Respectfully, this would be the easiest transition and prob get them touring again sooner rather than later.

maybe but is he good enough as a drummer?  since he doesn't drum full time i can't see him being enough to power this band at this stage of their careers and musicianship.  whoever it is will have be a top flight drummer.

I'm sad, I wish it wasn't so, but glad that he gave what he did to us fans and the band. Thankful to have attended his last two shows with the band this year.

Richard has my vote. He's gonna need a new job when Howard retires soon. Seems like Josh would be most likely to take over. I think he started as a drummer and moved to lead guitar when John quit the chili peppers. Josh was the drummer on 8 John Frusciante solo albums between 2004-2008 and has played live shows with frusciante/flea/others as the drummer.

He wasn't a great guitarist when he took over for John but learned their catalogue pretty quickly and did a solid job keeping them going through those years. I imagine he is a good enough musician that he could learn to play all the PJ songs he doesn't know well with a little practice.

Maybe the plan was to move josh into that role all along. I can’t imagine being on the road and being away from your family for that many years. Can’t help but feel he’s earned to do whatever he pleases at this point and that many years at the helm with PJ is pretty amazing.

I assumed during the covid era that they added Josh and he would learn a bare bones setlist on drums, bass, and guitar.  I guess that didn't happen, but it did make sense.

I'm still trying to believe this news. I was shocked when I read the email after waking up this morning. I remember being so happy when I heard that my favourite drummer had joined Pearl Jam 27 years ago. Now it feels strange. I don't know if I'm weak or old, but I'm a man and I'm crying.

Could not believe it when I heard it, but wish him all the best and hope to see him out playing again. PJ will never be the same, but hoping they stick with it for a while longer!! There is no other band like them. Guess when Ed said in Nashville I am not sure when we will get to do this again, something was brewing.Thought it was an odd comment.
    Thank you Matt Cameron!

Respectfully, I’d rather the whole band retire than to see this nightmare scenario happening.

Same. It was admirable how he filled in when they needed him, but those boots are borderline unlistenable for me. He just doesn’t have the chops for a band of this level.

I'd imagine if this was premeditated for a while...
    - Josh remains support no differently than Boom
    - They worked together on how to appropriately give fans the Dark Matter shows after Gigaton was dampened by the pandemic
    - With shows over, this gives the band time to rest, recharge, and in some ways reset

The guy is at retirement age, if he wants to leave, that's in his right. That's all im saying.
This just kind of shook me. The last thing I'd think of when looking at MFC is "senior citizen," but by age he can be classified as such.

The passage of time just doesn't make sense sometimes.

Given we are talking about a band firmly entrenched in the music industry with countless friends and contacts I am sure they will have a lot of options to consider. I am sure there are drummers out there we have never heard of who could fit the bill.

I saw Brad Wilk mentioned a few times, that is something I could absolutely get on board with. That would be phenomenal. However whoever it is that fills the seat will be the right choice - these guys know exactly what they need and who can do the job.

    Long may they continue.

I don’t think Brad Wilk would get it. In the PJ20 book they talked about trying out Wilk after Dave A’s departure but his playing didn’t gel with Jeff. Granted that was 30 plus years ago so who knows.

If they do decide to replace with a permanent member Krusen would be a full circle choice. I’d love either Jack or Abbruzzese, but can’t see either happening, but stranger things have happened (Oasis reunion, Zak Starkey being retired, heck Matt Cameron retiring…). Not feeling a young replacement is the way to go but that’s just me.

Probably they should have learned by now the band is destined always to be a 4 piece so if they just go with a touring and studio drummer, Matt Chamberlain makes sense. You could make a case for a bunch of other names too, but if that’s the option they go with I’ll be interested but less invested in seeing who they choose.

Wow crazy news.  Like so many others have posted these guys only have a certain amount of quality time left in this business.  Since Soundgarden has the rights to the remaining music he is probably going to support his former bandmates and Chris’s amazing legacy.  Matt is a class act!
