Stay safe out there mcgruff. Doesn't look like things are going to get any better out there any time soon with your neighbor NY already up to 25,000+ cases. They are expecting to see the worse yet to come in NY in the next 3 weeks. Hopefully we will see FDA drug approvals to help combat this sooner than later.
It is definitely nerve racking here, I havent been in contact with anyone in a few days. Will continue that trend Although a liquor store run is imminent.

If the Baffoon wants everything to start up in two weeks let him be the 1st to show up at a restaurant full of people let him be the 1st to sit at sporting even in the regular seats not in a private box, he’s no leader that’s for damn sure! This country doesn’t need him one bit the governor’s have already proven that!

It’s actually one week because he’s referring to it beginning last week.

Listening to trump say “we are America and we are not built for a shutdown” sounds a lot like “we the wealthy demand our slave labor back to work.”

let’s let the economists dictate how to get out of a health emergency. Typical American bull$hit. Too bad if that means millions more die and a second wave kills more and a different age group. To quote a famous republican, oops.

for any pro business person thinking economists should dictate how we get out of a healthcare nightmare, consider if you are a business leader or owner, and you are saying we should not listen to the Health specialists and re socialize soon...

...consider I will never buy your product again and will tell everyone I know to tell everyone they know to do same. I will endlessly comment on the 4th largest website in America and continue to pass the word about your choice of business over lives.

further, I will not be attending any sporting events nor going to any restaurants

im sure millions will act in the same way. How you think the economy recovers under those conditions?
So what about the people living paycheck to paycheck that desperately need to get back to work? How about the people that don’t have a pile of money to weather this storm?  There is clearly not hope of a safety net or recovery for the poor and lower middle class here in America. Is it horrible for us to want to go back to work because even though the money isn’t coming in anymore the bills are still rolling in like clockwork?  I’m all for continuing the self isolation if you can guarantee that millions of working Americans won’t come out of it financially insolvent or bankrupt or worse.  It’s not just the stockbrokers and ultra rich that want the economy running it is also the people with bills to pay that don’t want to end in poverty.  If the wealthy and corporations among us and the government want to get together and make a security net I say keep the quarantine going.  If you want millions of Americans to have to honor their debts, bills and buy necessary items like food etc with no money coming in that is not going to fly for long.

Everyone is talking about trump and republicans and economists but no one is looking at the poor and working class it seems.

Are they better off dead after committing multiple murders?
Lol because going to work is the same as murdering.  Quite extreme.  So protecting the lives of people from the virus is more important than protecting people’s lives and livelihoods from the economic impact? Check.
Let me guess you are financially set to get through this for the long haul?  or are a member of an at risk populations?  What about the at risk poor and working class that may not make it through an extended shut down? Or are the needs of them less important?

If you are really worried about murdering really take a step outside your immediate reaction and think what will happen if millions plunge into financial ruin. I’m sure they will be so busy breaking their arms patting themselves on the back for staying inside and going broke to do anything drastic.

As ever before. I am all for extending the quarantine if there is a safety net for those in immediate or short term financial risk.  If not people are gonna have to do something. And it won’t be their fault if people die. It will be the fault of The credit card companies, landlords and banks that continue demanding money when none comes in. As well as our elected leaders for doing nothing.  If I have to go to work to keep myself and my family from financial ruin like millions of others and the option is there I will. And that won’t make me or anyone else a monster or a horrible person.

Your points are valid, but what do you think is going to happen if everyone goes back to work and the virus keeps spreading?

Do you think the economy is going to bounce back with an incredibly contagious disease crippling our hospitals?

Do you think people are going to be going to bars and restaurants in this scenario?

I agree there needs to be a safety net for people most affected, but the only way to address this virus is to contain it.

I agree 💯 bit it seems like not many people are thinking about anything but the virus itself. Either option is horrible going back to work or indefinite quarantine. No one has a moral high ground here. This really illustrates our broken political system like nothing I’ve seen as well as the class divide. I’ve written letters to my senators.  Cruz and Cormyn. Fat lot of good those  idiots are gonna do.  No sector of the population is more important than the other. People in charge need to make some drastic measures.

I have not been anywhere around other people in about a week. (Don't remember what day it was - was very careful and washed just as I got back, cleaned anything I touched on my way back in.)  Had to go to CVS to pick up a prescription for the 5 yr old.
Before that it was...perhaps the 14th since I went out?  My wife went out on the 15th but has not since.
(Running myself or walks with the family notwithstanding.)

    Strange times.

Shocked that nobody we know has it yet.  Especially some of my wife's mouth-breathing, fucking hillbilly, extended family in South Jersey -- they continued as if nothing was going on, despite what we said, until the governor ordered shit to change this weekend.

My local shop took my order and credit card payment over the phone, I backed my car in, opened the trunk and they placed it in my trunk. Literally zero contact. Worth a shot to see if your shop will do that if you know what you want in advance. Stay safe

This had been a great thread where we can come together and share our experiences and concerns about the COVID-19 virus.  Now, all of the sudden, it's becoming infected with it's own virus- arguments over a few simple comments about celebrities with COVID-19.  If Eddie Vedder gets COVID-19 will we see the same nasty comments?  Jesus H, people, isn't this a hard enough time without some of you coming here just to be nasty?  Fuck that.
@brianlux Absolutely agree. Hope all is well with you and your family and friends.

