    It's good everyone is healthy.

Yeah this is the other point that I think we may have been taking for granted

One day we'll get together for a beer - tells me there's definitely some tension there.

Yes, that is how I read it.

I'm sure having to find another drummer at this point in their career came at somewhat of a shock. So it would make sense that they might have been a little stung by it.  Especially when it was basically Matt saying "I just kind of want to do my own thing now". Which again, is well within his right. And it's not like he left them completely in the lurch. He finished a tour/album and gave them ample time to look for someone else. I'm sure they were just a bit blindsided which is understood.

It's a bummer, but when you've had the kind of career Matt (or any of Pearl Jam) has had, you're well within your rights to call your own shots like this.

I find it interesting that he categorizes Pearl Jam's touring as "constantly." Certainly doesn't feel like that as a fan and relative to other bands I follow. But hey if this opens the door to more touring (or at least not a serious downshifting) it potentially works out for everyone.
I was going to mention the constantly touring thing. They have been touring every year, but certainly less than some of their contemporaries like Foo Fighters and Green Day. But I will take PJ wherever and whenever I can get them.

He literally says that it was amicable, as did the band.
PJ wasn’t scratching the creative itch for Matt, he’s done with big tours and long shows.

It’s funny how people here seem to think the band members hang out a ton in their downtime; they do not.
These guys are coworkers with their own family obligations and friends and creative endeavours.

If someone had left where I worked in July, it’s a good bet I haven’t bothered to catch up with them yet either.

Or they've just been busy with their own stuff.

Pearl Jam doesn't hang out much between band stuff to begin with. I remember that being stated in interviews.

  • 3 hour shows should be corrected to 2h20min shows, should it not.

True. He wants to play 70 mins. I'm not sure what kind of gig that would be but I respect his decision.

Also the constant touring! Were they averaging 35 shows a year? There’s not to many working bands that Matt could be a member of that tours less then PJ does

I only dabble at playing the drums, but of all the positions in the band, drumming would be the most brutal on your body. I wouldn't want to play 3 hour shows behind a kit.
1991- Hollywood Palladium, California with Temple of the Dog, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains -RIP Magazine Show Oct. 6th
    1992- Lollapalooza, Irvine, California
    Nothing since then. I suck.
2016- Fenway Park, Boston - Both glorious nights
    2022- Oakland Night 2

I don't think its the number of shows but the fact that they have played shows every year since end of covid.  Ed has specifically said they need to play shows every year to pay for their expenses with the staff and office.  So I think that comment is more that you have to be on call for PJ which makes it much more difficult to do some of the things he wants to do.

Obviously Matt has earned the right to do what he wants and appreciate what he’s done for the band - that being said I think it’s completely fine for us fans to feel kinda sour after reading this.

PJ hasn’t played a 3 hour show since 2018 and tour way less than their contemporaries. What headline acts are playing 70 min shows? If you just want to sing/play guitar and focus on your side projects Matt, then just come out and say it.

its very funny how Jeff got a lot of (undeserved) hate for not wanting to tour but now we clearly see who the problem was. I get Matt is 62 but it’s not like his band mates are decades younger, truthfully how many years left did he think PJ has anyway? I don’t see the point in stepping away now after their best record since Avocado and easily Matt’s best drumming album.

im glad Matt is happier now and im also glad the band can rid of someone who was a thorn in their side for the last few years. I understand Matt was very vocal about Taylor Hawkins but for him to sort of insinuate in this article it was a similar situation for him is wild. Anyway here’s to hoping Dave K or Jack get the nod soon and we can focus on some longer PJ shows now

The article says he's writing original music with his Wipers tribute band and he wants to take that and/or Third Secret on the road. I could see either one banging out 70 minutes in a club with an opener or two in tow.

It's a little jarring how (in a couple of different ways) he doesn't seem to view Pearl Jam as his creative project. In some ways I get his point and in other ways I found it surprising and it kinda bums me out.

I was actually thinking about Matt this morning before reading this article, and how I think Soundgarden was his band, and Pearl Jam was his job. It paid the bills, but didn't have his heart like Soundgarden did. I wasn't surprised at all about what he said about not wanting to play the long shows, I had suspected a lot of that came from him. I will always love the dude and wish him all the best. A fantastic drummer who I was lucky to see perform time and time again.

Constant touring was the part that made me pause for thought

perhaps it wasnt the best choice of words.

Maybe we get a drummer now who can turn in 3 hour shows again.......Now thats something we can get excited about

Good luck for whatever he wants to do. I am looking forward to the return of constant touring and 3-hour shows!
