Cool. You can start a thread. That has nothing to do with cancel culture. You asked what public opinion there was against dr suess since you haven’t seen Antifa or or whatever protest it. I gave you one example. There’s dozens more if you want to look. Not sure what flat earth has to do with that. I’m guessing that is your shocked response to not having heard anything about this since it’s been a topic for several years?

You believe in “cancel culture.” I don’t. Since you seem to be so up on Dr. Seuss and the public opinion against him and the 6 “cancelled” Seuss books, how about linking to your sources that make you a bettor? Was Cat in the Hat Black?

And how did you come to that conclusion? I dont believe I’ve even used the words “cancel culture” in this thread. Here are my posts, from what I can remember.
I disagreed with a meme comparing trump supporters to isis.
I said the majority of republicans or Trump voters (I forget the exact language) do not support the 1/6 Capitol riot. I was told I was wrong, that most are racist and want an armed insurrection, but I didn’t feel like arguing such a point. I asked what was the point of renaming Mr Potato head. If you can still dress them in male and female stereotypes I don’t see the point in the rebrand. I was told there is still a mr and Mrs, just the brand name or something was changing. I said if that is what all the uproar and fuss is over then that is stupid and not a big deal. Sort of the opposite of crying cancel culture there.
Someone said To Kill a Mockingbord is next on the chopping block. I asked why, the protagonist puts his family at risk to expose racism. Didn’t get a response. Then when it came to Dr Suess I said I don’t understand why the zoo one is being discontinued. They didn’t even look like people to me.
Then finally responded to a comment about Suess’ estate being the one to cancel them. I never claimed to be up on Dr Suess. It’s not a secret society that has complained about him before. I gave you the name of a book, didn’t realize you expect me to google a link for you. https://www.amazon.com/Was-Cat-Hat-Black-Literature/dp/019063507X
None of what you said has anything to do with my comment of I bet there was probably some outside influence in that decision. I bit anyway.
Last I checked though, Amazon didn’t ban those books, the Seuss estate decided to stop publishing them, which is their right.
If Nirvana, or Geffen or whomever owns the rights to In Utero decided to pull “Rape Me” from streaming services & remove it from future copies of the album, wouldn’t that be their prerogative? You could argue over whether or not Cobain would agree with it, but those who own the rights can do what they want.
Ironically enough, there’s a case to be made that Geisel would have been in favor of modifying the 6 books, as he had done before (see one of my previous posts), but since he’s passed, you can’t really go changing it now.
I would bet that there was a lot of outside influence and pressure, that the decision wasn’t made by the estate alone.
This is what you said. “I would bet there was a lot of outside influence and pressure.......” I dispute that. You mentioned one book published in 2017. I guess that equates to “a lot of outside influence and pressure?” Four years later? Because you “would bet” doesn’t make it a certainty. Just like my belief that the world is flat doesn’t make it so.

Again, that’s just my opinion. Are we not allowed to share opinions here? The adult response would be to just disagree and claim you see no reason to support that. Instead you compare it to claiming the earth is flat, and ask for a source, I give one and it doesn’t fit your criteria. Just disagree dude, it’s not a big deal.
It’s entirely possible the Seuss estate bowed to outside pressure to discontinue those books or take some other action, but if this is the case, I haven’t seen anyone reporting on it. (Tried searching too... can’t say there’s nothing out there, but I didn’t find anything notable).
We know for a fact criticism of his work exists & in some cases rightfully so. The Seuss estate not only heard these criticisms, but also EXPLORED them. The statement explaining their decision acknowledged as much:
“Dr. Seuss Enterprises listened and took feedback from our audiences including teachers, academics, and specialists in the field as part of our review process. We then worked with a panel of experts, including educators, to review our catalog of titles”
“Dr. Seuss Enterprises says they are being pulled because the “books portray people in ways that are hurtful and wrong.””
We also know Seuss personally changed at least one of his works in the ‘80s in the interest of racial sensitivity, and was known to be a civil rights advocate in his later years. The artist himself showed the ability to evolve, why shouldn't his estate follow suit?
Something else I came across: according to Forbes, Seuss’ estate grossed $33M in 2020, up from $9.5M only 5 years prior... hardly a company struggling w/ public perception... hardly a company in a position to be privately pressured into doing something they didn't want to do.
So yeah, it's not impossible that this decision was made in response to pressure the public isn't privy to; but It's more realistic to me that Seuss Enterprises after exploring the aforementioned criticisms and in keeping with the progressive & evolved views of Theodor Geisel came to the simple conclusion that these 6 books didn't need to be republished. (or was the preferred option over modifying the works of a deceased man)
If they had ceased publication of the 6 titles without making any kind of an announcement or making any sort of explanation, would anyone, particularly the outrage, white grievance machine that is Faux News, have noticed? I bet not.
Maybe Matt Getts Off and his ilk can rail from the house and senate floors dressed in Seuss character costumes until 2024?

the announcement was tied to his birthday and the decision over the past several years to de-emphasize Suess for Read Across America Day.
& companies like Star Market are still using his birthday as an opportunity to promote the brand... I wasn’t going to comment anymore on this topic, but at the supermarket this morning I came across the following display which inspired my last post... for a company that Fox News wants you to believe has been cancelled by society, Dr Seuss seems to be doing ok.

Wal Mart labeled the song "Waif me".
In a similar vein, Nirvana has an In Utero-era B-side on a soundtrack called The Beavis and Butthead Experience entitled "I Hate Myself and Want To Die." On the Walmart version of the soundtrack, it was titled "I Love Myself and Want To Hug You."
Frank Zappa didn’t die for this!!!
It's just words.
I value words.
I was quoting Zappa. He was debating w some politicians and that is what he very calmly replied to them. "It's just words".
Sigh........Apparently the young generation are now targeting Eminem because of all of his past work....
Proud that my kids object to this. Raised them right!
It’s all my 13yo nephew listens to.
I think Eminem is going to be ok.
This is like Farenheight 451 type stuff.
If we want to witch hunt everything from the past instead of learn from it then there won't be anything left. Hell MTV could be cancelled for their views years ago.
After having read a bit on Monsieur LePew, I can completely see the issue. That said, I grew up watching Pepe do his thing, and can say I was more affected by actual events in my life at that age than I was by him.

well, as an impressionable young boy, he made it seem appropriate to act like that. which clearly it wasn't.
i am not saying all boys model themselves off of cartoon characters, but when we imitate the 3 stooges, anything can have an influence.
looking back at pepe now, it is hard to believe that they got away with making that. i guess the times were different, but that is no excuse. that poor woman skunk said no to him 1000 times and he kept pursuing her.

i saw on twitter that Pepe Le Pew got canceled from the new space jam movie. it is probably about time.
last night I saw that they were trying to get "Rape Skunk" trending.
Hahahaha!.. He was always overly aggressive. It IS a cartoon though.
I saw that and Speedy Gonzales too. Seems a bit silly to me. But does anyone under 30 even know who they are? My little kids certainly would have no idea who either are. I have a feeling we're going to look back on these in 20 years like how people tried to blame metal groups in the 80s and 90s for violence. Pretty sure no kid ever grew up to be a rapist because of some cartoon skunk. Those cartoons of that era are all full of overdone violence. Its a silly cartoon, I think even little kids understand that. Or do we not let kids see Elmer Fudd now because he always walks around with a loaded shotgun?