Thank you!  I hope you and yours are also doing well.

Best wishes to all here.  Stay strong, stay well, be realistic but let's also be supportive and positive.

But I don't think anyone is talking about "indefinite quarantine".

Unless I'm mistaken, other countries have seen positive results after several weeks of aggressive lockdowns.

Going back to work may solve some financial problems for a lot of people in the short term, but what good will that be if the virus rages unchecked forcing companies to close (again) and killing hundreds of thousands if not millions?

If it doesn't get contained more sooner than later, you can kiss any hope of a healthy economy goodbye for years.

The longer we wait to aggressively approach this, the worse it will get in all aspects, including the economic toll.

I have little faith that our government can come up with a plan to address all these concerns.  We (my family) can make it 2-3 months here. But if as they say a vaccine may not be ready for 18 months what then.  If you wait 2-3 months for the number Of infected to go down and open everything for business isn’t it likely that the number of infected will explode again?  And then you repeat the process?

You raise a lot of good points and it has me thinking differently. I still see a huge need to address the financial concerns of everyone that is out of work.

I'm certainly nowhere near panic mode yet. I just have a problem with the current shortsighted, take it day by day view. There are people with severe economic needs, and everyday that that side of the crisis is not addressed things get a little bit worse, and it gets closer to being a bigger problem for more and more people on the lower end of the wealthiest country on earth.

That was stocked up on, early on.

The "do you know anyone that has it?" line is going around in the right wing circles.  That's how they are trying to call this an overreaction.
There was a good article in the NYT a couple of days ago about just that mindset. A woman in a conservative state (can’t remember which one) kept seeing her fb friends asking “do you know of anyone who actually has this?”, dismissing it as a liberal hoax. This woman’s own husband was in ICU, critically ill with COVID-19 but was reluctant to tell anyone. Eventually she decided she had to cut through the bs and posted on fb that yes, indeed, she did know someone with it. Her fb friends were shocked, and they changed their tune, but seems like they needed to personally know someone before they would believe what is being reported worldwide.

Unfortunately, soon enough they’ll all know someone with it.

I'm so sorry for your situation, I truly am. Maybe in the coming weeks they start to find some drugs that help treat this? IDK, we have to have hope... I don't know what else to say.

Hopefully this gets figured out ASAP... if this gets out of control our doctors and nurses are up the river.

When that happens, we're all going to be screwed.

I agree there needs to be a safety net for people most affected, but the only way to address this virus is to contain it.

The thing is, the plan isn't really to contain it.  The plan is to flatten the curve, so the number of people requiring hospitalization is minimized.   IE prevent everyone from getting it at the same time, to prevent overrunning health services.

The problem is if it works, it leaves most of the population without immunity to it (because they haven't had it).   They can't relax the rules so much, because if a few people still have it, get out there, it flashes up again.   I think the lockdown would have to last months (and months?).

If they didn't slow it down.   I'd expect it to go crazy.  Lost of people overwhelming the hospital systems.  Lots of people trying to fight it at home.  Give it a few months I'd expect it to have run its course, lots of survivors immune to it, but the mortality rate would be awful.

I suppose the problem is the social distancing and stay at home techniques only work if we keep them up for a long long time.    China has locked down stuff 2 or 3 months ago, and it just starting to ease up now.

There's always the other other option.  Lock everything down for 21 days global wide.   Real lock down.. none of this, whole bunch of things are still running stuff.   Everyone stay at their homes for 21 days.    The virus should run itself out with nowhere to spread to?

I'm thinking about using the little money I have saved to buy an apartment... and instead ask and see what the restaurant my mom got laid off think they need to survive with rent costs etc and lend them money instead (if that is a possibility). To save my moms last years of being able to work, and the social aspects of her work that she will miss.

I am worried about what will happen to her if being stuck in unemployment these last years untill pension.

Same in our area. Once the FDA lifted the restriction that only approved companies could make hand sanitizer many local craft distillers (including Heritage who did the PJ Home Shows bourbon) started making it. It was pretty cool to see, and a demonstration of how regulations can both help (product safety) and hurt (unavailability due to restrictions on production). In times of crisis it is nice to see impediments to progress being removed. I'm not advocating that wholesale across the board, but am happy to see common sense enter into the equation from time to time. Heritage is selling bottles of the stuff in their normal liquor bottles, and they also have it on tap at their distilleries. Bring your own 8oz container for a free fill up with purchase. I haven't done it because I'm not needlessly going out, but I appreciate the contribution of different local businesses to getting communities through this mess.

I agree, it's going to be a problem to deal with for some time. & you're right... containment isn't the right word, but slowing it down will be beneficial not only for our nurses & doctors, there could also be a breakthrough in treatment in that time as well... probably not a cure per se, but a better way to treat the symptoms, who knows?

(If we don't slow it down, make sure you don't have a heart attack or get in a car accident in the next 6 months.)

I don't know what the answer is, but I do think as a society we should be focusing on the healthcare aspect & helping those on the front lines first & foremost.

I'm also not at the point (& hope I never will be) where I'm willing to sacrifice the weaker members of our population for the sake of prospective economic health. Economies can recover, dead people can't. (stole that from someone... I can't recall if it was here or elsewhere)
