My brother  has 10 people  in his house he and his step sons gf have had the  vaccine  as they work in a care home. But now 2 weeks after 1 dose the girl has covid. And his house of 10 are all in there for 10 days and if anyone  else comes down then another 10 days. My brother has a test everyday at home as rules of his care home. So I'm sitting  at home scared for him. It was me who persuaded  him to get the vaccine  and with  such mixed info on 1 dose being now 33% affective not 89% like we were told by our lying  government.  I will keep everyone up to date as to what happens.
I understood one dose primer to be much less effective than the second booster. I'm surprised you didn't access information to that effect. Although, I thought the first dose was closer to 50ish% and the second mid-90s%.

Since it takes BC four days to trace the virus for variants and we can't keep pace with our cases, we are considering ramping up contact tracing to include the contacts of contacts.

Our government told us on tv. It was 89%  after  2 weeks. Second  dose is a booster to get longevity.  I spoke to my brother  . This girl had the Oxford astrazenica one about 2 weeks ago so must have caught it in the period where still susceptible.
Our government  decided  best to cover double the  amount of people with some immunity  quicker.  Against  what Pfizer  advised.  Oxford  says their vaccine  is better with a longer  gap. I call bullshit on all of that.

Ya, university kids in my planning adult education course complain about media credibility and their own education not preparing them.

BC renewed their curriculum with a great focus on critical thinking and of course how to access primary and secondary sources for screen information gathering. (We did a lot more, too. Maker and tech rooms are the norm, along with student led inquiries, experiential learning, numeracy, literacy, and socioemotional context.)

The general media almost always gets science reporting wrong. You can't capture the nuances of the information in headlines and 30 second soundbites.

This is so true. Just got out of a campus wide Zoom meeting where we had state health officials present to answer questions and I was amazed at the lack of knowledge people had or just plain misinformation they "heard". People just run with shit they don't even know is true. It's baffling to me.
    It's a hopeless situation...

my daughter this morning told me one of her high school teachers told the class we'd be facing covid-related restrictions until 2023. I told her her teacher is full of shit and she got mad at me. LOL

seriously, what kind of teacher tells already-stressed-the-fuck-out students something like that? FFS.

To be fair it is the same outlet bbc news. Its pretty much all we have on TV here

Yes, but the news reporters have less than a minute to give updates on even the most important stories, and they seize on the most alarming and/or salacious bits of those to keep the viewers' attention.

I personally don't really see the value in watching any news. Much better to read legitimate material than try to sift out the facts from the fluff.

i'd have to agree there. i stopped watching the news years ago. it's basically a (slightly expanded) video version of a headline.

  • In the UK we don't have many news outlets on TV. Only a couple i can think of. Because  I don't use the Internet  much. Only to come  here really . So I'm up at 4 am with the young one and bbc news is on for hours before normal tv starts.  Its all very repetitive

Its funny, kids often believe what teachers told them first. As a chemistry teacher I get all kids of questions that kids learned years ago, and they usually believe their 5th grade gen ed teacher over a science teacher. Things like they were told their blood looks blue in their arm because it doesn't have oxygen in it and when I tell them otherwise its "no, but my 5th grade teacher said this, she's right." Well, good luck at life if your blood doesn't have oxygen in it.
