I'm not putting much stock in a list that has "To Pimp A Butterfly" by Kendrick Lamar over "Born to Run" by Bruce Springsteen. Rolling Stone is out of touch and has been that way for years. This is the same magazine that put the Boston marathon bomber on the cover.
I brought this up on Facebook before the list came out. And said they would take out Vitalogy. The fact that vs wasn't on the 2 previous top 500 lists didn't sit well with me either
Sgt. Pepper's at #24?! I've always said Revolver is Beatles best album and glad they put it above Sgt. Pepper's but #24?! Boy that's low. There are some reaaaally questionable decisions on this one. I more or less agreed with the 2003 and 2012 lists, this is one is by far their worst.

Both are fantastic albums. I think Kendrick's artistry is incredible and I am not even a big hip hop fan. I also love Born to Run. They are so different that it is very subjective to compare and rank them. One of the biggest issues I have with these lists is a refusal to buck what is considered expected norms. For example, I don't consider Sgt. Peppers to even be the best Beatles album. But man, look at comments and people are losing their shit over it not being #1 on this RS list. It's as if many consider it an indisputable truth that Sgt. Peppers is the greatest album of all time. Really? It is so great that nothing has ever come close again? We should not even discuss? Nah, not buying it.

They put him on the cover and called him a monster. It was not a hagiography regardless of how cute some people think he looked in the photo. The whole point of the article was to examine how a seemingly well-adjusted, popular kid could so quickly devolve into an aspiring mass murderer. A lot of people who were critical of that cover photo never read the article (or even the headline that called him a monster). The other funny thing about the criticism of that article (or criticism of the cover, really) is that no one brought up the real journalistic sin, which was assuming Tsarnaev was guilty. At the time of publication, he was merely an accused suspect. All of the information the public had about the case at the time came from law enforcement statements and leaks. I'm not suggesting that Tsarnaev was innocent, but journalistic standards require being careful not to assume guilt. Didn't they learn anything after Richard Jewell?
Having said that, the investigative journalists at Rolling Stone are not responsible for the album rankings, so that article is apropos of nothing with respect to the RS500.
Lots of “traditional” (interpret however you wish) rock albums/artists took a hit here. I believe The Beatles had at least five albums in the top 20 in previous list! Maybe I put too much stock in these types of things before but it feels like history is being rewritten here. Whatever the case, this list is no longer representative of my tastes and experiences with rock music. I guess I just don’t jive with popular culture anymore.

Footsteps? Yeah whoever was involved in this doesn’t know shit. Probably some new 24 yr old who took parts of old list and filled in newer stuff like the Kendrick Lamar and others
Oh, fuck off! (And I don't curse much in online forums!) Who's Next at #77? Led Zeppelin IV at #58? It bothers me that Ten is low - and even more so that Vs and Vitalogy aren't even there but I know I might be a bit biased... but Who’s Next and Zep 4? They gotta both be in the Top 20, no? Top 50?????
I took a quick look, and wasn't too surprised to see it was pretty much a joke. But honestly, when was the last time Rolling Stone was a relevant source of anything music related?
It is entirely possible that we, the (probably) white middle class men that populate the fan board of a rock band, are not the best objective source to determine what is and what isn’t great music. I love the Stones. Does that mean that I’m the person to ask about the musical relevance/legacy of a Taylor Swift or Kendrick Lamar album? Every time a list comes out anywhere that doesn’t completely celebrate PJ, this exact type of thread comes up. That makes sense again, on a PJ fan site. But our disagreement with the rankings doesn’t mean we’re any closer to the truth about what constitutes a “great” album and what does not. Whether you like rap or not, if you don’t understand that sheer influence - let alone quality - that Kendrick Lamar has brought music, then you’re not the best source to decide his relevance on a list of great albums.
