    Trump Organization faces new scrutiny in New York civil probe

    The Trump Organization is facing new pressure to comply with a New York state civil investigation into the company's financial dealings.

    A New York judge has given the former president's company until next week to report on its efforts to furnish records subpoenaed by the state attorney general, according to a court order unsealed on Friday.

    The judge's order also gives New York state Attorney General Letitia James (D) a possible avenue to bring on a third party to assist with collecting company records for the probe, which is looking into whether Trump misled banks and insurers about the value of his financial assets.

    The court order, signed earlier this month and made public Friday, comes amid ongoing clashes between the Trump Organization and James over her office's requests for documents and depositions.

    "For more than a year now, the Trump Organization has failed to adequately respond to our subpoenas, hiding behind procedural delays and excuses," James said in a statement. "Once again, the court has ordered that the Trump Organization must turn over the information and documents we are seeking, otherwise face an independent third-party that will ensure that takes place."

    An attorney for the Trump Organization did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

    The New York attorney general opened the investigation in March 2019 after the president's former attorney, Michael Cohen, testified to Congress that President Trump had altered the value of his assets in financial statements in order to get loans, better insurance rates and tax breaks.

    Where's Bull Durham when you need him? From Letter From an American:

    Perhaps the Democrats are pushing back on the bullying of the Trump loyalists in part because some who have previously escaped legal jeopardy are now in trouble. In Florida, Gaetz’s former friend Joel Greenberg, who has pleaded guilty to sex trafficking, got an extension on sentencing Monday because he is still providing information to investigators. Assistant U.S. Attorney Roger Handberg told the court that Greenberg has made allegations that "take us to some places we did not anticipate." 

    There is a shorter timeline for Representative Jeff Fortenberry (R-NE), who was indicted yesterday for lying to the FBI about foreign campaign contributions (which are illegal under U.S. law). Fortenberry uploaded a video to YouTube, titled “I wanted you to hear from me first,” giving his version of events before the indictment dropped. In the video, filmed in a car with his wife and dog, he talked of the money in question but insisted he didn’t know it was from a foreign donor. Unfortunately, it appears there was a phone call between the congressman and the co-host of the fundraiser that brought in the illegal money. That individual was cooperating with the FBI, and in the call, he and Fortenberry discussed the illegal money in clear terms.

    All I want for Christmas is an indictment, preferably one for Hillary Clinton. But any indictment issued by Special Counsel Bull Durham will do. Especially if it's for Obama. Or Hunter Biden. Or even Brandon. I mean, I've been super good and everything and I know if there is one person who can grant me my wish, it's you Santa. Please? And can you please make it a really big indictment? You know, like one that justifies and reflects the Fruit from the Poisonous Tree? Maybe like one of those Edible Delights? Or a gift basket from Larry David? Anyways, with flying reindeer and your ability to squeeze down chimneys, you have to be able to get the goods on one of these communist, socialist, God and country haters and put them in Bull Durham's stocking, right? Please Santa, please? I mean you have elves too, right? Please Santa?     If the AG has significant evidence, what's the purpose of going public with this without announcing any charges? I get that they're trying to compel them to make a deposition, but if I had to guess, the Trumps are now going to stall stall stall and by the time they do make any depositions, they'll either plea the 5th or conveniently not recall a heck of a lot.

    This is a civil investigation, not criminal.  
    Isn't there a criminal fraud investigation as well?

    If the AG has significant evidence, what's the purpose of going public with this without announcing any charges? I get that they're trying to compel them to make a deposition, but if I had to guess, the Trumps are now going to stall stall stall and by the time they do make any depositions, they'll either plea the 5th or conveniently not recall a heck of a lot. 
    This is a civil investigation, not criminal.  
    Isn't there a criminal fraud investigation as well?

    Not necessarily.  There could be consent orders that affect future business practices, reporting requirements to the state, judgments, etc.  But not jail time or anything else that is criminal in nature.

    The worst thing is he loses his ability to operate a business in NY, if he is a principle.  But I can tell you that consent orders are very painful.  So yeah, not nearly as bad as a criminal charge, but not great.
