I'm a little conflicted about the materialistic nature RSD has become. camping out for a record? this is what we do now?
They've been doing it for a few years now. People fucking camp out for Black Friday for gods sake. Gotta get that cheap tv and a bucket of cheese balls while they're at it. It's nothing new. 'Merica.

I know people have been doing it for black friday and shit. I find that stuff incredibly sickening. I just had this idea that RSD was different. but i guess not.
if they really wanted to promote independent record/music stores, these titles would randomly distributed to the stores sporadically all year long. that way you wouldn't have this bullshit rush of a big sales day, followed by 6 months of poverty. you'd have people popping in once a week, and probably buying some stuff while there even if they don't find what they were hoping for.

Totally agree. Every year I curse the shit afterwards and swear I'll never do it again.

Other than trying to score this mystery vinyl, I'm out this year. I've had enough. It's such a hassle and I always end up buying shit I normally wouldn't because the stuff I really want is unavailable.

Not much different than camping out for concert tix, at least for those who want the records so that they can play them. If you're talking about the flippers, yeah... but don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

In the beginning it was more about supporting indie stores and labels. Now it's all about reissuing crap by major labels that could be found in many dollar bins. The rest of the "limited" hype junk is made for flippers to buy and sell to dummies who can't wait a few months when a lot of it, not all, will be selling for the same or lower cost as if they camped out and bought it on RSD.
The other by-product is that it gluts the pressing plants with pointless reissues and knocks all the indie labels to the bottom of the job list. It's all a big sham. But for those who actually still have fun and are buying for themselves, have a great day.

I do consider it different. concert is paying for an experience. record is paying for a physical product. one could argue that listening to a record is in fact and experience, etc, but that's just my take.

I absolutely think that listening to an album is an experience - that was my point.

I've never fully taken in the RSD experience. I am conflicted because the only place close to me that is participating is 60+ miles away. I really don't need anything but I don't like the idea of making the drive there only to come up empty handed. Also, if there is even a chance people are camping out at the store I can forget about it.
I think the real underlying tone was always money, it's just that RSD is now established and that hidden force is now at the forefront. It may have been to help the independent stores but $$$ has always been driving the bus.

I have never even been to the record store on RSD, lol. I fully support the day. But I don't like crowded stores and waiting in line enough to actually do it myself. Plus RSD is pretty shitty in Canada anyway. We hardly get anything in most stores. If it were the States I'd be more likely to give it a shot if there was something I really wanted.

I made a list of how many records there are for 2 scenarios. For the ones I don't want I assumed the higher amount (and a lower amount for the ones I do want). Here's the list.
It shows I have a 32% of getting something I want (using an average scenario), but only 27% under the worst case (i.e.only 5 bennys available, and 100 backspacers).
Title Want Avg Worst case Ten original yes 3.5 2 Benny yes 7.5 5 Lost Dogs yes 7.5 5 BS white yes 7.5 5 Yield yes 7.5 5 Riot Act yes 7.5 5 RVMR yes 7.5 5 Ten Coke yes 27.5 25 PJ20 colour yes 35 30 Avocado yes 45 40 LO10L yes 60 55 LB Red yes 90 80

Where will the vinyl sale be taking place? Under " featured items"... "Vinyl" or something else...? The few seconds of searching for the proper icon may be the difference between getting a package or not!

Great question......I don't think we will be getting an answer.
