A lot to unpack here... what do you mean by "law and order"? The legal system has never been fair nor equally applied in this country. It is a fact that Black and Brown people are more likely to be stopped by police and arrested for the same offenses whites commit but are never arrested for (from driving without a license, driving drunk, to smoking marihuana, etc). Black people are a minority but make up the majority of the prison population. So, law and order for whom? What do you mean by "order"? As the racial justice activism, and the rise of Democratic Socialism have demonstrated there is a significant part of the population that believes that there is injustice and inequality in nearly all the structures of our society (law, economic, housing, employment). Do you deny the existence of structural inequality?. The second amendment, I have no issue with. I do take issue with people being allowed to buy military grade weapons and carry them in public. I assure you though, the moment more of us (Lefists, Latinos and supporters of BLM) start exercising our second amendment rights, conservatives are going to jump on gun regulations faster than you can say "Ronald Reagan". What is "true" vs "false" freedom of speech? Is there really a cancel culture? Seems to like every time a conservative screams "I've been cancelled" they end up getting a ton of coverage and support from the right, meanwhile academics and journalists are routinely fired for criticizing Israeli government policies towards Palestinians.

This is my favorite part. You know when someone says "a lot to unpack here," they are basically "that" guy/girl.

I am one of those "brown" people you are talking about (kind of racist to so lazily identify someone by the color of their skin, but we can move past it, I guess), and I did not ask you to speak on my behalf. The reason why many of us (Mexicans) want reasonable border security and immigration policies, is we came here the right way, built a life, and are proud to be Americans. America is not obligated to help every needy person coming to our borders illegally, but we always have, because we are a good and noble country. But we want people to be vetted, just like we were, to keep out the gangs, the drug pushers, and the child traffickers, the ones who give the rest of us a bad name, the ones Trump called "animals," the ones Trump said are not our "best and brightest." If you have no law, you have chaos (see: Portland, Seattle, Chicago). If you have no borders, you have no country (see: Sweden).

The rest of your rant is classic inane liberal chatter: right from Rachel Maddow's face to the nearest bathroom wall, which is where you got it. Probably took a couple liberal arts classes in college and now you think you are Harvey Milk + Martin Luther King. You're going to be very lonely over there on the wrong side of history.
I'm latino as well, and a first generation immigrant to the US. So, I wasn't speaking for you, but myself and the majority of latinos that are progressive and don't buy into your self-righteous "I came the right way" bullshit because we know that this country has had a racist immigration system that is arbitrary and unjust.

The rest of your response is classic right-wing insecure trolling, nothing I posted was "inane", you mock it because you can't properly respond to it. Fact is, you can't actually provide a nuanced definition of what "law and order" and "freedom of speech" are without repeating some Fox News/GOP talking point, because that's what those two phrases are... just empty slogans. As most right-wingers obsessed with this idea that everyone is under siege by evil marauding gangs of immigrants,  you are misinformed about crime statistics (crime has consistently gone down for the past two decades) in this country (and the vast majority is committed by citizens - see - https://www.themarshallproject.org/2018/03/30/the-myth-of-the-criminal-immigrant, not immigrants). The U.S. has a lot of great things, sure, it's why so many of us come here,  but you're not doing anyone any favors by ignoring the present and the past. The Chinese Exclusion Act, Operation Wetback, internment of Japanese Americans during WWII, the denial of refuge to thousands of European Jews who were sent back to Europe to die, and more recently, Trump's treatment of refugees and asylum-seekers placing them in indefinite detention.

As for Portland, Seattle, Chicago, protests are pretty much limited to a few blocks, it's laughable that you so easily fell for this "no law/chaos" rhetoric sold to you by a xenophobic conman, who by the way, doesn't really want you or me here.

Oh and yes, I happen to be well-educated. I'm proud of that. I have a BA, MA and now in my second year in PhD program. Migration is my main area of study. But I forget, you right-wingers are anti-intellectual because it's all about belief/feelings.

Wrong side of history? Were you asleep during the 2018 midterms? Republicans are dinosaurs and are going extinct, unless they change. The Republican base (white non-college educated) will be even more of a minority by 2040. Enjoy!

It has always shocked me when immigrants to this country don't want more immigrants here.

America was built on immigrants and can't survive without them.

