It's no cup of tea crossing from Canada into the States either. Your border Gestapo make ours seem like the Care Bears........
So true on my account a few years ago. We entered Canada north of Havre, MT and were treated extremely well. The agents asked their questions, we answered them to their satisfaction, and they wished us a great visit.
Upon returning to the US, further west (much bigger entry station, but I cant remember the closest Montana city for reference) Big Bad Bertha treated us like we had a disease. I had my wife and two kids with me and Bertha asked my children, who were in the back seat of the car : "Who are these people you are riding with?" Now I got some pretty smart kids, so my son answered "Dave and Michelle" (with my last name of course) INSTEAD of "my mom and dad". We even had their birth certificates and our drivers licenses, as we didnt need pass ports at that date. Bertha took her own sweet time deciding we werent abducting little Canucks and then had the balls to ask me if I was importing anything else! Yeah lady, check my pants for that illegal pineapple, fer cryin out loud!

My husband and I did not make two shows this summer: Hartford and Mansfield because he has Chrone's disease and ended up in the hospital that weekend. We lost $300 worth of shows plus our transportation cost. I just accepted it as a lost and am happy that my husband is healthy again. Mike would be able to relate!
The point is I didn;t think something you've "done your time for" that is a misdemeanor in the US is a felony in Canada. My other point is I received no contact from the 10C when I called and emailed about it. That's what pisses me off more than anything.
...because they're smarter than the 10C? I'm glad. The shit you have to go through and the INCONVENIENCE of picking up at will call is enough for me to say....
So, we go to the border Friday to spend the evening before Saturday's show. I had a DWI about 6 years ago, as did my girlfriend. I understand that is not anyone else's problem. But just listen...
They pull us over, rifle through the car, detain us at the border for like 2 hours... and then come out and let us know that we were not allowed into Canada because we both had DWI's in the last 10 years. Neither of us even drink anymore. It created so many problems back then, and that was evidence that it can continue to haunt you.
With that being said, I called the 10C and left a message regarding the loss of the tickets... asked to be able to give a name of someone who could have at least USED the tickets to the show. No call back, no email response, nothing.
It isn;t their fault but, due to their "policies" (which aim to stop scalping, yet scalpers have more than enough TM tickets to scalp), I will not be buying 10C tickets anymore. I won;t renew my membership either. I had no idea that Canada treated DWI like this. I have never been to Canada. I read about what you need to cross the border and what to expect, but it said nothing of DWI. It really shocked me and still does.
So, thanks for reading and, yes, it's my fault I had a DWI, but it's the 10C's fault I ate $180 fucking dollars (instead of at least having someone USE the tickets). I mean, make a concession and give me a tshirt or something from the merch section. The more I think about it, the more it pisses me off. No flexibility, totally rigid regulations, and no common sense or empathy for anyone. Yet we make this whole thing roll (the fans).
Change your policy. You are screwing people left and right, in and out of Canada. Life gets in the way sometimes. There are family emergencies (not in my case, but I've read about some in the past and it's "Oh well, too bad, no refunds, returns, exchanges for ANY REASON!). No one should have to worry about their tickets when other things are important. You would think they'd use a case by case basis for determining refunds by now. I've read 100's of stories on here that seem legit and the only one that ever was rectified was a guy who felt his "seats weren;t good enough". Give me a break. I hope the 10C can continue to operate now that my $180 dollars (half a weeks work) has enabled them to stay open for business.
A DWI in Canada would make you a felon I believe, and thats what they saw you as, trying to enter thier country.

You know, last time the hubby and I went to Seattle, we were given the 3rd degree at the border. We were going to FTM and they wanted to know why Canadians would be supporting a US charity. Did we know people there? Were we going to call them? Have we ever been finger printed? Have we ever been charged with a crime? What is this event you're going to? Crohn's Disease? Is there no Canadian equivalent charity? What do you do for a living? Are you going to work in the US? Shut your vehicle off please. Are you bringing anything into the United States? Did anyone ask you to bring anything into the United States? Have you ever been arrested? Crohn's Disease? Where do you work? How long will you be in the US? Are we meeting anyone in the US? Where do you work? Then the guy went around and tapped on all the panels of our SUV. Had to roll down all the windows. They went through our bags. Can I see your tickets? (which we were picking up at the venue). Crohn's Disease? Where do you work? How long in the US? How often have you been to the US in the past two years? Have a nice day...you can go...
Yikes! I've had to show tickets for the Bridge and for last year's Bumbershoot. However, because I am on medications I could be denied entry because of my medical condition. Things have toughened up quite a bit both ways thanks to the US. yay...

