That is a shit job, Im sorry, it looks GREAT but no quality framer would return a project with the mounting corners showing!! Then he's turning around and selling your poster he dry mounted in his store? That is just shady. There are corners that are not full triangles like the ones this guy used, they are thin and follow the square corner. If the space doesn't allow for corners you dont use them. He should have used an acid free t-hinge if he didnt have the room. Take it back and tell him you want it done right. This framer sounds like either an idiot or is not flying straight. SELLING THE PRINT HE RUINED? He should be sending that off to his insurance company... unbelievable.

Yeah, I'm scratching my head wondering what this guy was thinking. I think he was so paranoid about my worries about the last adhesive mount he wanted to prove that he didn't do it that way this time and the only way to keep the sig showing was to keep the mat at the extreme edge of the poster, thus revealing the corner mounts.

I'm not taking it back to this guy, but will probably give him a phone call and try to get a credit from him for what it will cost to get it re-matted at another shop.

    ugh.

I contacted another framer who has done good work for me in the past and told him my saga... this is what he said:
I know what you mean about the corner mounts showing, even though they're clear. I recently used some on a rare 1960's Jefferson Airplane concert art poster, and because the image was printed right up to the edge of the paper, there wasn't enough border to allow the mat to overlap the corner mounts. However, this is preferable to applying any type of adhesive or tape, to keep the piece in mint condition. There are corner mounts that I sometimes use that are called Maxi-View, that are notched out, rather than a straight angle across the corner. (See below.)

These can be less obtrusive, but sometimes still show through the mat opening if there is not much border on the print for overlap. Do you recall if the image was quite close to the edge of the paper? The other concern is the size and weight of the paper. On larger pieces like yours, the notched corners don't offer quite as much support, and the print may be more likely to bow out away from the backing. Another option may be to use straight-edged print holder strips that are the same type of archival clear material, but are placed at intervals along the edge of the paper rather than just the corners. These overlap about 1/4", a little less than even the notched corners, but also sometimes show if the image is close to the papers' edge, and again don't offer as much support on larger or heavier prints.
So unless there is a wider margin of border on your print, the type of holders on there are probably best.

I have been a framer for 6 years now and our company and me personally would never give a piece back to a customer with the corners showing like that, we would discuss all available mounting options to reach the best solution. There are a ton of non harmful hinging options that framers and even museums use, they are activated with a small amount of water and then they can be removed with a small amount of water when the time comes. I do this all the time. There are paper pastes that we use, linen tape, Japanese hinging paper the list goes on and on. I have been trained by a CPF, she uses these methods all the time as well

I just don't understand if you told him you wanted the signature to show that he didn't expalin the different mounting options to you. Framing can be a compromise. If you are THAT set on two three inch strips a 1/4" thick NOT touching the artwork than mounting strips and corners are your only option BUT, if you want the signature to show then you have to live with plastic showing which is not something I would want personally. I have suggested that people cover the signature before on BRY and nearly got lynched for it, but seriously you know its signed, its not going up in a gallery, cover Number 7's sig if you want it mounted with corners. Again you need to compromise... now if artists would just sign their work a bit higher this wouldn't be an issue.

Number 7 are you listening? ;) He has a habit of doing this.

Finally had the funds to get my Cincy 2006 poster framed. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out ... sorry for the poor quality photos. I couldn't find my camera cord so I had to use my phone.

I was wondering if I could get some suggestions. I'm looking to finally frame my Montreal 2003, but I'm stumped as to what colour I should matte it with. It is HOT PINK with the bicycle:

    http://www.expressobeans.com/public/detail.php/1740

I thinking maybe black matte, but not sure...

    any ideas?

    Thanks.

btw...I will post pics when done.

If I am not too late may I suggest that you keep it simple. perhaps a fat black frame say 1 1/4" wide with a double white matt 1/8" and 2 1/2" on side and top and weighted at bottom with 2 3/4" border. This way you avoid any other pinks conflicting/not matching poster. The poster itself will sing...

    For your consideration. Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it is already at the framers, I decided to go with the simple black matte as per previous suggestion. The pink sure is bright! I figured the only way to go was either black or white due to the colour. Will post pics when its done, :)

Thanks man, I tried using 1.5 inch bamboo but couldn't ever miter the corners right, this turned out better than I thought it would.

To comment on the borgota, I saw a frame just like that about 2 months ago and actually thought of the borgota. Looks great.

I've been waiting for Brad to sell a couple on his site, but the chances of that look slim at this point. I'm not going to go starting a new thread on here and beg for someone to hook me up, but seriously does anyone have a pink one sitting around I could buy or trade for?

Back from the framers, nothing special frame wise. Simple white silk matte over black with a simple black frame. I like the prints to take the glory. Sorry couldn't get a good shot without some reflections:

First without flash, to show the depth of the frame:

Unfortunately it makes my self framed '96 PJ Charlotte Emek next to it look pitiful. I was so naive about framing WAAAYY back then. ;)

good point on letting the print take the focus, especially that Coachella one ... man I could look at that one all day ... I just hope my New Year's resolution isn't "get Coachella print framed" ... I better take it in before then ... shame on me.

Seems like from an email he sent a week or so ago that he is going to put some up for sale. When I got the email I had already taken mine to be framed, even though it was damaged in shipping. I would have liked to have framed a mint one but didn't think I had another shot. Oh well, I still love it.

I'm curious, if like the 10k lakes, he'll have variants available of the Coachella print ... there are only two listed on ebeans, and neither strike me as much as the original print ... but not many have surfaced, so maybe he still has some to sell ....

I was at the show and I got one of the ones with some light scuffing on the back which I didn't notice unti I got home, the front is 100% pure and there are no dings or creases or any damage tot he front ... remembering the guy next to me picking through the posters and taking out all the perfect ones (and who knows, maybe doodled ones) annoys me when I think back to the stack of 20-30 I saw him walk away with.

Whatever, congrats on getting it framed .... that's awesome.
