It's funny how signs are sort of front of you but you don't realize them until later.  When I watched them on Howard Stern's show while Eddie was talking about Waiting For Stevie, he described a harmonica as a chromatic harp, I got the sense that the other guys were like, "seriously?"  It was a weird energy that I didn't think much about but now that time has passed with Matt saying why he left, it makes me wonder if he just had enough of Eddie being Eddie, if so, I understand.

I noticed in his recent interview, he mentioned recently talking to Jeff and Stone who he's obviously known longer so that makes sense but I can't help but think he was over Eddie being a poor man's Springsteen especially working on his own stuff and the new Soundgarden album, listening to CC's vocals and thinking how Chris was as a front man vs how Ed is.  Like most on here, I'm a huge fan, I've been lucky enough to go to a ton of their shows but fatherhood and growing up in general has changed Ed a bit, he's embraced his status which I don't fault him for one bit but I can see how fans and even bandmates feelings are affected.

It's amazing how they play 2.5-3hr shows changing the setlist each night then cutting it down a bit and now we know why but one could argue that if Ed simply did less talking that would reduce the length of the show.  This past year I've been lucky enough to see Jack White, QOTSA and NIN, all 3 had very little talking/banter or storytelling and just smashed through their amazing sets.  Personally, I think PJ is better than all those bands but the talking about baseball buddies and bringing celebs onstage is sort of lame & unneeded and maybe Matt felt the same way.  It should be about the music not the spectacle that comes with it.

Whatever the case, PJ is still going on which is always a good thing and Matt is continuing on as well with his projects which are awesome so overall though sad, the party continues.
I think you are reaching a lot
Possibly but we'll actually never know
So just make stuff up based on your assumptions ? Weak take imo. Actually one of the worst ones I have read on here. Just my opinion.
99% of the post on the forum are assumptions, you simply don't like mine and that's ok.  If you think that's one of worst, ty, I strive to be the best at whatever I do, appreciate the acknowledgement.  Please, keep having your opinions, they're very enlightening :-)
I think it’s odd that a thread about Matt turned into critiquing of Ed and everything you don’t like about his persona. It’s odd. How about take a break from your post, we got your opinion. I think your take was weak and shared my opinion. Nothing like a fan board where you repeatedly repeat yourself to see if you can be justified. The thread is about Matt. Here’s another take, maybe Matt quit because he was sick of the unappreciated fans who all they do is complain about everything the band does or says. That’s an assumption I’ll admit. Just stay home if u don’t like the chatting between songs. That makes it easy for you. Again just my opinion. I appreciate your perspective though.

My original post was about Matt actually and I'm obviously not the only one who feels the way I do. I'll take a break when you do.   I don't hate the banter, I'd prefer less but I expect it actually, it's comical do me that you know every show it's going to happen especially in Boston when he repeats the same stories.  And I get it, some of those stories are very cool to those who haven't heard them before but if you have heard them before like myself, it's not exciting, it's just an extended bathroom break when the bantering goes into Even Flow or Wreckage. Again just my opinion. I appreciate your perspective though.

Telling people to stay home or not listen when they express their opinion is the shittiest take possible. Disagreeing and stating your opposing opinion is obviously fine.

There was a time when Ed literally wouldn't say a word.  If you were in the audience it was like that scene in Forrest Gump when he's running across the country and he suddently stops and all his runner followers are like, "Be quiet I think he's going to say something..." Haha.

Circling this back to Matt and his comment about show length and face melting 70 minute sets.  As a PJ fan, would you be ok with a 70 min face melting set or their usual 2.5 hr, sometimes 3 hr sets?  I'm undecided because when I think of 70 min face melting sets, it's upbeat bangers which would be insane to hear 70 straight minutes of PJ's heavier stuff, new and old but I think you'd miss out on songs like Present Tense that build into a heavier sound at it's peak but I wouldn't say is a heavier sounding song if that makes sense.  I know some will say they'll be happy with whatever PJ decides to do but it'd be interesting what a 70 min PJ set would actually be without factoring in venue and price which is a different animal altogether.

My face melts every time Mike shreds : ) My question is, does 70 minute facemelter mean little change throughout sets from night to night? Less change in sets provide more opportunity for 'perfection' in each song night after night.  If so, I would prefer longer, looser sets that are different every night. Just me though.

They're too big to play 70 minute sets
I agree - it was more hypothetical

If you don’t like something why would you go? It’s a solution to his many issues. Just stay home and bitch on the internet. I was offering him an option to the talking etc. I wanted to help him. Honest to god.

No way you think telling someone to stay home if they don’t love 100% of what a band does is trying to help. Stop it.

I know, there's a lot of factors to consider but let's play make believe for conversation sake, say Matt never leaves and the band decided we're going to do 70 min facemelters, it'd be interesting because they have so many songs that could work.  You lose some of the slower tempo songs but the trade off would be crazy, high energy shows.  Moot point I guess since it's never going to happen but since Matt mentioned it, I couldn't help think about how insane that type of show would be.

No I won’t. It was an honest response. Stay home if it bothers you so much. It was an opinion plus the thread is about Matt. Let’s keep it focused people. This guy wanted to be heard and got an honest reply. Read it and move on.

I love Ed's storytelling and rambling. He gets a singing break and we get some fun stories that are often specific to the area of the show. I think it makes the shows more unique and personal.

As far as his word choice, he is a songwriter . Words are part of his instrument. I think he even studies the dictionary.

I agree but I suspect that some of that is forced because he doesn't want to be known as an uneducated dumb musician especially when he's talking about politics.
not necessary. Ed hits it out of the park most times he speaks politics.
Your boos mean nothing to me, for I have seen what makes you cheer

He does speak well when discussing politics but there's times I've noticed the fancy vocab feels forced, perhaps that's just me but no biggie, chromatic harp and amalgamation all day baby!
