orange that was pretty close.. I couldn't choose between the two, and initially, I was going to go with triple matting, blue and orange with a thick white around them, but that was the way expensive option =P. You're making me doubt the closeness of the blue, though! If it was so difficult to find one, then maybe mine's not really that close to the colour in the print? =/. I thought it was, though.. so did the lady at the store. I also wondered about getting yellow matting, but they definitely didn't have anything even close to that brightness =P.
I'll definitely post it here! .
Hmmm... direct sunlight. My room is really sunny, so I guess it was a good investment.

OMG Nina, me neither, i never understand it. I've been going to shows since '95 and I never meet hardcore fans although they must be sitting around me since i have 10c seats. Maybe it's cause i'm too shy.

thus far, have had only one pj fan as an overnight guest in the room. haha.
and actually, that is a prebought frame. i knew i'd seen em, just took a bit of hunting to find it again. it's 2 thick pieces of plexi with 2 silver magnets that hold it together. simple and easy, and this way you can still view both sides of the picks. i bought the frame at bed, bath and beyond...had a hell of a time tracking it down. i think plexi frames were more popular in the 80s.

Yeah u are right about the plexi frames and the 80's
As for the UV glass...it's worth it if it's going to be in the sites of direct sunlight.
Not at all. Even UV glass won't protect from direct sunlight for long. Even low levels of light and artificial lighting (particularly fluorescent) will fade it over time.

Please listen to this person.
I had Michael's do about 10 posters for me before switching to Deck The Walls earlier this year. I explained to them that I had a lot of posters to do (and I also had about 6 family pictures to do at the time) and they were nice enough to give me a very aggressive discount - a better discount than the mom and pops around me. The deal is that I have to take in 2 posters at a time every 2 months and I keep the discount.
After I got 4 of them back from DTW, it made the ones from Michaels look really bad. Luckily, DTW was nice enough to fix one of the Michaels screw-up jobs for free and they are very willing to work with me to get my other posters straightened out.
Of course, a chain store is only going to be as good as the people working at your location, but my experience has been great.
I will post some pictures in the next couple days so you can see the difference.

Looking forward to seeing your job....and IMO Michaels sucks, take it to a mom and pop place. As for the UV glass...it's worth it if it's going to be in the sites of direct sunlight.
Wow, unreal, where did you get the ledges that the posters sit on? I may have to steal this idea from you!
Thanks! That's all very reassuring . You guys are so nice here, I never realized it until just now! I never have good luck with meeting nice PJ fans at actual shows..
Maybe it's cause i'm too shy.

steal away!
i *always* had the idea/vision in my head to display them as such. did a fair bit of research into finding the *perfect* ledges for them. i went with pottery barn 9 - 4' holman ledges. be forewarned they ARE quite pricey! however, for me, worth it. you could absolutely make them yourself if you the time and inclination. my husband is very handy but couldn't be bothered....and he didn't mind me spending the cash to do exactly as i wanted, so it's all good. there ARE many other ledges out there, but imho, none are substaintial enough to support such large prints well. even aesthetically, look too light/small to balance even the visual weight of the artwork. just my 2 cents.
good luck with your display!
Let's just breathe...
I am myself like you somehow
thus far, have had only one pj fan as an overnight guest in the room. haha.
and actually, that is a prebought frame. i knew i'd seen em, just took a bit of hunting to find it again. it's 2 thick pieces of plexi with 2 silver magnets that hold it together. simple and easy, and this way you can still view both sides of the picks. i bought the frame at bed, bath and beyond...had a hell of a time tracking it down. i think plexi frames were more popular in the 80s.

I wonder how much it would be for an airfare from tasmania to iowa??
Yeah u are right about the plexi frames and the 80's
Did u try for a mystery poster Bazzer?
