Dumb questions from a guy (me) who has worked with kids, help raise nephew who were past infancy, but never had kids of my own: Why is there so much widespread need for baby formula? Is breast feeding that uncommon today?
My wife had to stop taking her arthritis medication to breast feed. So she did it for a few weeks before getting back on and switching to the bottle.
My brother and his wife adopted 2 girls from infancy, took them home from the hospital when they were days old. They long-term fostered others as well. She obviously was unable to breast feed. There are lots of reasons why. There’s some a stigma unfortunately, I’ve overheard parents at parks criticizing formula, almost like it’s due to laziness or something. But there’s lots of valid reasons why.
I hope no one read any attempt or intention on my part to stigmatize women for feeding their babies formula. That is not the case at all.
“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man [or woman] who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.”
Breastfeeding is an important intervention not just for the health of the baby but also the mother as well. Unfortunately, breasfeeding rates in the USA are lower than almost all other high-income countries, probably due to the completely inadequate maternity leave provisions for most jobs, often requiring women to return to work by the time the baby is 6 weeks old. There are other reasons as well, including lack of widespread support for breastfeeding, but that's probably the major one.
One thing to remember about the formula shortage, though, it that it isn't just a shortage of regular formula for healthy term infants, it also includes shortages of a wide range of specialty formulas for infants and young children with various medical conditions that require specialized diets. Often these formulas need to be given beyond infancy into the toddler and preschooler years because the child can't absorb nutrients from other foods, and in many cases would not have been able to absorb nutrients from breastmilk either.
Very helpful/ informative response, thank you!

We are totally screwed for the mid terms - no doubt we lose the house and senate. This won't happen, but the only way to save 2024 is do what Clinton did and admit where things went wrong and come towards the middle. Clinton did an amazing job is damage control and therefore saved 96 for the Dems. It's the crazy far left 5% of our party that is killing us as this is what the press and the right is exploiting (and the majority of Americans are against). We need to get back to the party we were in the middle left and not make everything a fuck Trump issue - he isn't president and wont be again.
What are the crazy far left ideas of the 5% that are so bad that Americans don't agree with?

1) The perception we are soft on crime (see Gascon, Chesa Boudin). It's an election killer. 2) The perception parents should have no say in what is taught in the classroom. It single handedly lost Virginia for us.

1) soft on crime...Jesus are we still here. If you want unaccountable police and no chance at rehabilitation might as well vote for R 2) I'm not sure that anyone even to the left of Ilhan Omar, AOC, Cori Bush is saying or has ever said that. If you are buying that the Far left doesn't want parent's to have a say in education, I would suggest shopping elsewhere.

It’s all the illegal criminals the far left allows to walk through the wide open, unlocked door at the border when they should be closing and locking not only that door but all the doors in our nation’s schools.
Wow, another crazy headline involving Biden's kids today (daughter's journal). He must have really wanted to be President knowing that his kids' issues were going to get plastered all over the news.

Brandon’s daughter’s diary is old news being rehashed as a distraction from the 1/6 Committee hearings. That trashy tabloid article repeated the same supposed entry five times while not shedding any other light or details, while a zillion pop ups repeatedly froze the screen and pictures of the former addict who peddled it taking selfies were featured.
I’m waaaaaay dumber than I was yesterday as a result. Lesson learned. Speaking of Hunter’s laptop, everyone going to tune in for the committee hearings on it around March 2023? Can’t wait.

It doesn't seem like there is much out there saying the diary isn't real. It is a shame it has been publicized but the only reason I mentioned it is because Biden decided to run for president and VP fully aware his kids' issues could become very public. Think about all of the people impacted: kids, kids' spouses, grandkids, etc... Biden either believes the USA needs him or he just cares about himself more than his family.

He's been in public life for 50 years. There was also no other candidate that was going to beat Trump. Warren, Sanders and Harris had no chance.
It only matters because people are buying her diary. If you'd like a list of presidents that had troubled children or family, we could provide quite the list. In other words, who cares.

The fact that the diary has been in the possession of people with questionable motives is enough for me to not take these reports at face value.
If he truly believed he was the only candidate who could beat trump, and ran despite knowing how his family was going to get treated, that tells me he cares more about the country's future than his family. I guess I don't see that as a knock on his character.
Here’s three who, as far as I know, haven’t had issues, been an embarrassment or a problem or a campaign issue:
Amy Carter Chelsea Clinton Sasha & Malia Obama
All families are dysfunctional, just some more so than others.
Yup, these people are public figures so their dirty laundry seems to become public more often than not.
It does make me wonder a bit if politicians and their families have a higher rate of issues with the kids. I could see it based upon the unhealthy working environment...lots of time away...uber focus on the candidate/representative/etc....$$$$. Does the job and environment help lead to issues like this?
To be honest, the issues with Biden's kids are pretty extreme. Trumps kids lack morales. Obama's kids seemed to make it out fine so far...I hope they remain well.
Not sure what's with you Americans, as a Canadian I'm fully aware that our leadership options suck. There is no win. We've got the Liberal party which swung to the left with it's crazy spending. We've got the NDP even further left. Then we've got the conservatives who have swung massively right to try and attract the far right vote. Except less of the Canadian population identifies with far right, so it makes it super hard to win elections when the align themselves with the crazy.
They all suck. It's not like we wouldn't have problems if we'd gone another way.. lol. Libs/NDP, spend until we go broke (but tend to be closer to my social values), then Cons usually cut taxes (and not much spending) until we go broke (and they're social values keep leaning harder to the crazy right.. sigh.
What I wouldn't give for something down the middle.
A political party that is at least somewhat fiscally responsible and at least shares some of my social values.
I know this a Biden thread, but America would also be f'd regardless of who is president right now. Trump got voted out before he really had to deal with the consequences of his own policies. That big economic run up before covid was all done on credit (taxes were cut, but spending wasn't). Then Trump and Biden shared responsibility for all the covid spending. The Fed was doing the massive quantitative easing through both of their presidencies. Plus were seeing all the negative consequences of 30+ years of globalizations.
That's my thoughts. Biden and Trump both suck.. lol. Just like all our leadership options in Canada suck.

There is a chain of custody issue there, no? Like w/ Hunter's laptop?

But is there not a chain of custody issue that casts doubt on the authenticity of the contents of both?
