Regardless of the why, the what around touring is what it is. You gotta find other bands. If your happiness is tied too closely to one or a small number of artists and their output, it's a much tougher ride.
I didn’t see PJ in ‘23 (had lawn for Indy) but I did get rail for the Menzingers twice, watch Gaslight Anthem & Oso Oso play an apple orchard, see Pixies & Modest Mouse at a brewery, listen to Mike Doughty in a bar, observe Springsteen from the nosebleeds and catch The Hold Steady & Dino Jr co-headline a club show. There’s always some cool band to see. Wish it was PJ more often but ya make the best of it.
My ‘24 schedule already has Bruce again, Social D, Bad Religion & Jeff Rosenstock, with hopefully a couple PJ shows too.

I'm literally hunched over with a lower back/hip issue this morning, so full understanding of the age issue.
Just saw this... & can relate, obviously.

I'm legit surprised at how dismissive people are of age potentially being an issue at this point... I can't help but think some are in for some pretty rude awakenings down the road.

Just accept the fact that as a collective band, they tour as much as they want to. They need 5 guys to agree. I don't think it's a situation where one guy is calling the shots like the Foos or DMB (not to say that the Dave's don't take input from the others, but in the end, they are making the decisions).

Total speculation, but I think with PJ, it appears that Mike and Matt really enjoy getting out and playing. As someone else said, Jeff has been on record saying he doesn't love going out on tour. Ed and Stone are probably somewhere in the middle. But in the end, all 5 guys need to be in agreement. And that's what we're getting with the tours the last 10 years or so. And ballpark shows will make them the most money in the shortest amount of time.
I think you are exactly right.   They slowed down considerably after 2003 and figured out what works for them.  100% not an age issue as it started when they were in their late 30’s and early 40’s.

I don’t have any beef with how they operate.   I should cut them some slack when I do get annoyed reading comments about how tough touring is.  I don’t know their home situation and what pressure it may put on their family.

Without even looking it up, I am going to guess the slowdown in touring coincided with the increase in children.

And now that we are 20 years beyond 2003, kids no longer at home.

I also think PJ has a certain quality that they want to put out and the passion and emotional and physical energy they give is off the charts. Ed really sounded great last year and Mike is a beast on that stage. He runs like the energizer bunny while I'm tired just watching him from the stands. Maybe they need the breaks between shows and cities to continue to put the product they want to give us on that stage every night.

I literally typed my last message at the doctor's office waiting to see if I had arthritis in my right hand/wrist (and only 42 years old).  That said,  the number of shows played in 2023 would be no surprise to me 15 years ago.  One good thing is that rather than doing two large tours with two years off in between (like 2000 through 2003), we get shows every year.

I honestly think there's probably a slew of reasons behind why they don't tour like they used to... yeah, I think age is one of them, but probably not the only one... I'm a big fan of the saying "we don't know what we don't know" and I think that applies here.

I also think based on some comments that a lot of people don't realize just how physically taxing it is to play an instrument at such an intense level... does it equate to putting a roof on a house day in & day out? Hell no, but that doesn't mean it doesn't take a toll on your body. (& not for nothing, I hate traveling for work and thankfully haven't had to for several years... I can relate to the notion of wanting to sleep in your own bed every night)

I don't have the answers more than anyone else, but having said that... I see what I believe to be the writing on the wall with this band, and am going to take what I can until I can't anymore.

The old days aren't coming back anytime soon, and probably not ever... best to adapt accordingly if we can.

Gotta be a big show if there is a press conference. I don’t recall there being a press conference for Foo Fighters or Chris Stapleton, for example. So it’s either PJ, or AC/DC, or . . . I’m out of ideas who else would require a press conference. Maybe Paul McCartney or Taylor Swift would be big enough for a press conference?

People can laugh but Billy Joel has been known to do press conferences for stadium shows.

Not sure I can even go even if the rumored dates end up being correct, but went ahead and booked a refundable room walking distance to Climate Pledge for Seattle 2.

Take it for what it is worth... I've been told by people in the know for the St. Louis Busch Stadium announcement that it is not PJ.   Sooo, I'm either getting messed with or it's really not PJ.   I'm back to thinking it's AC/DC or Billy Joel in St. Louis.   Still weird Joe Buck is making the announcement.

The Cardinals are announcing a stadium show tomorrow where Joe Buck is making the announcement... Odds of St. Louis getting a stadium show?   Seems real odd Buck ( whom I'v bumped into at PJ shows ) is making the announcement.

I'm gonna be 60 this year and I'm a physical therapist, I can still do GA although standing still in a crowd makes my leg go numb.  Moving around abd dancing in GA is fine... I don't hear the band whining about it being too hard physically

I recall Kelly Curtis saying over ten years ago  that Pearl Jam has never been nor will they ever be a band that goes out for a year doing 125 shows. I never understood that comment to this day.
Would you want them to be a band that plays 100 shows every 4 or so years, or a smaller amount MOST every year?

Thanks.  Like I said... It's odd they are having Buck do it in a press conference.  He's not even part of the organization.  They called for the press conference right before I posted that.  They are also treating all the sports/entertainment writers to lunch that attend.   AC/DC / Billy Joel / BRUUUCCCE are the active guesses.
