I have seen reports that it was a shootout with assault rifles when cops showed up. Not that that will help the families but hopefully they werent targeted

That was just a ploy to get the officers there. They were targeted!!!

These events used to happen once or twice a year. They are now happening multiple times a week.

Cops weren't getting shot every other week in the past. When cops get killed, it's always reported.

I don't believe police fatalities are up at all this year, so far.

Gavin Long, Black Male from Kansas City, MO was the shooter, plus he went out shooting on his 29th B-day. Possibly ex Military as well.

Over all, actually down a little but for firearms-related, up 56%

Hardest job in the country and people only want to focus on the tiny percentage of them that are bad. Even the protests here were peaceful and uniting until the outside troublemakers came in. No surprise this guy came from out of state.

Those poor officers. First one just identified. He just became a dad a month ago. RIP Montrell Jackson.

I really is sad and terrible when cops are killed.

And as far as bad people- I think the percentage of all people be they cops, citizens, Americans, Arabs, Europeans, whatever- I think it's a small percentage of all people that are truly bad or awful people.

A small percentage of what? 1,000,000? 1,000,000,000? Doesn't take a math whiz to realize that's still a lot of people that are this hateful and vindictive out there, all around us, in every populace. People need to stop playing so much damn Pokemon and look out for each other. Although I will concede, that stupid game is getting people out there and growing communities...strange times we live in!

Yeah, that will happen when several of them all get gunned down at once. You need to look at the number of separate incidents to really see if the rate has increased, not the number of officers were killed in a lump sump/percentage. Either way incidents have gone up, but not that dramatically. And what do we expect, given how things are in the States right now?

What do you mean? Seems like a strange, random comment in the context of what I said.

Interesting, Texas leads the way in officer fatalities with 14. The next closest state has 7, and then no states have more than 3. I thought MORE guns and open carry made everything and everyone safer?

    1996: 9/29 Randall's Island 2,  10/1 Buffalo                  2000: 8/27 Saratoga Springs
    2003: 4/29 Albany,  5/2 Buffalo,  7/9 MSG 2                   2006: 5/12 Albany,  6/3 East Rutherford 2
    2008: 6/27 Hartford                 2009: 10/27 Philadelphia 1              2010: 5/15 Hartford,   5/21 MSG 2
    2013: 10/15 Worcester 1,  10/25 Hartford                       2014: 10/1 Cincinnati
    2016: 5/2 MSG 2,   8/5 Fenway 1,  11/7 Temple of the Dog MSG
    2018: 9/2 Fenway 1
    2020: 3/30 MSG             2022: 9/11 MSG            2023: 9/10 Noblesville

Texas also has the second highest population in the USA. It also doesn't say how many of the 14 were firearms related.

Fair enough, I was just pointing out that everyone carrying a gun on their hip is supposed to make everybody safer, from all violence, not just from gun violence. Also, Louisiana is 2nd on the list with 7 cop fatalities, although they were the 25th most populated state in 2015. So I'm not sure if population is the culprit. Seems more the lax gun culture.
