As far as hope goes, my bucket is empty, and my only sympathy is for the animals that will be given back their rightful home in an obliterated state.

There is a lot of hope in the possibility that the earth will thrive with life once again when humans are either greatly reduced in numbers or gone all together.  Barring a cataclysmic disaster, life could continue on earth for another 1.75 billion years or so.

Extinction level is like what killed the dinosaurs. It doesn't mean it would kill every living organism. But it would kill off a massive majority of existing animals and plants and completely change the Earth's ecosystem - it's like starting from scratch.
