Pearl Jam doesn't need 3 hour shows.
They need a drummer who kindly demands "let's skip Evenflow and Porch every other show"
"Mostly I think that people react sensitively because they know you’ve got a point"

Seems like what we all figured is true - those longer shows took their toll, understandably. And cutting back to 2:10-2:25 was to help accommodate.

I definitely sensed a little tension too from reading that. First thing that came to mind was the other guys going “ugh we just released an album that’s rejuvenated a ton of interest and now we have to find a new drummer”. Talked to Jeff and Stone a bit but not Mike and Eddie. I’m reading too much into it but that’s interesting.

    Ultimately, I’m just gossiping.

I can picture Matt and Jeff having their own personal Slack-channel titled "Pearl Jam members who want to tour less"
"Mostly I think that people react sensitively because they know you’ve got a point"
  • I wouldn't think any of them want to do 3hr shows. The audience can't seem to last the 2.20 hrs without asshats puking and falling around drunk.

if you've ever been in a band, especially at that age, not speaking to some or all of your band members when you aren't working together is nothing to read into. It's very normal for some of them to be your coworkers and not a group of super close knit brothers.
Your boos mean nothing to me, for I have seen what makes you cheer

The concerts being shortened to help Matt and Eddie out has already been said in interviews.

Them not hanging overly much privately has also been said in interviews.

Don’t have sources. But not weird in any way, them not having met since he left. I doubt all Pearl Jam members have met.

Not a direct reply, just musing to the board.

They've been practicing here & there (Seattle & California), I'm not sure who's been behind the kit (but some DO know). My heart says Dave K. but could be anyone.

Jeff doesn't mind going to Seattle from Montana. Stone & Mike live there. Vedders have a house there. Dave K.'s been up to Seattle a bunch lately.

In reverse, Dave lives in Cali. Ed has a house in SoCal. Jeff was down there for the skateboard gallery thing. And Stone (Iggy's record) & Mike (Ozzy) are friendly with Watt who's based in Cali.

They're not "tour rehearsing" but Ed did tell a friend at the Neil Young show he was at that they were practicing. Practicing = new drummer.

I don't see a tour in '26, but definitely an announcement & a festival show of some sort. Just my guess. Regardless of who's the drummer.

I know they don't hang out as much off the clock, but we're in territory we havent been in since 1998. And I think its totally fine for Matt to be spending time in his solo & SG circles. I have a whole paper on that that I'll share at another time😅

But they're good. They're not fighting like Mick Mars & Nikki Sixx.

There are things on the horizon, but the land is flat. 3 hrs shows on the regular aren't happening anymore. Maybe once in a while, but the format of the last 3 tours is the new norm. Not just for Matt then, but for Ed now (and dare I say Stone).

I could see some more back to back nights happening, but thats about it. They're gonna go til the wheels fall off. Right now, they're keeping up on maintenance.

We'll go for another ride soon enough 🤘

Well, for what it's worth, I just saw a post of Ed at a Neil Young show last night or so, and he said they are practising and will be back on the road soon enough. So there's that.

I think Matt leaving gives more Creedence to those rumors of them recording some stuff in Australia. Knowing he was leaving soon - let’s get whatever we have down. One last session with Matt to record demos, etc.

70 minute set? He couldn't have just said an hour?

He even uses weird time signatures in his speech.

    It's good everyone is healthy.

    Exactly

It seems he was able to leave on his terms too.

    Good for MC!

And people thought he was joining Foo Fighters who have triple the amount of shows Pearl Jam do. Also why do people have to find the negative?

Just saw Blink 182 the other night headline sea hear now and they played for one hour and 15 minutes (five more than what Matt wants) with a lot of chatter in between songs.  The energy was definitely there but I wanted more songs for sure.

One day we'll get together for a beer - tells me there's definitely some tension there.
Yes, that is how I read it.
He literally says that it was amicable, as did the band.
PJ wasn’t scratching the creative itch for Matt, he’s done with big tours and long shows.

It’s funny how people here seem to think the band members hang out a ton in their downtime; they do not.
These guys are coworkers with their own family obligations and friends and creative endeavours.

If someone had left where I worked in July, it’s a good bet I haven’t bothered to catch up with them yet either.
That’s true. But when you’re a coworker for 27 years, you’ve probably created a deep bond. I haven’t been working that long yet, but when my dad retired, it was a big deal to the people who were with him the majority of the time.
Then you add that they were friends before coworkers, and their experience as coworkers is vastly different from ours which would naturally create a tighter bond (I would assume), it is quite different.
Not that I expect them to be hanging out every weekend. But I would fully expect them to be in each others lives, unlike my workers that left over the summer too.

I'm sure he is at a point where he and his kids/grandkids are set for life financially.  He can get away playing 70 minute sets and charging $25-30 a ticket.  As Ed has stated before, PJ is a large corporation with lots of mouths to feed. They need to play more shows/longer shows to justify how much they are charging. He likely decided he didn't want to or need to do that anymore.

Happy for Matt. Glad he’s doing what he wants. I would not expect longer shows going forward, but hopefully we’ll find out in 2026.
