Proof please to your claim on what pays for the GI Bill. Because back when I was in the money I had to pay to get it funded the program. It may have changed since they increased it after I got out, but this is not correct on how it was back then.

I'm not reading that book. I understand how things work. Bernie couldn't get any of what he wants through congress. If you made him king maybe, president no. So in our world he is just trump of the democrats. Hot air and that is all.

Taxes paid for GI bill. Did you have a side job while in the military and used that monkey to pay a separate fund that fully funded the GI bill? No.

I don't think Bernie and Trump are at all the same. Trump obfuscates, and panders to the lowest common denominator. I believe Bernie is sincere. But I agree that nothing he's talking about has a prayer of succeeding. His own party won't rally around him (just watch the superdelegates flock to Clinton), and as president he'd have two opposition parties to deal with.

I agree, but do however disagree with his politics. Met the man back when I lived in VT and he was the mayor of Burlington. He was a nice guy. Interviewed him for my school newspaper.

So when I see Bernie and Hillary wanting to pay for all this extra stuff I say fuck that. They will push me down to raise others up. I say hell no. They can fund their communist plans in another country.

Say yes to the American dream again.

    Communist?

    http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/do-you-know-the-difference-between-a-communist-and-a-socialist-a6708086.html

Capitalism — or really the concept of “liberalism” — arose in the 17th century, and centers on the right to private property. In Adam Smith's foundational “Wealth of Nations,” Quill notes, “is recognition that capitalism is going to make the lives of a good majority of the population miserable, and that there will be a need for government intervention in society and the economy to offset the worse effects.”

Socialism was in part a response to capitalism, largely through the writings of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. Socialism focuses on the inequalities that arise within capitalism through a number of possible responses. Quill outlined some possibilities: “[T]he state might 'wither away' or collapse altogether, in others it would regulate the production of goods and services, in yet others it would become thoroughly democratic” — all with the aim of reducing that inequality.

You can see that's where democratic socialism arises. That philosophy, Quill writes, seeks “democratic control of sectors of society and economy in order to avoid the pitfalls of an unregulated market and — this is most important — the kind of terrible authoritarian government that emerged in the Soviet Union.”

Communism “was the endpoint of Marx's ideas,” Quill writes, though Marx didn't delineate what it would look like, exactly. “We find hints in works like 'The German Ideology” (1846) where there is a description of working life that is unalienated, i.e. creative and various — we hunt in the morning, fish in the afternoon, and become opera critics in the evening.“ During the Cold War, though, the idea came to be inextricably and pejoratively associated with the Soviet Union and with the elimination of private property. The term, in Quill's words, ”served as a shorthand for all things un-American“ — which was the way that Trump used it.

I grew up in a socialist country, then I lived in a social democracy, now I live in a mainly capitalist society. I am no expert by any means, but I experienced all of these to a certain extend and can somehow see the differences. While I understand that you cannot compare America with a smaller European county 1:1, I am always baffled when people are so much against even the slightest concepts that democratic socialism encompasses.

Why should I pay for all this extra stuff Bernie and Hillary want to do? I am a self made man. I went into the Marine Corps at 19. I earned my GI Bill and used that to better myself in my late 20's when I went back to school. I took a bus for 6 hours to get from school to work, slept a few hours and repeated that process the next day. I worked hard to get where I am at. Anyone could have done what I did. No one gave me anything. So when I see Bernie and Hillary wanting to pay for all this extra stuff I say fuck that. They will push me down to raise others up. I say hell no. They can fund their communist plans in another country.

Say yes to the American dream again. Say yes to Rubio in 2016! He may be a robot but at least he gets it. Or his people do, either way Rubio in 2016!

The tax increases that Sanders is proposing would have no effect on you whatsoever.

Funny how you took from the government when it suited you yet you criticize those who might need assistance.

So from what I understand you all think Obama is taking from the government? I had a government job. Same as him. And the postal worker you get your mail from. And those EPA workers, cops, fireman and so on. We are just suckling from the government teets. Very nice.

Ani,IMO your sweat equity, testicular fortitude ,enlisting, serving and putting your life on the line so others may have and enjoy the freedom to voice their opinions on these matters should be suitable payment in return for your education.

We as a country should use military service as a trade off for "free" education. The problem is many on here want to just give, give, give(oh and take from the rich) without the sacrifice or effort of either service or hard work.

I completely agree with your take here. And as F,me stated Thank You.

I made no assumption about anyone's race and I never said NO ONE should be super rich. I wish I were super rich. If I were, just for starters, I would do would be to buy Sea Shepherd Conservation Society a new ship, have some wildlife bridges build over freeways, pay for an ailing friend's shoulder repair so he could continue touring with his band, and do volunteer work so I would live longer rather than work myself to death. Super rich me? You bet!

I seem to recall some reforms were made under Clinton in conjunction WITH a tax hike and we magically fouund ourselves in a BUDGET SURPLUS, which , correct me if I am wrong, we were spending well within our means? And not really borrowing money to fund shit? That the surplus was or could be used to PAY DOWN the deficit?

Then Bush came along with the help of a Republican House and Dem Senate. Did away with that surplus , cut those taxes, started TWO unfunded wars, added a medicare drug plan that didnt allow for negotiation on pricing which was also unfunded.

Obama worked to get the deficit spending reduced and now with this latest budget deal last year the reduction was eliminated? Spending INCREASED . By guess who, a Republican led House AND Senate. Granted The President signed that into law, but WTF is really going on?

Just WHO is it you think is acting in OUR collective best interest?

Again....neither Sanders nor Clinton are proposing any tax increases on anyone making less than $400K/year

Both are pro increasing the minimum wage (which would most likely benefit the OP), pro worker, pro voter.

wealthy folks (or not so wealthy folks) who do great work in helping make lives (both human & animal) & this planet better off are real heroes. it would be a hoot to throw around endless crates of funds helping make it all better somehow. we could start by ending trades with countries that hunt whales & dolphins. we could as a decent people hang elephant & rhino poachers/murderers. i wonder what bernie's stance is on endangered species & the like? op is a marine. if we were wealthy we could hire him & his pals to hunt elephant/rhino hunters. on the show 'rhino wars' i was soo wanting those navy seals & the green beret guy to really fuck things up... yeah ok, beat & kill idiots

At least you have to work to earn the GI Bill

Born to privilege also has its benefits. From my perspective, the Republican base seeks to preserve these inherent privileges and keep a thumb on the socially oppressed.
I would be shocked to learn if a significant percentage of those who qualify for the GI Bill were 'born to privilege'
Could be wrong though, I do not have any stats on the socioeconomic status of GI Bill applicants.
This wasn't what I was implying at all. In fact, most of the military are far from privileged.

I was saying that typically speaking, the people complaining about other people sucking the system dry have never had to deal with much that might make them dependent upon said systems: you know... born with the silver spoon in their mouth.

    Right on, Chadwick!

The one thing I wish Bernie would do would be to talk more about how he wants to help stop our decimation of ocean ecosystems and cetaceans (love me some whales and dolphins!), spare those big beautiful elephants, and slow global warming.

I try to do what I can but was kind of kidding about becoming super rich. The odds of that happening to me are about the same as being struck by lightening (which would actually be really cool as long as it didn't kill me!) But I am glad there are a handful of super rich people doing good for there fellow humans and creatures!

Now I know this has little to do with taxes but I was out in my work room this afternoon working and listening to a Neil Young CD and thinking about all these interesting threads here lately and thinking about what we said here about animals and nature and then this song (below) came on and I'm standing there in the middle of the room and tears are streaming down my face and I'm feeling like a complete idiot and alright all at the same time.
