The number of songs doesn't matter. 2 hrs & 44 mins is solid. The overall number last night can be attributed to the actual song lengths. Rounded these up & down +/- a few seconds for easy math:
    • DOTC = 4:30
    • Who Ever Said = 5:15
    • Seven O'Clock = 6:15
    • Retrograde = 5:15
    • Quick Escape = 4:45
    • River Cross = 6:00
That's 32 minutes right there, without banter. 35-ish with banter.
Factor in Even Flow, Daughter/In My Tree tag (or any tag), Better Man/Save It For Later, that's about 28 mins. So, we're past an hour with those alone.
I've never sat down to do the math, but the avg. PJ song seems to be around the 3:30-3:45 range. If they want to do longer songs & let them breathe, that's their prerogative. But I think the number of songs will be different with every show, just like the setlist itself.
If they want to bust out Lukin, Whipping, Sometimes, Brain of J, Wasted Reprise, and Animal, and break 30 songs again? Great! But your best bet is to just try & enjoy the show.

Hopefully they will limit it down to 15-18 songs per show. For us doing alot of shows per tour, those long shows are bad for the PJ after party sex orgies. We are getting old, we need to wrap it early. Let's hope they play one hour to 75 minutes per night tops. Like Iron Maiden

    35% Gigaton.   Wow.

I am ok with that, it is the 26% Ten that is getting old for me. I am sure it was a great night no matter what and the reverse mamason is awesome. Instead of death, we are alive.
This is the real issue imo. The new songs sounded great, and they‘ll slowly figure out how to use them in sets, but it’s too much ten for that short of a set. I’m interested to see if that’s just the San Diego connection to all those tunes or if that’s how it’ll be moving forward.

My favorite shows and bootlegs are the tours for No Code and Yield.

Sets were 22-25 songs per night.  Nobody complained.   I’ve never ever cared about how long a PJ show was.

For only having 5 albums those sets were quite varied. They didn’t play alive, daughter, small town, better man, porch etc. every show like they do now. So yes, I would take those sets today too. I think that is really the major complaint not the length. Song selection.

8 new songs. Totally understandable it’s the album tour.

Everything but Footsteps, amongst the waves, oceans and long road are standard songs on most set lists. Fans are use to seeing tons of rarities. I think that’s the issue.

2:45 is plenty long, just think last night's set list was just OK. I expect them to mix it up as the tour progresses.

It’s only one show. BUT I do hope it is not a trend to play most of Gigaton, the hits and then sprinkle a couple different songs around each night. I have a feeling this is what it’s going to look like. I get it but don’t love it. I don’t ever need to hear Jeremy, betterman, etc especially in the same show. Hope they throw a lot more yield and no code in throughout the tour

23 songs. 35% Gigaton. Not much unexpected on the set. I'm gonna have to side with the disappointed camp on this one.
Granted, it's still early and we'll have to see how things proceed. But if this is the new norm, I'm gonna be really disappointed that I cancelled my other vacation plans just to keep OKC on my itinerary. And I'll probably scratch Louisville, since it seems like I'll already be getting a festival set at every other show.

Were there a lot of empty seats last night? Looking at some videos and I see a good amount of red seats.
It filled up once the boys hit the stage. I will note that the pit looked lame last night. People left before the show even ended.

Pit seemed full but maybe not a ton of energy.  I wasn't in it, so maybe my opinion isnt worth much, but looked very tame.  Crowd in general was tame, with a huge number of empty seats during the encore (typical for San Diego crowds in general IMO, trying to "beat traffic").  House lights were on during Alive and seas of people leaving while Mike is ripping the solo to that song - that was sad to see.

There was plenty of room in the back. If you got there at 7:15 or so you could have got a great spot up really close. 2nd or 3rd row equivalent either side of center

It was a greatest hits show and the new stuff. They happen and that is why we go to multiple shows. It is only the first show and its easy to be an armchair quarterback.

I bet the LA shows will be much different especially since they just did those Ohana shows last fall.  It'll be interesting to compare the Ohana shows to the LA shows once the weekend is over.

Just FYI, EV also said there was a 15-minute delay due to a traffic jam. Get your asses in your seat and the rest of the shows will hopefully start at 8:30pm. They seemed super-stoked to be back and lots of stories for his mom, family, Bill Walton and his local SD hangs. 1 down, 8 to go. Off to Los Angeles.

I don't get the whole 15 minute delay due to traffic comment. Ed did a song exactly at 7:30, followed by Plural One starting at 7:34.

Did the other members of the band just hop in their cars and drive to the venue right before the show started?

I took an Uber from Gas Lamp district around 6pm and was in the venue at 6:45 (after grabbing some merch from one of the tents)
