I think it's pretty well proven that whales are highly intelligent and have decision making skills, and social communication abilities, so it is not even a little bit surprising to me that a whale would become involved in a conflict like that. I think whales are basically as intelligent as humans. They just have different skills.

    They are indeed!

And I see no reason why bison could not have been helpful to the Dakota Native Americans. They are known to be highly intelligent.

Thousands of Wild Buffalo Appear Out of Nowhere at Standing Rock (VIDEO)

    Fantastic!

The animals know. Years ago when a Sea Shepherd ship and crew were investigating illegal fishing operations in eastern Russia a Russian naval ship tried to ram the Sea Shepherd ship but was prevented from doing so by a whale that came between the two vessels. The whale was unharmed and the Sea Shepherd crew escaped.

    The animals know.
    They really do. :)
No, they don't. They're ruminants, herd animals, and they're moving around over their range. I really don't think they're watching the news or getting tweets on their phones. The roaming charges alone would be atrocious.
I know this may sound far fetched, but I really truly honest to god (Buddha, Jesus, Mohamed, or "Other Divine Being") believe they do. If you read the account of the whale that saved the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society ship and crew you might believe it too. I'll try to find it and post it.
I am definitely willing to consider that cetaceans would come close enough to investigate. They are intelligent and social animals, and there are other reports of cetaceans socializing with humans and even "rescuing" them. I don't for a minute believe that they know the difference between the SSCS and a Russian ship. Why would they?

And bison? Glorified cows, acting exactly as a herd of ruminants does.

I have enormous respect for pretty much any animal in the natural world, but that respect means recognizing it as purely itself in its niche, and not anthropomorphizing it.
When I was in grade ate biology class I remember my teacher walking in on the first day of school and wrote w/ chalk on the board "Anthropomorphize"
We of course had no clue what that word meant but the teacher said "kids, you all know Mickey Mouse and he is alive in your minds w/ thoughts and feelings"
To this day I had yet to find a reason to use the word until now.
    Thanks Often.

"Rescue" I agree was the wrong word. "Intervene" would have been better.

No, oftenreading, I don't believe anthropomorphizing other animals shows any respect whatsoever. Doing so might even be slighting them. But on the flip side, I personally would find my being zoomorphized by another to be quite a compliment.

I don't think they are known to be highly intelligent, and I am not thinking these buffalo consciously came running in because they knew there was a pipeline that their Native friends are protesting and they needed a boost in morale, lol, but I am not one to argue against the mysteries of the "spiritual" connections that may be possible between humans and animals when humans are willing to open themselves to it. Maybe those animals sensed something, who knows?

It's so openly biased, yet viewers still think they get accurate information. That story was about one native, one person, but because that one person on the side of the station's bias, they'll air it.

Thank goodness for the internet in this day and age. Other than actually being there, it's the only way to get even a basic understanding of what's going on. Main stream media is not going to give a true perspective. That would go against their interests.

    This is a stretch.
An eagle spirit coming to him? Pretty selfish.
The eagle was probably looking for food.
This is too close for comfort to a bird landing on the emporium of Sanders.
    .............
sorry I had to stop typing for a second I saw a bird land outside my window and I thought it was for me.

The bird stayed for an hour, allowed people to get close, and then touch it. Not exactly commonplace.