Most of us do, it's just the self-righteous sh*theads who want to pull the ladder up behind them. Coming "the right way" is either about privilege or luck, or good timing, it does not make you a better immigrant or better citizen.

Op you like and respect Trump?

    As a person?

I'm a lifelong conservative pre-2016 and I've always known Pearl Jam doesn't give two shits about my opinions.  They would be just as happy if I didn't buy their stuff or go to their shows.
They walk the walk and that includes, I'm sure, being a-ok with losing some fans of their music so that they can fully represent what they believe in.

Until this clown was voted in I never felt like our country was doomed.  I do now.  The idea that more people don't hate the idea of such a person holding the office of president really makes me think we are screwed.  I was super anti clinton as a philanderer - and Trump has his old buddy Slick Willie beaten by a hundred miles.

Good for PJ.  Stick to what they believe in.
It doesn't matter than Biden is a joke.  I would vote for an an actual dead person before I would ever vote for Trump.  This isn't about how much more I can make under Trump.  This is about being able to be proud to be an American.  I'm ashamed that we gave the world this fool as our leader.

I will never align myself as a conservative again.  Need to find a new label, if one has to apply.
People who supported Trump will never be looked at the same again, by me.  This includes some people I have been friends with for 20+ years.  I just cannot respect them as much as I did previously, even though I know many of them are good people and do good things in this world.
You actually proved me original thesis for me, sadly. So you will throw away friendships of over 20+ year because someone had the audacity to vote differently than you? Maybe, since you know these people, you would take a closer look at them. If they are good people and they voted for someone you loathe, maybe there is something about Trump you are totally reading wrong. Or is it just "orange man bad, go away, do not want to hear it?"

An open letter to all Trump supporters:

You are not getting how bad trump is. How he lies constantly to benefit himself and create a false and lethally dangerous misunderstanding of this pandemic.

TODAY over 40,000 new cases and about 1000 dead. We experienced deaths comparable to 9/11 SINCE WEDNESDAY

Yall choose to think only of yourselves, so as a nation we are punished because we can't get the infection level down because wearing masks and standing 6 feet apart is too much to ask.

I have close family on my wife's side. I will always think of them for the rest of my life as stupid idiots for the idiotic lies they parrot from trump. This is not political.  It is dangerous stupidity.

If you put my daughters life at risk due to your selfishness,  you are dead to me.

Certain sins are inexcusable.  If you support Trump,  you are likely too consumed thinking of yourself to understand.

I can only assume he's referencing the often repeated islamophobic/white supremacist trope shared by American right-wingers, with zero evidence, that Sweden has been overrun by immigrants.

At this point, Lerxst199 I'm convinced Trump supporters have no interest in really looking at the man for who he is.  If they have, and they support the kind of person he is, they probably have some or several characteristics of his (I won't mention the obvious).

They don't pay attention to the lies as long as what he says fits their agenda.

Why they don't recognize his responsibility in the death of many thousands of people due to COVID is beyond me.  I can only guess it is some extreme form of denial.  One would have to assume they do not believe in science, so no argument will make any difference to them on that subject.

Most of all, I really believe most Trump supporters actually believe they are on some kind of quest to "save America" and "make America stronger again".  And if those sound like empty slogans, that is exactly what they are.  Anyone with the ability to think critically knows that what Trump has done- and hopes to keep doing- is harmful to this country.  They cannot name one thing he has done to make America better in the long run.  I would challenge them to name one so-called accomplishment of his that does not include long-term negative consequences and effects (they will likely choose to ignore the italicized part of those phrases).

No I haven't thrown away the friendships.
However I cannot look at them the same as I did before.  We have spoken about this some, with some of them, and they are voting for their wallets above everything else w/one exception.  The exception is an extreme in everything so it is not surprising that he takes the stance he does.

An important distinction also is that they all recognize that the guy is a complete joke.  An embarrassing fool who makes things worse almost every time he holds a press conference.

I don't think Trump is a bad man.  I know he is.
This is based on my own personal sense of what is right and what is wrong.  He chooses wrong wayyyy to often to be a good man.
The way he conducts himself as our nation's leader is of personal embarrassment to me, as an American.

