I still think that if he pledges to remove marijuana from the schedule 1 drug list and expunge all small time marijuana offenses he will win in a landslide and cement the support of the progressives that are still having second thoughts about the effectiveness of the 2 party system
I agree!  I’ll vote for whoever decides to legalize MJ federally.  Talk about laws rooted in racism.
The law is rooted in industrialization.  Hemp was a threat to the timber industry.
Probably, but it's evolution, enforcement, and punishment have been rooted in racism.
Yes,  it has disproportionately affected minorities,  but racism was not behind the original intent.
Semantics, anyway.  If Biden approached the mic and said "I'm going to do everything I can to make marijuana legal" I would go from thinking he's going to lose to thinking he's going to win.  Libertarians who don't love Trump but think he's less evil, people disinterested in voting, third party voters who think "they're both the same"... some of those people would be swayed.  And it's not going to take that many to push Biden over the top in the states that matter.

I don't really think there are many people left who think MJ should be illegal.  And I think essentially nobody would make that their "big issue."  Most people who are hard-core about that probably don't vote Democrat very often anyway.

    Do it, Joe!

Politically it’s a losing issue. Better to have dems send him a bill to sign or after being elected stating he’ll take a serious look at the issue, talk to the states that legalized it and see what the science says about harm, etc. Coming right out and saying it should be legalized or decriminalized allows the opposition to paint him as a “pusher man, sending our kids into a life of drug dependency.” Plus, stoners don’t get off the couch and don’t know when Election Day is.

I think there are still some older citizens who have notions about the devil weed that they're not past.  While it may motivate some progressives and help with some Libertarians (dubious on this one because I think some other issues they oppose are stronger), it may cost Joe some older voters that may cross back to us.  Making weed an issue could play into Trumps law and order narrative.  I would guess that the campaign has done extensive testing on this and feels it's better left unsaid right now

Here in Virginia, it was not a front and center issue last fall with our legislative races.  However, as soon as the session convened (after winning the chambers), moves were made.  I tend to think that's the play.  I still think we were too conservative (making possession a ticket, not a misdemeanor and commissioning a study) but it's still far further than our GOP led sessions ever did.

The states that have some form of legalization should be pushing this in the House and Senate, if only for the revenue generation alone. Let states opt in but allow the companies and banks to conduct business. Regulate it, tax it and decriminalize it.

seems Bidens was a closer variant to Kings quote....

interesting then that Laytons thoughts arent exactly original .....
    from the article.

However, the sentiments Layton made also channel lines from a speech former prime minister Wilfrid Laurier gave in 1916.

“Let me tell you that for the solution of these problems you have a safe guide, an unfailing light if you remember that faith is better than doubt and love is better than hate,” said Laurier.

I would guess that people have been using variations on those themes for centuries. Who is going to argue with "love is better than hate"?

I don’t know I am getting nervous again. With the US poor covid record, shouldn’t Biden have a much better standing in the polls? I am never going to make it thru election night , especially if trump declares victory while many states say there are too many mail in ballots uncounted to declare a winner that night and trump continues to dismantle mail sorters.

I look forward to Trump bragging about how many more people watched the GQP convention than the Dem convention.

So what happens if Trump actually wins. Fairly wins, not wins through a cheat or refuses to concede defeat?  Obviously fascism, etc. but how will that reshape politics if we don’t end up with a full one party Russian style system?

Trump speaking every night will be good for ratings...but not good for Trump.

    LOL, isn't that the truth!

I know how you feel, Lerxst.  I'll be nervous until Trump is out of office.
