Anyone can do it..just have to try and once you do you wont go back. No one said throw the frame on it...just buy the materials from local shop and DIY. Framers these days are taking advantage of poster collectors. They buy the stuff for $50 it takes them 15minutes to do they make you wait a week so you think it takes a long time and then their like $200..come on...
Yeah , but I would rather pay the extra 50 bucks and put it into the hands of someone who has been framing for 20 + yrs. Plus, it'll keep these mom and pop frame shops afloat. Its good for the economy !!

When you want your poster framed and don't want to not spend $200 you go to your local frame supplier and DIY.. touché
You obviously could DIY and have it come out nice
But there are many things I am not positive about like acid free backing, no glue mounting, properly measuring everything.
I havent framed most of my posters, but the few I did cost at least 100 bucks each, could I have done it myself for 50? sure. but for 100 it is perfect, I didnt have to figure it out myself, i didnt spend alot of my time on it, and if I ever need to resell it(knocks on wood) I know it is in mint condition.
They look great...and as for $200 being expensive to some people that's fine. I have no desire to learn how to frame......IMO $200 is a small price for something to last a lifetime on your wall and be considered art and a conversation piece.

CupofJoe - why are you so anti-professional framers? To each his own, ya know. maybe you don't want to spend $200, but for other people its totally reasonable. I just got 3 professionally done for $440 - was worth it imo.

440 for 3 is not bad at all...not so anti professional just dont like seeing people get ripped off but 200 for one ...thats crazy
OK...maybe I'll price around again an try one that still unfortunately sitting in the tube. But I still cant get over the pricing factor.

What? So $150 for pro framing is OK, but $200 is a rip off? I really want to see some examples of your DIY framing. I've seen some (not yours as far as I know) and they usually don't look quite as nice...
Here's my first attempts at framing. I got the frames, mat boards, and backing boards from American Frame, and put it together at the Washington Framer's Workroom (http://www.framersworkroomdc.com). It's great, you pay for the glass and a $5 table fee and you can use all of their materials and equipment...
Nice work. How much did glass run at Washington Framer's Workroom? I have usually just bought the plexiglass from American frames and done the work at home but the workroom seems like a pretty sweet way to go.

The glass runs about $30 per frame, depending entirely on size and which type of glass you get. I get the middle of the road option, which I think they call conservation glass, that blocks 98% of the UV rays. There is museum quality, which is not very reflective and looks super nice. They priced it for me for that Kansas City poster and it was like $100 for the glass, so I went with the $30 option. I prefer real glass to plexi, but it does make it a little costlier.
When all is said and done, I would estimate I'm saving approx. $50 per frame, but I really enjoy the framing process, so all the effort is worth it to me.

i'm definitely gonna try the DIY route. the rabbet depth is the only confusing part to me. it seems to be important to leave at least 1/8" for the spring. is the suggesstion of 5/8" rabbet depth from the wiki a pretty good universal estimate?

one of my good friends went to school in boston. BIG PJ fan, but doesn't have a great appreciation for fine pster art.
long story short; i went to her appartment about a year ago after she moved home from boston to find mansfield 98 hung in her bathroom with absolutely NO frame whatsoever. the thing looked like went through a freakin' warzone: torn all over the place, faded, MORE than just pinholes!
boy was she surprised when i told her how much a mint one goes for on fleebay.
i should snap a pic of it. it's condition broke my heart :(

awww ... c'mon, that's nearly ten years, what a relationship she has with this print ... no matter the condition ... it's a memory.
You should have let her keep her peace and not told her how much it's going for in mint condition.

anyway back DIY framers; i'd love to see some examples. is it easier to work with metal or wooden frames as a beginner? is glass really worth it? i guess it's best to find a local glass supplier...

I haven't dealt with rabbet depth at all...definitely something I'd like to know more about, maybe some of the others that DIY can weigh in?
I highly recommend at least trying it, especially if you like to work with your hands and feel creative. It is satisfying and fun, and kind of makes you want to be a framer....*kind of*

i'm assuming you probably had to, just maybe called it by something else. taken from the DIY wiki:
make sure the frame choice has a deep enough rabbet depth to fit all the layers plus leave at least an 1/8 inch for the spring. In most cases for posters, a 1/2" or better rabbet depth is needed for one or two mats but may be tight. I prefer 5/8" on most things I frame. For example, the demo print has 1/8" backboard, 3/32" Plexiglas, 3-1/16" mats which total to 13/32". Adding the print thickness of 1/32" brings it to 7/16". Adding at least an 1/8" for the spring, a minimum of 9/16" rabbet depth is needed. A 5/8" rabbet depth is being used which is a perfect fit.
so i guess it's just the amount of room the frame allows for you to fit the glass/plexi, mats, poster, and spring to hold it all together.

oh, I see, I guess I didn't realize it had a term. I never dealt with any springs, so I don't know what that's referring to. All the frames I've used so far are wood, and I think any standard wood frame will have enough depth to accommodate the glass, poster, backing board, and several mats. I double matted the Kansas City poster, and I still had plenty of room in back.
