Brought him up in the worst possible context basically. It was a mistake, fine... but seriously, aside from the terrible poor taste of the timing, why is Eddie still talking about Bartman like it's a joke? Surely he knows that Bartman's life was very sadly and unfairly ruined by the whole thing. It's not funny.

Some Cubs fans think Bartman was the reason they lost(not true, the team choked) and apparently Ed is one of those, still bitter, fans.
Only a complete idiot actually thinks Bartman was the problem. He was just trying to make a joke. Just like Tig Notaro makes jokes about having cancer. Obviously that's a different level. But I'm just saying I don't think there's anything wrong about trying to make a joke about it.
I think Ed's reference to Bartman is him making fun of Cub fans who scapegoated him, not making fun of Bartman.

Yeah, no. It was just the optics of a fan once again being escorted out of Wrigley. It was a similar scene. The only person Ed meant to make fun of was the guy who got ejected.
Didn't Ed say something to the effect of 'they're booing him like Bartman'? That's a joke on Cub fans overreacting. The joke is the 'they' in the sentence. Booing an aggressive a hole fan is appropriate, booing and harrassing Bartman is not.
I'd have to go back and listen. That's not exactly what I heard.

And I don't think Ed thought the crowd was overreacting the other night, considering he waved a sarcastic bye-bye to the guy he kicked out.
I mean overreacting with Bartman. That's the joke. He's comparing reactions to two situations that have a similar theme.
That's my point. In one case the crowd clearly overreacted. In the other, not at all. Your interpretation doesn't make sense, with all due respect.

Just watched a documentary on Bartman the other night on ESPN. I feel totally bad for this dude! I think majority of the fans at the game that night would have done the same thing. You can't blame one mistake on the loss. I hope this guy has some sort of peace in his life!

At least 6 or 8 other people in his row and the row behind him did do exactly the same thing - reach for the foul ball. He just happened to be the poor soul whose hands the ball glanced off of.

I think we can crack Bartman jokes 14 years later.. If Bartman's life is still a mess because of his fuck up, its on him. I think most people have moved on.. No one got hurt for Christ's sake, just a bunch of millionare's missed the Series.

Obviously you didn't watch the 30 For 30 documentary about it. Dude was/is a lifelong fan surrounded by people that were supposedly on his side. At first people were just screaming at him and throwing beers. By the time the team was finished choking away a game they were in control of the guy was genuinely afraid for his physical safety. Rightly so due to the drunken mob mentality at the event. Then his identity was revealed and he couldn't go to work or even stay in his house without being savagely harassed. That Halloween there were 1000s of people wearing Cubs hats with headphones and glasses. It's not a stretch to say that his life became a living hell to the point where the dude had to go Salmon fucking Rushdie and disappear. I'd say that qualifies as someone getting hurt. For what? Trying to catch a foul ball that every single other person around him reached for as well.

Exactly. And not, it's not cool to crack Bartman jokes. Cubs fans are over it. Any TRUE Cubs fan and fan of the game of baseball, anyway. Bungle, Bartman did not fuck up. He reached for a foul ball, out of play which, as Ace mentioned, everyone around him did as well. If Moises Alou doesn't react like a little bitch after the play, most likely it's just like any play with a routine foul ball in the stands - totally forgotten. But Alou's reaction, and the broadcast media continually panning the camera to him... ruined the guys life. I've been a Cubs fan all my life, just as Steve Bartman was. I can't imagine having that taken away from me because the fellow fans of the thing we all love and came to see failed and blamed it on me.

It boils down to this....Comedy is dead. Nobody can tell a joke anymore because someone will have their feelings hurt.

Mr. Bartman should have gone back to the park when invited. He would have received a standing ovation and he'd be going to all the games now.

    good point, Empty.
they blew up the baseball. Bartman should've gone back to the stadium. and the joke was typical Ed banter.
I can't believe there is a whole thread on this and that it made the MSN top headlines yesterday.
Ed threw out an asshole in Hampton and I barely heard a peep about it outside of the fanviews thread. I guess this is the slow news season.

Nah. It just wasn't funny. Barely comedy at all, and a bad attempt at that, on top of being out-of-date and badly timed, all while being at the expense of a man who has been badly treated. Just because someone attempts a joke it doesn't mean we are obligated to like it. No need to turn this into people being too PC. God knows I'm not, and that "joke" just wasn't good on any level.

I never even heard the "joke". I laugh at the reference. Not at what happened to the man himself, that truly does suck, but the entire story. People going apeshit for a foul ball.

People are too PC today by the way.

Well fine, lol, all I'm saying is that if people think a joke is shitty it doesn't automatically mean that "comedy is dead" and they are too sensitive.

Me too. But I'm not really a baseball fan and I forgot about the joke about 10 seconds after Eddie made it.
    I'm through with screaming
  • He made a bad joke. Not a big deal. Anyone else see the irony here? Fanatical PJ fans being critical about a joke about a fanatical fan situation? My friends and I joked about dressing up like Bartman for the show. I guess I'm going to hell too.
