So how does it work in the states - if one wants to get tested, is it free? Or does it cost, using ones own insurance or out of pocket if one doesn't have one?

And if you have to take time off work because of it, will you get paid in any way while on sick leave? Depends on the union's agreement with the employer? Or depends on your own health insurance? Or is there a state funded pay for people who have to stay home because of being sick with this?

Tried to stop at the supermarket for 3 items. It’s mobbed. People fighting, empty shelves, no Paper bags (plastic was banned 3/1), absolute chaos. So I’m thinking, what bought out the worst in people?
    a) covid-19
    b) PJ lottery

Nah. Rangers season canceled so nothing better to do.

Not sure why LN keeps putting them in large venues. Jones Beach show has almost every seat available for sale. And that's not because of the virus! Poor Nickelback.

My company is implementing a recommended WFH beginning tomorrow.

I have a short commute and it's a fairly small office building with about 70 coworkers.
Most people will be WFH. With this place empty I'm actually considering coming in for a few days per week for faster network and printing.

    How nuts am I?
I would go in also when/if my office implements this. I work better sitting in the actual office. And have better equipment there for the shit I do.

    And I would:

It's always interesting to me who feels more productive from home vs. office. As a nerd, I've always found my job is far easier in my own space where I can focus. If we do end up on WFH, what I'll miss most is my whiteboard, but my iPad will suffice I guess.

That's pretty funny sc and I'll probably do dance clairvoyantly on desks next week if I venture into the contagion

As far as more productive it's funny when I'm not in the office I find myself overthinking...how do I get that data, how do I filter, etc. Creature of habit in old age.

Someone above mentioned the election, is it possible the election could be postponed or canceled?

If so I would just see even more chaos, this is getting REAL ugly REAL quick.

I think it's time for me to turn off the news.  Major news media is all about selling a story and with this virus, doing so in the best way they know how to incite fear and stir shit.  And they are damn good at it.

I think it's time to start looking at this differently- realistically.  The bottom line is, this virus is bad, it's going to spread more before it goes away, it's going to make a lot of people sick and most of us will likely know or know of someone who will die.  But most people who get it will not die and the bigger concern right now is how people are reacting to it.  And here is a letter that explains tha better than I can and I thin it is important to read this.

    From Abdu Sharkawy

I'm a doctor and an Infectious Diseases Specialist. I've been at this for more than 20 years seeing sick patients on a daily basis. I have worked in inner city hospitals and in the poorest slums of Africa. HIV-AIDS, Hepatitis,TB, SARS, Measles, Shingles, Whooping cough, Diphtheria...there is little I haven't been exposed to in my profession. And with notable exception of SARS, very little has left me feeling vulnerable, overwhelmed or downright scared.

I am not scared of Covid-19. I am concerned about the implications of a novel infectious agent that has spread the world over and continues to find new footholds in different soil. I am rightly concerned for the welfare of those who are elderly, in frail health or disenfranchised who stand to suffer mostly, and disproportionately, at the hands of this new scourge. But I am not scared of Covid-19.

What I am scared about is the loss of reason and wave of fear that has induced the masses of society into a spellbinding spiral of panic, stockpiling obscene quantities of anything that could fill a bomb shelter adequately in a post-apocalyptic world. I am scared of the N95 masks that are stolen from hospitals and urgent care clinics where they are actually needed for front line healthcare providers and instead are being donned in airports, malls, and coffee lounges, perpetuating even more fear and suspicion of others. I am scared that our hospitals will be overwhelmed with anyone who thinks they " probably don't have it but may as well get checked out no matter what because you just never know..." and those with heart failure, emphysema, pneumonia and strokes will pay the price for overfilled ER waiting rooms with only so many doctors and nurses to assess.

I am scared that travel restrictions will become so far reaching that weddings will be canceled, graduations missed and family reunions will not materialize. And well, even that big party called the Olympic Games...that could be kyboshed too. Can you even
    imagine?

I'm scared those same epidemic fears will limit trade, harm partnerships in multiple sectors, business and otherwise and ultimately culminate in a global recession.

But mostly, I'm scared about what message we are telling our kids when faced with a threat. Instead of reason, rationality, openmindedness and altruism, we are telling them to panic, be fearful, suspicious, reactionary and self-interested.

Covid-19 is nowhere near over. It will be coming to a city, a hospital, a friend, even a family member near you at some point. Expect it. Stop waiting to be surprised further. The fact is the virus itself will not likely do much harm when it arrives. But our own behaviors and "fight for yourself above all else" attitude could prove disastrous.

I implore you all. Temper fear with reason, panic with patience and uncertainty with education. We have an opportunity to learn a great deal about health hygiene and limiting the spread of innumerable transmissible diseases in our society. Let's meet this challenge together in the best spirit of compassion for others, patience, and above all, an unfailing effort to seek truth, facts and knowledge as opposed to conjecture, speculation and catastrophizing.

Facts not fear. Clean hands. Open hearts.
Our children will thank us for it.

Yes, many states have mail in voting.  That's why CA takes so long to count all the vote.  It is not a federal rule though, it's managed at the state level.  There's also early voting where you can go to the court house or other places in your district and vote before election day.  For me in VA, you just need a reason (for example, I was traveling on election day in '16 so I voted the weekend before).
