I tend to think Cincy is right that Pelosi (who is kinda Hilary-Light in terms of being hated, anyway) is opening the door to criticism toward the Democrats for being petty. Unless there is a rule/law, policy, or precedent for not having a State of the Union address during a shutdown, the strategic move would be to let this happen. And I am not totally convinced that the shutdown should be a reason to cancel.

I think she did this because it is plain old inappropriate to do a SOTU address during a government shutdown, and especially during this one, when the POTUS is literally holding America hostage for his own political gain. I don't think Pelosi looks bad at all here. She looks like a reasonable human being who knows what is and isn't appropriate. Trump is spectacularly bad at that.

I'd be interested in other's honest takes on this issue. Cause IMO, while trump has been losing the battles on the shutdown and the wall and looking like a child with his canceling of planes...this is a petty act by Pelosi. My initial take. And it gives trump a, "See how they treat me as president" opportunity. I do not see the value in what Pelosi is doing. Trump put her in a bad spot and won this stupid battle.
I thought that at first because it gave Trump the rare opportunity to take the high road. Then he turns around and makes her get off the airplane runway last week. So he doubled down on her pettiness.
At this point, I am glad that she held her ground. I don't think she had a choice. The problem in her initial canceling letter was citing security concerns. The reasoning should always have been just because the government is shut down. That makes sense to not have a state of the union while he has his own government shut down. The whole thing is pretty childish though.
And to expect the secret service and capitol police to provide the heightend level of security without pay. At least Nancy doesn't want to further rub salt in the wound.

Yeah that's fair. But they will be working anyhow without pay
I honestly don't know what I would do if in her shoes. Maybe the same, though like Juggler mentioned it would have been better to make the reason the shutdown only. But I also still think this gives him a little ammo....and he was all out of it before then. This is really petty all around. My opinion is congress should be in chambers...in session until passing government funding. The president should be in the oval office until he signs something. They should be working round the clock...and since Trump is being a baby, keep sending him bills. The fact that they can just not work (and still get paid) while others are working and not being paid is ridiculous.

Not that I disagree...but why is it inappropriate to give the State of the Union during a shutdown?

For reasons already given by others, and because it is simply "rude" as hell to get up there and do something so traditional and something that is meant to try and "bind" the union as one while the union is in fact right in the depths of chaos and while government employees aren't being paid. But also because, in this particular case, the fact that Trump's holding America hostage gives him a very fucking weird position as the giver of the speech. I mean, Trump getting up and giving a State of the Union address while the actual state of the union is "hostage". It's like a fucking hostage taker getting up in front of the hostages' families and declaring how justified he is in holding them hostage, and in fact it's the families faults that they were taken hostage in the first place. You just KNOW that Trump would use the SOTU address as his own personal pulpit to deflect blame for the current chaos that he created. A SOTU address simply isn't an appropriate venue for this, and there is no way Trump would use it for anything else. It would be like turning the SOTU address into one of his rallies.

The fact that anyone can still come to the conclusion of the idea of "hey, there's blame to go around on both sides" is completely ridiculous to me at this point. Trump continues to get The Dancing Bear treatment, it's amazing.

Nancy, Chuck and Lindsey thought they had a deal. Team Trump Treason listens to his president, Ann Coulter, and VP, Rushbo, and walks away from it. Then Team Trump Treason invites Chuck and Nancy to the Oval Office to negotiate but instead is a petulant man child not interested in policy specifics but bluster and embarrassmnet, who then goes on to say that he'll own the shut down because he's a "tough" guy. Team Trump Treason can't be trusted nor is he willing to compromise. He's not the smartest guy in the room. Fuck him, he owns it, fully.
Remember that the House asked tRump for details on how the $5.7B was going to be spent and the WH sent details for the originally agreed upon amount of $1.6B. That's fucked up. He is a total fuck up in every sense of the word.

I think an important point everyone needs to consider here is that this child of privilege never expected to win the presidency. The worst outcome for him was to win.

Yes, that's true. But I don't understand why it's an important point at this stage of the game.... Do you mean that we all have to keep it in mind so that our expectations stay on the floor? Because I'm having no trouble with that either way.

Then PTeam TrUmp TreasonIN should serve his country honorably by resigning.
The number 3 and 4 repub senate leaders are stating that the senate bill that funds the government that passed in December, with repub support, doesn't have repub support now. Who's holding things up again? They're all ascared of PTeam TrUmp TreasonIN and the white nationalists.

Haha, touche'. I guess my point is at any time we want to pretend we're going to have a conversation about policy, as if it's legitimate, then that thought should just go out the window as quickly as it arrived. It's astonishing to me how many ridiculous things he, and his administration, has done, or attempted to do, and the beat just goes on. While Nancy Pelosi takes a stand on legitimate grounds.....and HOLY SHIT can't we just have balance people??? Dems, Pelosi and Schumer specifically, are held to completely standards than this buffoon and the R's. The "scale of balance" that the two sides are compared against will always be relative, which is a complete joke.

Yeah but no.
Care to elaborate?
NO. Let him hold a RALLY in West Virginia or Kentucky as his 2019 SOTU.
