If you are only looking for 2-channel audio, you should be ok going from the tv to the receiver. If you are trying to get multi-channel audio, your tv needs to support surround sound pass-through for that to work (my older tv doesn’t). Otherwise, you should go right from the Apple TV to the receiver.

i 100% disagree with your statement. my atmos setup (7.1.2) goes ape shit with the rears.

I may be doing something wrong then. I only have 5.1, but we should be getting the same stuff from the rears I would think.

I think I figured it out - 4K equipped TVs can support Dolby Vision and/or HDR10 imaging technology. 

Gigaton is encoded in Dolby Vision.