I can't believe they treated you so bad :( (well I actually can because my husband and I were treated really bad at the Canadian border too)..
As I had stated before Canada, the US and any other country can have whatever laws to keep from going in, they can even have no reason and refuse you entry, but what bothers me is that they have to be such assholes about it (on both sides), the people that work at the border (not all of them of course) go on this super power trips because they have the final say inside that little office and they act like total dicks/bitches.
I'm still counting my lucky stars that the guy decided to let us in even though we had to pay $200 to get in, but I still don't know why he had to treat me (with a clean record) and my husband with a DUI when he was 21 (10 years ago) like we were convicted car thieves or something
I wonder how going into Canada works when you are flying in rather than driving, is it the same? If you have a DUI then they turn you around and you have to fly back?

i'm not a drunk, i made a mistake. i should have done more research, i'm from a rural community and i'm not very worldly. what can i say. missing a show sucks, period, when you already have tickets.
p.s. one dwi is not a felony in the US. see, you cared just as much about US laws as I did about Can ah DAH's.
Thats right on all accounts- if someone is injured it can be bumped up to a felony or on multiple dui's and I think its not a felony in Canada could be wrong but I think it falls under Inadmissible Class which means you can't get in. 10 years is a long time to be punished and I can see how you would not have even guessed that would still come back to haunt you. Personally I think if you are carrying a valid DL can drive in the US you should be allowed in. I can just imagine how incredibly bummed you were- I would have been crying my eyes out.
Oh I have a question too about Canadian law-whats up with the sipper cup lids at concerts and not allowing your drinks in the bathroom?! We never got an answer on that- Toronto 06

I'm not sure about a "Canadian" law re sipper cup lids (not sure what those are mind you), but in terms of bringing drinks into the bathroom, I know at bars you can't (1) for hygenic reasons (I mean why would you want to?), and (2) somebody could either slip something into your drink when you aren't looking or, if you were successful in smuggling in your own booze, then you could be topping up your drink every time you go to the bathroom and hence taking away profits from the bar (or venue) you are patronizing.
I'm pretty sure that's more of a municipal or provincial law - not nationwide.

So instead of bringing your drink into the bathroom, cause the Mounties fear somebody will slip you a Mickey while you drop a deuce, you leave your drink unattended on the bar/table and head into the bathroom and your drink is therefore safe from the likes of Sebastian Janakowski and his endless supply of roofies?

Well you can get in if you apply for rehabilitation with the canadian consulate in NYC they'll make you pay a fee and based on the case by case they will allow you entry back into Canada.
The fee can be $200 to $1000 depending on the offense.

Ah, no, just replying to Trixie's explanantion as to why its a felony in Canada to bring a Labatts Bleu into the restroom with you...the logic of Terrance and Philip being vulnerable to being slipped something while they chug in the stall just seems a tad off to me.
I figured that would be the response I got. Sorry, I'm none of those, with an otherwise clean criminal record. I totally understand Terrance and Phillip now. I never thought it was funny, but boy I sure do now. But it's cool, come to the US anytime you want.
I dont think you understand that the guy was making a joke about Canada and was not making an insult towards you whatsoever.

decided to punch his way out of his mother's womb. Shortly thereafter
he grew a beard.
I like how you are rehabilitated once you fork over $200-$1000 bucks.
I thought so too.
We paid $200 CAD, though my husband is not considered rehabilitated, the border guard told him that them as border guards can make the decision of letting someone in or not at that point and he was making the decision of letting him in after paying the $200, he took his picture and then gave him like this certificate that was good only for 48 hours, he "kindly" gave us one more day in case we had car trouble or something like that so that he wouldn't get arrested if we were pulled over or something.
He did tell him that is he wanted to visit Canada again then he would have to go through the paperwork with the consulate and pay the fee again
I think the fact that we had flown from Florida also played a role in this guy making the decision of letting us pay to be able to cross rather than turning us around...

There are many stories of Canadians being denied entry to the US for charges (not convictions) from 20 - 30 years ago. One guy was place on the Do Not Enter list because he had a website on which he talked about his one and only experience with LSD in the late 60's (he was a psychiatrist with his own website thingy). This was found out because the US Border Service googled him...so be careful what you put on your myspace or facebook pages.
A newspaper reporter was denied entry to the US becuase when she was 21 (back in 1972 or something) her boyfriend was charged with possession and she was implicated, even though her boyfriend insisted she was innocent and had nothing to do with his pot smoking and had signed and notorized documents on file. She had completely forgotten about that. As a result, she was not able to take her mother on their much planned trip to Maui (leaving from Seattle). As her mother was elderly, this was pretty much her only opportunity to go to Hawaii....
These are only two cases I've heard of, but I am certain things like this happen on a daily basis. so yeah, it goes both ways...
I thought so too.

You really should learn to read my friend. I did not say it was a felony (in fact, I'm not even sure it even is a "law" but rather a practice put into place by bars, concert venues, etc.) to bring a Labatt's Blue (not Bleu by the way) into the restrooom with you. When you wash your hands after peeing (assuming of course that you do this as a practice), and then go to dry your hands, where do you put your drink? Hold it in your teeth? Of course you put it down. Besides which, how tough is it to leave it on the table or bar where your friends are or wait the two minutes it'll take you to finish it?