I know it is funny to make a silly statement such as "orange man bad...." - but my wife worked for one of his companies and has met him a number of times.  We knew what kind of person Trump was years before he got into politics.  Everyone thought he was so funny.  "You're Fired!"
We knew what he was.  Nothing quite so telling as the way someone treats people who work for them.

You didn't answer my question....you like and respect Trump?

What is it that you like about Donald Trump?

    Curious.

Trump threatened to withhold aid to California last year for the wildfires. The fact that he did not follow thru is irrelevant. What he did do - used taxpayer dollars to threaten a state ravaged by fires - because “they are not my supporters.”

Perhaps not many trump supporters come by AMT on any given day, as my open letter to them above got ignored. But they need to understand this is not about politics. This is about wanting to live in a world where truth matters, because if trump wins because people erroneously believe covid is not a threat, or California is not a state worthy of help in a crisis, or Biden is a socialist or Biden is on drugs, all ...

all of that is not political and all of that invalidates trump as an American leader. You can’t continually participate and support his lies and think you have any relevance to those of us who want to live in a freedom and science loving democracy.

Well said, Lerxst.  So much rests on this next election.  So very much.

  • I live in the UK so my opinion on these matters is probably moot, but I would love to hear a rational reason why anyone would vote for Trump? Conservative or not.

If it's a case of not wanting Biden to win, I understand that as he isn't a strong candidate, but if we are talking the lesser of two evils then how anyone can pick Trump over Biden blows my mind.

I read a lot and know a lot about world affairs and I am always keen to learn from people who's ideas/politics differ from mine. Thats what makes the world an interesting place, right?

So please, can someone explain why they would vote for Trump? I won't attack you or argue, I just want to understand.

    Anyone????

Yea, Sleepy Woke Joe Basement Biden is really a racist. In fact, he's so racist he served the first Black man elected POTUS for 8 years. So easily duped. False equivalencies abound. Context can be everything. Actions > words. But you know, both sides are the same. Afraid of all "others." BOO!

Who on Earth would ever wear this? Even if you love Biden. Or...even if you totally hate Trump. Can you look like a bigger dork wearing a "It's Time to Vote/Ridin' With Biden" shirt on?

I'm actually a lot like you politically. Conservative on some things, liberal on others. I'm not a member of either party because they're both a joke. Voted for Obama in 2008, and then Romney in 2012. Would've preferred to vote republican in 2016...if the nominee wasn't Trump. Like you, I do think the band is sincere with their unabashed liberalism. And regarding your question about a MAGA-hat wearer wearing one at a PJ show not to antagonize, but because they wear it every day. It would be perceived as being antagonistic. It just would. People feel antagonized simply by seeing it in the streets. Hell, I don't have any true hatred for Trump-fans, but even I look at them like "Dude, what are you doing?" when I see one in that hat (just as I would if I saw someone in this PJ/Biden shirt). So yeah, I think it would be viewed as antagonistic at a PJ show.

But to be fair, this one is actually a pretty cool design:

To date, "Ridin' with Biden" has to be one of the most embarrassing things Pearl Jam has ever done.  So cringe.  I understand not wanting Trump, but Joe Biden?  The DNC's hand-picked 80 year old in serious cognitive decline?

I was young and at the height of my Pearl Jam fandom when they supported Ralph Nader and were completely anti-George Bush... and I was all for them being outspoken and angry and wanting change.  Nowadays, I don't want to anger those who vote Republican by bashing Trump.  I feel the band used to try to speak up for the little guy (Ticketmaster, Nader, etc.)... now it feels like they're so wealthy and out of touch that they'll be satisfied to make a lame t-shirt for the lesser of two evils in this broken, corrupted process we have.

I with there was a message of trying to bring people back together... I feel like RFK Jr. has said that multiple times, but the DNC is doing everything in their power to suppress him.  Have his naysayers actually listened to his long-form interviews?  So sharp, a real knowledge of history, a great record on environment... but yet many want to dismiss him as "anti-vaccine" and a "conspiracy theorist".

RFK jr gets dismissed because while he may say some feel good things, he’s really out of touch and intentionally deceptive. He isn’t quote anti-vaccine, he actually is anti-vaccine. He does couch his language in plausible deniability as part of his manipulation, but when you pick up on this you can be on to his shit.
