it's because he is a god damn fucking moron. he cannot think beyond himself. he has 6 of 7 revenue producing properties shut down. he is thinking about his own wealth and his own business. he cares not for the american people, only himself. and he will find a way to go against the experts because his base trusts trump and his gut feelings.

my prediction is he will open things up a bit next week. cases will spike. and then he will criticize states for opening things up and will say that he never said to relax any restrictions.

He is clueless, Brian.  I can easily see him making decisions like this that go against everything the medical experts are suggesting.  But hey, who knows better than the Donald, right?

He's like the world's biggest troll.  I sometimes think for him it must be all about being as obnoxious as he possible can.

This had been a great thread where we can come together and share our experiences and concerns about the COVID-19 virus.  Now, all of the sudden, it's becoming infected with it's own virus- arguments over a few simple comments about celebrities with COVID-19.  If Eddie Vedder gets COVID-19 will we see the same nasty comments?  Jesus H, people, isn't this a hard enough time without some of you coming here just to be nasty?  Fuck that.

So - he clearly still thinks it's not a big deal.  He is probably pissed because he let someone convince him to let the Dr take the lead but then it kept getting more restrictive.   The economy is important and people will die due to a poor economy as well...but damn, he cannot stay on point for more than a couple of days.

India went on lock-down today.  That is 1.4 billion people.  The Prime Minister said something to the effect of (I am paraphrasing) they will experience a lot of pain over the next 21 days during lock-down, but it will be far less than the 21 years it would take to rebuild without it.  This seems like a very logical statement and approach when following guidance of medical experts.  I fully understand the economic implications of this.  That's where the government needs to step in and announce a plan to keep small business afloat, along with assuring people that can't go to work they will have income and a moratorium on bills.  There are no perfect answers here, but the only way to stop the spread is to shut everything down.  We're the only country I know of that seems to think sending everyone back out into the streets is a smart approach.  Well, one person we know of thinks that anyway.  Fucking dummy.

    I can't deal with all this S O C I A L I S M.

I don't see how that is financially possible. 1 month of covering salaries has got to be eat up the budget for the entire year. Its all nice to hear and sounds great, but where does that money come from? DO they pay these salaries for a month then government shuts down for the rest of the year? I just don't see how that is possible.
It's amazing what you can accomplish when you don't spend 55% of your entire budget on war.
True, but what is the income tax in Denmark?
I just googled it, average over the last 20 years was 65%. It’s also amazing what you can afford when you tax your citizens an astonishing 65%.
That didn’t seem right, but saw it posted in several sites.
and if they pay 75% of their salary, then tax them 65%, they really are paying less than half.

If we were to look at a larger blue state like the one I live in, that tend to provide services to its residents, when you add up all taxes, income fedl state local, fica, property and sales taxes, excise taxes and on... the effective rate is probably close to 50%.

now let’s add on the cost of college and healthcare, you are probably right at that European rate of 65%

but Euros don’t have to worry about bankruptcy issues to the extent we do in the states caused by healthcare or excessive college costs. Plus they don’t have slow as crap trains and pot holed roads because their 65% covers infrastructure modernization.
Not to start a debate on different countries and all that comes with that on this board. And I do not know how accurate this forbes infographic is, but here are at least some numbers. I do not know where the 65% thing comes from.

    ..

The commenters were citing percentage of personal income. Your graphic is percent of GDP.
Okey, then some rankings I've seen  on personal income says between 55-60.

But a breakdown in Swedish seems to show you pay roughly: 8 percent + 24 (municipal tax)

    Then between 46.500-531.000 DKK an additional + 12,14 %

So, for most people: 8+24+12,14 = 42,14 percent.

And the amount above 531.000 DKK an additional 15 percent.

But who knows. Only the danes.

Yes, more taxes are paid. And yes the danish government is helping out to try to stop an economic crisis.

There are many right wing talking points about tax rates that are complete lies.

one of the big ones before trump changed the tax code, “the US Corporations pay the highest tax rate in the world.”

that was always a conservative lie, for the overwhelming majority of corporations. Most of the large ones pay little or none, just look at amazon as an example.

and most smaller corporations pay close to zero taxes, because they file as a sub s which passes the income to its owners at the personal tax rate, NOT the Corp rate.

so now these same pro economy buffoons want to tell us how to survive a lethal pandemic. This is one effed up country.

let’s let the economists dictate how to get out of a health emergency. Typical American bull$hit. Too bad if that means millions more die and a second wave kills more and a different age group. To quote a famous republican, oops.

im sure millions will act in the same way. How you think the economy recovers under those conditions?
So what about the people living paycheck to paycheck that desperately need to get back to work? How about the people that don’t have a pile of money to weather this storm?  There is clearly not hope of a safety net or recovery for the poor and lower middle class here in America. Is it horrible for us to want to go back to work because even though the money isn’t coming in anymore the bills are still rolling in like clockwork?  I’m all for continuing the self isolation if you can guarantee that millions of working Americans won’t come out of it financially insolvent or bankrupt or worse.  It’s not just the stockbrokers and ultra rich that want the economy running it is also the people with bills to pay that don’t want to end in poverty.  If the wealthy and corporations among us and the government want to get together and make a security net I say keep the quarantine going.  If you want millions of Americans to have to honor their debts, bills and buy necessary items like food etc with no money coming in that is not going to fly for long.

Everyone is talking about trump and republicans and economists but no one is looking at the poor and working class it seems.

Are they better off dead after committing multiple murders?
Lol because going to work is the same as murdering.  Quite extreme.  So protecting the lives of people from the virus is more important than protecting people’s lives and livelihoods from the economic impact? Check.
Let me guess you are financially set to get through this for the long haul?  or are a member of an at risk populations?  What about the at risk poor and working class that may not make it through an extended shut down? Or are the needs of them less important?

If you are really worried about murdering really take a step outside your immediate reaction and think what will happen if millions plunge into financial ruin. I’m sure they will be so busy breaking their arms patting themselves on the back for staying inside and going broke to do anything drastic.

As ever before. I am all for extending the quarantine if there is a safety net for those in immediate or short term financial risk.  If not people are gonna have to do something. And it won’t be their fault if people die. It will be the fault of The credit card companies, landlords and banks that continue demanding money when none comes in. As well as our elected leaders for doing nothing.  If I have to go to work to keep myself and my family from financial ruin like millions of others and the option is there I will. And that won’t make me or anyone else a monster or a horrible person.

Stay safe out there mcgruff. Doesn't look like things are going to get any better out there any time soon with your neighbor NY already up to 25,000+ cases. They are expecting to see the worse yet to come in NY in the next 3 weeks. Hopefully we will see FDA drug approvals to help combat this sooner than later.

Your points are valid, but what do you think is going to happen if everyone goes back to work and the virus keeps spreading?

Do you think the economy is going to bounce back with an incredibly contagious disease crippling our hospitals?

Do you think people are going to be going to bars and restaurants in this scenario?

I agree there needs to be a safety net for people most affected, but the only way to address this virus is to contain it.
