Maybe we should have a rule for this album that you cannot make any negative comments about songs.  These threads won't be pretty.
    Nah.  Those comments are great.

    Alright, here's my best:

B-Side Material: Gonna See My Friend, Supersonic, Force of Nature (Riot Act B-Side quality and not the amazing B-Sides from the early 90's)

I never want to hear ever again:  Unthought Known, Just Breathe

Average:  The Fixer (live is great), Johnny Guitar, Speed of Sound

Great Songs:  The End, Amongst the Waves, Got Some

I'm with you 100% except for Force of Nature.

I understand dislike for The Fixer but it is a great song to get the crowd going at shows as it is upbeat, has a strong singalong chorus, and is short.

songs like just Breathe and Sirens are slow slogs that take forever live.

I look at The Fixer for what it is, a poppy lead single. You're right, it gets the crowd going. I really like the song. It's easily one of my favorites on the record. I think fans, me included, get spoiled by the history of this band and taking the high road in regards to leveling off the success they were headed towards. But these guys are all musicians and want their songs to be liked, even if it appears uncool or whatever. So I give them a pass on songs. At the end of the day it's just a fun pop song to get people moving...and it accomplishes that. And as a lead single, it certainly represents the album as a whole.

    Just Breathe
Amongst and Force of Nature are standouts on a mediocre album.
Tho I will take Backspacer any day of the week over the follow up. Just awful.

You are all depressing. I really enjoy backspacer. It makes me feel happy. Except the end. That one makes me feel sad. Don't know how to vote. While I like all the songs (as stated) none of them grab me as immediate favorites. I'll listen tomorrow again and decide.

I actually really like Backspacer, except for The End. That's one of less than a handful of songs in the entire catalog I don't like. The rest of the album is freakin great, imo, and gets shit on way too much around here.
Yes!  Thank you!  I missed your post when I wrote mine above.

Of course we're depressed! We're Pearl Jam fans! Their biggest hits revolve around teenage death, incest, and abusive relationships! Didn't you see the "Sponsored by Prozac" sign above the forum?

Haha!  That's too funny. Seriously it's been a rough night in my little neck of the woods. I have the impulse to do nothing else tonight than listen to why go, daughter and rvm loud in rotation with a little betterman thrown in and then end the session with black, nothing as it seems and all or none. I'm certain that would cure me immediately.  No Prozac or the fixer or amongst the waves needed

I'm sorry to hear that, man. I'd be lying if I said I were in a better place. I swear I played the Cat Stevens song "Father and Son" for like 45 minutes earlier. Fucking music, man. Knows the words and emotions when I don't and can't.

Those are 2 of the weaker songs for me.  Pretty generic. And Lightning Bolt is the better album!

I think it has turned into a great live "anthem". I also like the studio version.

But it has the "Eddie has a cold" voice that plagues the entire album. It's shows up the most in this song.

And I don't know what i prefer less, the "Eddie has a cold" voice of Backspacer or the "Eddie is hoarse, raspy and struggling" voice of S/T/Avocado. Thank god for the "Eddie just got out of bed" voice of Riot Act.

The weakest song in the studio album catalog, in my opinion. Otherwise, I think this album, although really short, is a good collection of songs.

The Fixer should not be going out first round.

People... c'mon, man. On any other album sure, but geez. Here? Worst song on this album? That's your vote?

Force of Nature will always be my favorite, although I love all of Backspacer, with the exception of Johnny Guitar!

Johnny Guitar has a funny-B-Side vibe to it at least.
I don't even know what The Fixer is.

Some other songs have the odd cheesy line, but The Fixer is pure cheese throughout.

Well said.  Why Backspacer has a special place forever in my heart.  My hero was dying and I couldnt get my head around it.  B/S came out as this was happening and just spoke to me -- The End (the most depressing song on the album and one of the most depressing songs from them, ever) in particular held an important place for me during those last days.

    I will take the blame
    But just the same

I get why others crap on Backspacer, but I love it.  Always.  Saved me from my own hardheartedness and showed me how to feel again.  Made it OK to let any disappointment, anger, hurt, frustration, despair, and loneliness from the previous decade plus out from the corner I shoved it all into and to move on from the eventual loss.
