Thats right on all accounts- if someone is injured it can be bumped up to a felony or on multiple dui's and I think its not a felony in Canada could be wrong but I think it falls under Inadmissible Class which means you can't get in. 10 years is a long time to be punished and I can see how you would not have even guessed that would still come back to haunt you. Personally I think if you are carrying a valid DL can drive in the US you should be allowed in. I can just imagine how incredibly bummed you were- I would have been crying my eyes out.
Oh I have a question too about Canadian law-whats up with the sipper cup lids at concerts and not allowing your drinks in the bathroom?! We never got an answer on that- Toronto 06

I'm not sure about a "Canadian" law re sipper cup lids (not sure what those are mind you), but in terms of bringing drinks into the bathroom, I know at bars you can't (1) for hygenic reasons (I mean why would you want to?), and (2) somebody could either slip something into your drink when you aren't looking or, if you were successful in smuggling in your own booze, then you could be topping up your drink every time you go to the bathroom and hence taking away profits from the bar (or venue) you are patronizing.

I'm pretty sure that's more of a municipal or provincial law - not nationwide.

So instead of bringing your drink into the bathroom, cause the Mounties fear somebody will slip you a Mickey while you drop a deuce, you leave your drink unattended on the bar/table and head into the bathroom and your drink is therefore safe from the likes of Sebastian Janakowski and his endless supply of roofies?

Well you can get in if you apply for rehabilitation with the canadian consulate in NYC they'll make you pay a fee and based on the case by case they will allow you entry back into Canada.
The fee can be $200 to $1000 depending on the offense.

Ah, no, just replying to Trixie's explanantion as to why its a felony in Canada to bring a Labatts Bleu into the restroom with you...the logic of Terrance and Philip being vulnerable to being slipped something while they chug in the stall just seems a tad off to me.

I thought so too.
We paid $200 CAD, though my husband is not considered rehabilitated, the border guard told him that them as border guards can make the decision of letting someone in or not at that point and he was making the decision of letting him in after paying the $200, he took his picture and then gave him like this certificate that was good only for 48 hours, he "kindly" gave us one more day in case we had car trouble or something like that so that he wouldn't get arrested if we were pulled over or something.
He did tell him that is he wanted to visit Canada again then he would have to go through the paperwork with the consulate and pay the fee again

I think the fact that we had flown from Florida also played a role in this guy making the decision of letting us pay to be able to cross rather than turning us around...

There are many stories of Canadians being denied entry to the US for charges (not convictions) from 20 - 30 years ago. One guy was place on the Do Not Enter list because he had a website on which he talked about his one and only experience with LSD in the late 60's (he was a psychiatrist with his own website thingy). This was found out because the US Border Service googled him...so be careful what you put on your myspace or facebook pages.

A newspaper reporter was denied entry to the US becuase when she was 21 (back in 1972 or something) her boyfriend was charged with possession and she was implicated, even though her boyfriend insisted she was innocent and had nothing to do with his pot smoking and had signed and notorized documents on file. She had completely forgotten about that. As a result, she was not able to take her mother on their much planned trip to Maui (leaving from Seattle). As her mother was elderly, this was pretty much her only opportunity to go to Hawaii....

These are only two cases I've heard of, but I am certain things like this happen on a daily basis. so yeah, it goes both ways...

LOL, nah he didn't, we paid to the cashier and the receipt said something along the lines of like Border Control somin' like that and they gave this printed water seal protected - lol - pass into Canada for 48 hours....

Well at this point I laugh, though that day when my husband told me about the DUI being a problem my heart sunk to my feet :(
I'm glad we ended up being able to cross for the show even when in reality tickets and border fee that show cost me $345 -

You really should learn to read my friend. I did not say it was a felony (in fact, I'm not even sure it even is a "law" but rather a practice put into place by bars, concert venues, etc.) to bring a Labatt's Blue (not Bleu by the way) into the restrooom with you. When you wash your hands after peeing (assuming of course that you do this as a practice), and then go to dry your hands, where do you put your drink? Hold it in your teeth? Of course you put it down. Besides which, how tough is it to leave it on the table or bar where your friends are or wait the two minutes it'll take you to finish it?
