Having recently found God and Jesus as my savior, this song means alot to me. I mean, at first hear, I felt almost confused. The music was beautiful, the words were beautiful, but it was like I just wasn't quite sure what he was talking about. I think Ed's found God. I think he has found love for a higher power, and I believe this because it's how I feel in regards to finding a love that powerful. It's definitely NOT about any woman.

Maybe he's found the love that only a child can bring to your heart....

Yeah that line is definately my favorite too. I want to reach up and "scrap the sky" for some reason hehe. Anyone notice all the heights and falling references in this album?

You're not alone... I've noticed these references too. The key is to have someone there to pick you up after you've fallen.

Honestly, I'm really hoping to hear this song when they play in Cincy on June 24th!! I think it would be nice to play in a 2nd Encore, right as the show is coming to a close, play Parachutes, Come Back, then close with Yellow Ledbetter!!!

i'm so heartened that mike said this song still needs to get played....here's hoping it shows up soon in a setlist (and that it'll be played at any show i'm at too!)

side note: went to a friend's wedding this weekend, and this was on the playlist for her reception :) good stuff!

Awww B, I was actually just coming to BUMP this up as well. Excellent call. The SAP sister connection I guess huh? ;):p How sweet about your friends wedding and how completely perfect too. :) Ahh, like we said before, this song just captures love. This song = love. :o

<~~ just started the heavenly repeat session

    *knocked to my knees*

    :o:o:o

It continues to floor me with it's overwhelmingly gorgeous ways. How in the? It's seriously unbelieveable how out of control beautiful this song is!

I love reading all the recent posts in this thread too. There's just so much beauty all around this song. :)

he still stands, I especially liked your "The key is to have someone there to pick you up after you've fallen." comment. AWWWW! YES!! Your very own PARACHUTE. :o:)

If they play this song in BOSTONE and/or CAMDEN I will go into orgasmic shock (to say the very least)!!!!

    heehee great minds and all!

i also am enjoying reading peoples' take on this song, and agree that the "The key is to have someone there to pick you up after you've fallen" comment is quite true. to an extent, i think this song touches on how someone can catch you before you even fall, love intercepts.

are you going to boston/camden? if so, i do hope they play it for ya!! if i hear about someone exploding, i'll know it's you :p haha

the song is my favorite. i've not even been fair to the rest of the album because of it. i love it. i get to it and then hit repeat over and over and over and over and over again.

i love the music and the words remind me of my relationship with my husband. to quote VEDHEAD27 "Ahh, like we said before, this song just captures love. This song = love . . . AWWWW! YES!! Your very own PARACHUTE"

    i just love it. :)

Definitely one of my faves off the new album. I keep thinking strawberry fields. Anyone else?
A lot of references in this album to faith, god soul. Mid-life pathfinding maybe?

  • Yes, this is one of my favs on this disc. But I think it has more of a Pink Floyd influence. Don't think so?

If any of you have Obscured By Clouds, check out "Wot's.....Uh The Deal?"

bubba i haven't any pink floyd so i don't know about an influence, the beatles one i hear loud and clear, but that's interesting that there is a PF one too lurking about!

Aww, and thanks so much for the good vibes about getting his beauty. :) I really do feel it and the thought alone is too much to deal with.

we gotta market some kleenex with PJ logos all over 'em at the shows, we'd make a mint!

between the gems on the new album, how the boys have been playing, and the amazing setlists, i think it's safe to say that yup, we're SO fucked (in a good way :D haha)

Love, real love, is something extraordinary. Surpasses anything else here on earth. Surpasses space and time. Sometimes it takes a fall to realize that.

I am struggling with the meaning of this song..

the war reference at the end seems random.. and Eddie's lyrics are never random.. help me pull this songs meaning together

So the first time I listened to the new album, the first 5 songs just kind of flew by and all ran together (although they're all completely awesome, don't get me wrong). Then Parachutes came on, and I just completely stopped what I was doing. It is absolutely gorgeous and probably my favorite song of the album. I felt such a rush of euphoria the first time I listened to it, and it still gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.

the song very just by coincidence chronicles the relationship of me and my husband. the album came out on his birthday and it means sososososo much to us that the same day we saw our baby for the first time (the ultrasound) we also bought the album . . . may 2nd.

but we love this band so personally for how much their songs have touched us.

when my husband was in the navy riot act came out, and "i am mine" was in his head the entire time he decided to leave. september 11th had happened, he had to move with the ship, and we knew it was just a matter of time before they'd start deploying people. he came home when he got the chance and did not go back . . . his friend who joined two weeks after was not allowed out and went to iraq.

the years we've spent waiting and hoping that the military would not call him back to finish his inactive duty has been at times terrible. every time military personnel called our home, i thought i'd pass out.

on the twelth of may this year he was honorably discharged. so parachutes very literally reminds me of all this time for us after the decision we made with "i am mine"

thanks so much pearl jam . . . we love you!

Why deny all the troubles when combined
With the missing link it don't feel like home now

That your gone all the trouble suddenly explained infinitum
You're always wishing and never here at home

You all the dreams we shared and
    Lights we turned on
But the house is getting dark

And I don't want to know your plans
    But together share the dawn
And I won't need nothing else
    Cause when we're dead
    We would've had it all

And I would've fallen from the sky to you
    Parachutes have opened now

Heaven knows if there's a ceiling
Gone so low with the kneeling
    Please know that
That I've got all the friends I need and
    Before my light goes out
As the doors are closing now

And far away will be my home
And the grass beside them blown
    But I don't need
Further back and forth, a wave will break on me today

    And love
Wish the world could glow again with love
One can't seem to have enough

    And war
Break the sky and tell me what it's for
    Travelling on my own

    And love
    What a different life

Someone else suggested that there is a theme to this album and it is about a soldier. I could definitely see that and if so, this may be about a soldier at war and his/her love for someone. Absolutely beautiful and soothing song.

Damn, this song gets more personal and beautiful everytime I listen to it. I didn't pay attention when I first heard it, until someone very much loved by me posted the lyrics to it on another MB. I haven't been able to stop listening to it. I was so pissed that it wasn't played at the first Chicago show. Oh well, at least they did "Come Back," another favorite of mine.
How dark a woe! yet how sublime a hope!
How silently serene a sea of pride!
How daring an ambition! yet how deep--
How fathomless a capacity for love!
