This may be a lit long for some (I found it worth every minute), and it may have already been posted somewhere here, but this interview between Jon Steward and Heather Cox Richardson is great. I found it hugely helpful. I would venture most everyone here with an open mind and willingness to listen would find it useful as well.
I hate to say it but we’re not going to survive the four years of POOTWH being COOTWH with what they’re intending to implement. And given the cult and the total saturation of their “news” sources, there’s no breaking through that haze. Good freaking luck.
Nice. They’re killing the fish. They’re killing the birds. They’re killing the whales that live there. Nothing like killing a complete industry, because? Hmmmmmm, I wonder if there’s another marker to put down?

Great post glad I watched it but I’m not an optimist I’m a pessimist and believe that now that he has total control & power he will trample any sort of resistance against him like they do in China or Turkey or Russia by brutal force! so two major red flags 1- Dismantling of independent news outlets 2- jailing of journalists and political enemies those are the things folks should be looking for!
I hate to say this, because I don't like to see people suffer, but I think this has to happen. It's like how sometimes an addict has to hit bottom and then sink or swim.
I think this is exactly spot on. America as a country decided. We deserve what we get.
I agree, though it's hugely unfortunate that we will all pay the price of electing a hateful dictator. The blowback will be harsh. All but the most wealthy will feel the pinch. People are going to struggle. The question is, will voters who allowed this to happen learn from it? Will they learn to fact check and think critically? Or will they remain ignorant and prone to believing lies? We shall see.
The tragic part is that Harris’ economic policies would have benefited the majority of MAGA more than they would have ever benefited me directly. But I try to look out for others that are less fortunate and understand that a rising tide lifts all boats. But now I’m going to turn inward, protect myself and those that I care about from the damage that is about to come. I’ll be fine, I can ride out the pain and unfortunately it will be MAGA that suffers the most. I hope it was worth “owning the libs”, you know those people that were looking out for you whether you knew it or not.
Agreed, bootleg. Sadly, I must add that the others who will hurt the most will be migrants and LGBTQ+ folks.
And what will suffer most of all, for a time, will be the planet. But the planet is also the strongest. I remember when COVID first hit and people were sheltering in place all over the world. Wildlife flourish in a very short period of time. The air got cleaner everywhere. Nature bats last. But now, with the Felon in charge, the planet will suffer quite a bit for some time and the impact will be great, especially on mammals (I assume everyone here knows humans are mammals). There will be a great need to clean up the mess after these next four years in order to, hopefully, repair some of the damage.
Yeah the worst part is that his victory gives him credence. Just like his first term, it's ok to openly insult LGBTQ+, talk down to women (all women reporters are "nasty" "low IQ", etc) he'll call all immigrants criminals, etc. And it will all be ok because he won.

I'm more worried that the dismantling is naturally occurring with news outlets. People just don't give a shit.
I was always big on news. When I graduated from college in 1991 my city had two newspapers...the Star in the morning and the Press in the afternoon. Now US News/Gannett pretty much runs everything.
I still subscribe to the Indianapolis Star and the New York Times. I cancelled the Washington Post after they refused to endorse Harris because fuck that. If the rich guy that owns you can make a decision like that I'm not giving them any more money even though that's probably a bad reaction.

Having to listen to these republican assholes talk about how great trump is is very painful to me. They all know that the best way to deal with trump is to flatter him. So fucking pathetic.
Remember how trump made democrat governors, etc., go on and on about his greatness in order for him to release disaster funds, etc?
Christ it is so fucked up...and it's just getting started. It's going to be a real shit show.

I am also mad at the rich dude for that wapo issue, but realistically endorsements mean zero, nada, nothing. Our candidate made a few critical errors, that should be our focus.
That rich dude has built the best delivery and logistics company in the history of earth, far better than everyone else, including the post office and fedex. There is just no replacing prime imo, especially for us with mobility issues (mine hopefully temporary)

Yeah my protest would probably be better by cancelling Amazon but I can't do that
It just bothers me that Bezos basically accepts trump's flaws and bowed down to him. Likely because he felt like federal funding to his space program would be affected.

And he gets to squash all the investigations against him! He will basically erase all evidence of his past bad behavior and there’s nothing that anyone can do about it!
But thats what his supporters want. Consequence free for people they like, all the consequences for the people they don't. Law is malleable and conditional.

A president not being able to be charged for things he did that that was done officially as President I can in theory understand though. But then there should be checks and balances for what the President can and cannot do.

Not everything a president does is official business. There are many things that a president does that are not official and theoretically would be held accountable. If that weren't the law, we'd have crimes against pretty much every president in my lifetime.

I agree guys, it's very difficult to be hopeful right now, but there are
huge numbers of us who do not want to live under autocratic rule. Right now, the resistance to autocracy movement is fatigued and feeling downtrodden. But it's not dead. I think those of many, many us who prefer democracy to authoritarian rule will do well to step back, assess, refresh. Resistance will never die.
One of the things I found hopeful was that one of them mentioned the idea that the Felon may make enough of a mess of his second term such that it may unravel. Let's face it, he is not the most brilliant dictator we have seen throughout history.
The other thing I found hopeful was how Heather Cox Richardson came across in this interview. She has worked tirelessly for months (honestly, I don't know how she did it), but she looks and sounds great as ever. She seems to possess a great deal of poise and stoicism without losing her drive and commitment. I find her character and strength to be highly inspiring and uplifting. She is a national treasure. Same with Jon Stewart. He is one of our best and brightest as well.

What is encouraging to me (even though it killed Harris' campaign) is that there is a large group of voters that really aren't beholden to either party. If trump doesn't deliver then they could be back. It's due to low information but the left will need to benefit from it as well if they ever want to win an election again.

I predict the dems will win in 2028 or 2032. Look back at the last 100 years, it's uncommon for a party to win more than 3 election terms in a row, there is a lot of back and forth. It's not over for anyone. And the country is more evenly split that what we always hear. I keep hearing trump won in a "landslide." But it depends how you define landslide. If you look at just electoral votes, it does look pretty lopsided. But if you look at the popular vote, he won by 2.5%. Thats hardly a landslide. And when you considered the lopsided electoral outcome and really most of that were the result of swing states by just 2-3%, it really was a close election. They don't need any major changes. Just distance themselves from th extreme (as both sides should) and put up a better candidate who went through the entire process next time.
With the way the votes have been rolling it. I wouldn't consider it a landslide. They kept saying it would be close and thats what it is. Its looking like 2% lead in the popular vote.

so two major red flags
1- Dismantling of independent news outlets
2- jailing of journalists and political enemies
those are the things folks should be looking for!

If the US would be a latin american country in a 70s Bond-film Trump would be rolling in with his tanks to never have an election.
And even if that ”can’t happen” in the US, you are a far bit closer to it happening than in let’s say Denmark
Remember how trump made democrat governors, etc., go on and on about his greatness in order for him to release disaster funds, etc?
Christ it is so fucked up...and it's just getting started. It's going to be a real shit show.

That rich dude has built the best delivery and logistics company in the history of earth, far better than everyone else, including the post office and fedex. There is just no replacing prime imo, especially for us with mobility issues (mine hopefully temporary)
It just bothers me that Bezos basically accepts trump's flaws and bowed down to him. Likely because he felt like federal funding to his space program would be affected.
