The last one is the best sandwich I’ve ever ate in my life. Dalessandro’s, American cheese without onions. It is in fact pornographic, hopefully the mods don’t close this thread.

    This is sooo derailed lol.

I'm also partial to adding some spicy horseradish sauce post-dip.
  • For sure!

And that last Philly sandwich did not score any points for being beautiful. I'm not discounting the possibility of being great tasting though. RiotZ has a bit of street cred.

I do? Lol. But I really don’t need it, it’s Dalessandro’s, it’s very commonly know as one of the best. 4.5 stars on yelp with thousands of reviews.

Not to derail the thread, but while most chicagoans agree on lou’s for pizza, you’ll get at least a handful of answers for good local beef sandwiches.
Is there much parity with dipped vs dry when it comes to beef sandwiches? I’ve always gotten mine dry with sauce on the side and I feel like I get judged for that by some of the looks I’ve gotten.
I think there’s a fair amount of parity between the top beef spots in Chicago in terms of their sandwich quality, but dipped vs. dry is a whole different animal. Depending on which side someone is on, they may defend it pretty hard. For me, I don’t like it too dry, but dripping with au jus is too much. It makes the bread too soggy and it falls apart and it’s just a mess imo. The best beef sandwiches have just the right balance of au jus to make the beef moist with a slight sogginess to the bread.  The au jus is what makes the sandwich though. That’s where the flavor is at. And you have to add sweet peppers or hot giardiniera to the sandwich.  One or the other is a must.

But if your preference is to get it dry and dip it in some au jus on the side, nothing wrong with that at all pal. Wave those dirty-lookers the bird!
are these in the same lines of "french dip" sandwiches?  where do I go for these?!
Italian beef is different than a French dip and much better imo. The photo below is a Portillos beef. It’s a real pic I stole online rather than the perfected shots you might see in a commercial. This is the real deal. You can see the sogginess of the bread which is a good thing. It’s got the right amount of au jus but not too much.  When you’re in Chicago, go to Portillos! The best. Als beef is very good too. Johnnies Beef is amazing too but it’s in Emwood Park which is a neighborhood on the west outskirts of Chicago (too far). Those are 3 local icons...can’t go wrong. But DO go to Portillos. It’s an experience unlike any other.
I’ll second Portillo's. It is definitely an unmatched experience. And get a chocolate cake shake, too!

As for the Italian beef, I do like the sandwich with some au jus on it, I just don’t like the whole thing dunked. Like you said, it makes the whole thing too soggy and a complete mess.  I do like to get a cup on the side and dip it as I go, but definitely some on the sandwich itself too.  And I usually get both the sport peppers and giardinera. Cuz why not?!

Ok so I wasn’t going to explain this but I guess I have to now. See, the very thing that makes it look like a turd is actually what makes it so good! The chopped beef and the American cheese have fused together as one, which is the most important quality in a good cheesesteak. It is only one word, after all.
  • Truth.  Although I want more cheese, onions, and peppers visible.

Isn't this the pizza thread?  Lol.

That shit log steak looks grinding.

So, in other words, much of the digestion necessary for this sandwich has already occurred prior to eating?

I’m an American/without onions guy. Although I have toyed around with the idea of getting long hots.

There’s a really good new show on Netflix called “Ugly Delicious” and the first hour long episode is all about pizza. Don’t watch while hungry. They go all around the world and try a wide variety of pizzas, as well as dive deep into what “authentic” pizza is and if that word should even be used.

Where the heck are all the pizza pictures ?  Just because I gave up pizza for lent doesn't mean you guys have to.

I watched some of the Fried Chicken episode and will watch the rest and the Pizza one soon.
It is a different sort of food porn show, he is more interested in showing beyond making/tasting the food.

Broke some frozen squares out to re-heat for lunch yesterday.  It was not bad.  Seems if you pull it out at just the right time (that's what she said) then you can nail it.

Mmmm, food porn.  I will definitely check out that show.  If it's anything like what Bourdain does, I'll be hooked.

Exactly, I usually find food shows extremely boring, but I was really captivated by this one. The fried chicken episode you mentioned is the perfect example, the way they dig into the racism behind it, lots of stuff I never realized.
